Chapter 3: The Signature That Was Never His
For several seconds, Marcus couldn't move.
His mother.
The woman who had spent forty-three years beside Robert.
The woman who had cried when Robert sold his favorite car to pay for Marcus's college tuition.
The woman who had stood beside him at every family celebration.
She had attempted to transfer his father's house.
“Daniel,” Marcus whispered, “are you certain?””
“I'm looking at the filing right now.””
“Can you send it to me?””
“Already have. But listen carefully. The transfer hasn't been completed. The county clerk flagged the paperwork because there is a discrepancy in the notarization.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“What discrepancy?””
“The notary listed on the document has denied witnessing your father's signature.””
A cold sensation spread through Marcus's arms.
“Who signed it?””
“The paperwork says Robert Williams.””
“But you just said the notary denied witnessing it.””
“Exactly.””
Marcus looked toward the bedroom.
Vanessa was still standing there.
Behind her, Evelyn had appeared.
Neither woman looked surprised.
That frightened him more than anything.
“Daniel, don't discuss this with anyone else yet,” Marcus said.
“I'll come to your office.””
“Bring your father. And Marcus?””
“Yes?””
“Tell him not to confront anyone or sign anything. This could become a serious legal matter.””
Marcus ended the call.
He turned toward his wife.
“Vanessa, did you know Mom tried to transfer Dad's house?””
Her face changed.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
She looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“Marcus, your attorney is mistaken.””
“Then why was the transfer attempted?””
“Your father agreed to it.””
Robert appeared behind Marcus.
“No, I didn't.””
Evelyn turned sharply.
“Robert, please. Don't start.””
“Don't start?”” Robert repeated.
“You have tried to give away the house I worked my entire life to pay for!””
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
“I have lived in that house for forty-three years too.””
“And you think that gives you the right to steal it?””
Vanessa stepped between them.
“Stop shouting! This is exactly why nobody feels comfortable around you!””
Robert looked at her.
For the first time, he didn't argue.
He simply stared at her with exhausted disbelief.
Marcus moved toward his father.
“Dad, let's go downstairs.””
Robert nodded.
As they walked away, Vanessa called after him.
“Marcus! If you walk out of that room with him, don't expect me to forgive you!””
Marcus stopped.
He turned around.
“Vanessa, my father is seventy years old. Someone has accused him of a crime he says he didn't commit. Someone has prepared fraudulent-looking legal documents. And someone has tried to transfer his house.””
His voice hardened.
“I am not leaving him alone.””
He continued downstairs.
Robert sat on the sofa, his shoulders bent.
Marcus brought him a glass of water.
For a moment, the two men simply sat together.
Then Robert spoke.
“Your mother wasn't always like this.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Tell me what you mean.””
Robert stared at the photograph on the mantelpiece.
It showed the four of them at Marcus's wedding. Robert stood beside Evelyn, smiling proudly. Vanessa was holding a bouquet of white roses.
“That picture was taken five years ago,” Robert said.
“Your mother used to laugh every morning. She would complain about my terrible cooking. She would call me three times when I went to the grocery store because she forgot what she wanted.””
He swallowed.
“I don't recognize the woman upstairs.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Dad, has something happened recently?””
Robert hesitated.
Then he nodded.
“About four months ago, Evelyn started asking me about my retirement accounts.””
“What did she ask?””
“She wanted to know how much money I had saved. Whether the house was fully paid off. Whether you would inherit everything if something happened to me.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I thought she was planning for the future. I didn't want to create trouble between you and your mother.””
Robert reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I kept this because I didn't understand it.””
Marcus unfolded it.
It was a handwritten list.
Several bank account numbers were written across the page, followed by estimated balances. There were also notes about Robert's pension, the house, and an insurance policy.
At the bottom, someone had written:
*Once Robert is declared incapable, everything becomes easier.*
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
“Who wrote this?””
Robert shook his head.
“I found it in the study two weeks ago.””
“Why didn't you show me?””
“I thought it was something your mother was discussing with an attorney. I didn't want to accuse her without proof.””
Marcus looked at the handwriting.
It wasn't his father's.
He recognized Evelyn's handwriting immediately.
He had seen it on birthday cards, grocery lists, and countless notes throughout his childhood.
“Dad,” Marcus whispered, “this is Mom's handwriting.””
Robert nodded.
“I know.””
Upstairs, a door slammed.
Then Vanessa's voice echoed through the house.
“EVELYN, WE NEED TO TALK!””
Marcus looked toward the ceiling.
“Stay here,” he told his father.
He walked upstairs quietly.
The bedroom door was slightly open.
He stopped outside.
Vanessa was speaking in a low, furious voice.
“I told you he wasn't supposed to find that document!””
