Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Marcus climbed the stairs slowly.
He had heard Vanessa's shout.
So had Robert.
So had Evelyn.
Yet when Marcus entered the bedroom, his wife was sitting on the edge of the bed, quietly wiping her eyes.
“What did you just say?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa looked up.
“Nothing.””
“I heard you calling Mom.””
“I was asking her to bring me some water.””
“No. You said she promised to take care of something.””
Vanessa glanced at Evelyn.
Her mother-in-law immediately stepped forward.
“Marcus, your wife is upset. Stop turning every word into an accusation.””
Marcus folded his arms.
“Then explain why the security camera was disconnected before Dad supposedly attacked her.””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“What camera?””
“The one in the hallway.””
She shook her head.
“I don't know anything about that.””
“Really?””
“Yes!””
Marcus took out his phone.
“The recording stopped at 10:47. The incident supposedly happened at 11:15.””
Vanessa started crying again.
“Are you saying I planned this? Are you saying I would deliberately accuse an innocent old man?””
Nobody answered.
She stood up and walked toward the window.
“Fine. I understand now. Your father is more important to you than I am.””
“Vanessa, stop making this about loyalty.””
“Then what is it about?””
“The truth.””
She laughed bitterly.
“The truth? You want the truth? Your father has been watching me for months.
He makes comments about my clothes. He enters rooms without knocking. I've been uncomfortable in this house for a long time!””
Robert, who had followed Marcus upstairs, stopped at the doorway.
“That is completely untrue.””
Vanessa pointed at him.
“Don't come near me!””
Marcus turned toward his father.
“Dad, stay outside for a minute.””
Robert reluctantly stepped back.
Vanessa watched him leave.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Marcus, I need to tell you something.””
“What?””
“Your father has been trying to turn you against me.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Why would he do that?””
“Because he knows we're planning to sell this house.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Sell the house?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He doesn't want us moving away. He knows that once we leave, he'll lose control of everything.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Who told you we were selling the house?””
“You did.””
“When?””
“Last month.””
Marcus shook his head.
“We discussed renovating the kitchen. We never discussed selling the property.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
Evelyn quickly interrupted.
“That's enough. We can discuss property matters later. Right now, Vanessa needs medical attention.””
Marcus looked at his mother.
“Why?””
“She is traumatized!””
“Then we'll take her to the hospital.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No hospital.””
“Why not?””
“I don't want strangers examining me.””
“Then we'll call someone to document your injuries.””
“No!””
Her answer came too quickly.
Marcus studied her face.
“Vanessa, if someone hurt you, documenting your injuries protects you.””
She folded her arms.
“I said no.””
Evelyn walked toward Marcus.
“Your wife has made herself clear. Stop pressuring her.””
He stared at his mother.
Something about the entire situation was beginning to feel wrong.
He had spent years believing Evelyn was the most reasonable person in the family. She had been married to Robert for forty-three years. She knew his habits, his temper, his weaknesses.
If anyone could explain what had happened, it should have been her.
But she wasn't asking questions.
She wasn't trying to establish the truth.
She was determined to make sure Vanessa's accusation remained unquestioned.
“Mom,” Marcus said, “did you know Vanessa wanted to speak privately with Dad this morning?””
Evelyn looked away.
“No.””
“Did you know she asked him to come upstairs?””
“No.””
Robert's voice came from the hallway.
“That's not true.””
Everyone turned.
The old man was standing near the door, holding a small envelope.
“Evelyn, you were standing in the kitchen when Vanessa asked me to help her with the insurance papers.””
Evelyn's jaw tightened.
“I don't remember that.””
“You were making coffee.””
“I said I don't remember!””
Marcus looked between them.
Then he noticed the envelope in his father's hand.
“What's that?””
Robert held it out.
“Something I found on the dining table before all this happened.””
Marcus opened it.
Inside were three printed pages.
The first contained a property valuation.
The second was a photocopy of Robert's retirement account statement.
The third was a document with Robert's signature at the bottom.
Marcus read the heading.
*Power of Attorney.*
His eyebrows pulled together.
“Dad, what is this?””
Robert shook his head.
“I've never signed that.””
Vanessa's face turned white.
Evelyn moved toward Marcus.
“Give me that.””
He stepped backward.
“Why?””
“Because it's private family paperwork.””
Marcus looked at the signature again.
It resembled his father's handwriting.
But something was wrong.
The date beside the signature was October 29.
Robert had been in the hospital that day for a routine heart examination.
Marcus remembered because he had taken him there himself.
“Dad,” he said, “you weren't home on October 29.””
“No. I was at the hospital.””
Marcus examined the document more carefully.
The paper gave someone authority over Robert's financial accounts, property transactions, and certain legal decisions.
The named representative was Vanessa