Evelyn answered.
“You were supposed to handle Robert. Not turn the whole house into a courtroom!””
“I did handle him! But Marcus started asking questions!””
“You should have thought about that before you started screaming.””
Vanessa let out a frustrated breath.
“Don't blame me. You said the money would be transferred before the end of the month.””
Marcus felt his heartbeat quicken.
“What money?”” he whispered.
Evelyn lowered her voice further.
“The account has enough to cover everything. We just need the property documents signed.””
“And what happens if Robert refuses?””
A pause.
Then Evelyn said something that made Marcus grip the doorframe.
“That's why we needed him declared mentally incompetent.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“And the accusation?””
“It was supposed to make him look unstable. An elderly man accused of assaulting his daughter-in-law. His reputation would be destroyed before he could defend himself.””
Marcus felt sick.
Vanessa spoke again.
“What if he tells the police?””
Evelyn answered without hesitation.
“Then we make sure nobody believes him.””
Marcus stepped backward.
His shoe brushed against a loose floorboard.
The women stopped talking.
“Who's there?”” Vanessa demanded.
Marcus pushed the door open.
Both women turned.
Evelyn's face went pale.
Vanessa immediately grabbed a tissue and began wiping her cheeks.
“Baby…”
Marcus looked at her.
“Don't.””
She froze.
“I heard everything.””
Evelyn stood up.
“You were listening to a private conversation?””
“You were planning to have my father declared mentally incompetent.””
“That's not what you think.””
“Then explain it.””
Evelyn took a step toward him.
“Marcus, you're misunderstanding the situation. Your father has money, property, and responsibilities he can no longer manage.””
“He manages his own finances perfectly well.””
“He forgets things!””
“So do I sometimes. Should I hand over my house?””
Evelyn's jaw tightened.
Vanessa walked toward him.
“Baby, please. Your mother was only trying to protect us.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Us?””
She nodded.
“We're a family.””
He gave a short, humorless laugh.
“You accused my father of assault. You tried to get control of his money. You helped create documents using his signature. And now you're telling me this was for our family?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“You're being cruel.””
“No. I'm finally listening.””
Evelyn suddenly changed her tone.
“Marcus, think carefully. Your father is old. He won't be around forever.
You have a wife. You need to think about your future.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Did you just tell me to think about my inheritance?””
Evelyn looked away.
That was answer enough.
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
“Did you know about the attempted property transfer?””
She remained silent.
“Vanessa, answer me.””
“I was only helping your mother.””
“Did you know?””
“Yes.””
The single word landed like a hammer.
Marcus took a step backward.
“Then the accusation against my father was planned?””
Vanessa started shaking her head.
“No, that's not what happened.””
“Tell me the truth.””
She looked at Evelyn.
Her mother-in-law gave her a warning glance.
But Marcus had already seen enough.
He pulled out his phone.
“I am calling Daniel back. Then I'm calling the police.””
Vanessa lunged toward him.
“Don't!””
Marcus stepped away.
“Stay back.””
“You can't do this to me!””
“You did this to yourself.””
She suddenly dropped onto the bed and began screaming.
“HELP! HE'S THREATENING ME!””
Marcus stared at her.
The same performance.
The same raised voice.
The same desperate attempt to make him look like the aggressor.
But this time, he didn't argue.
He simply pressed the call button.
“Hello, Daniel? I need you to preserve every document relating to my father's property. And I need you to contact the authorities.””
Evelyn rushed toward him.
“Marcus, put that phone down!””
He turned away.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from Daniel.
It contained a photograph of the original property transfer application.
Marcus opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
The attempted transfer had been filed under a special authorization.
The signature belonged to Evelyn.
The witness signature belonged to Vanessa.
But the third name, listed as the person who had supposedly arranged the entire transaction, made Marcus stop breathing.
*Robert Williams.*
Underneath his father's name was a handwritten note:
Applicant has agreed to cooperate voluntarily. Family members have been informed.
Marcus looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Evelyn said nothing.
Vanessa had stopped crying.
And then Marcus noticed something else.
The filing date was not October 29.
It was October 28.
The day before Robert had supposedly signed the power-of-attorney document.
Marcus enlarged the photograph.
At the bottom of the application was a telephone number.
He recognized the last four digits immediately.
They belonged to his own phone.
Someone had used his identity to authorize the transfer.
Before he could speak, another message arrived from Daniel.
*Marcus, I found the person who witnessed the original document. It's not a stranger. It's someone who lives in your house.*
Marcus slowly raised his eyes toward his mother.
Evelyn was already reaching for the bedroom door.
May you like
And Vanessa whispered four words that made his blood run cold.
“Your father knows nothing about it.””
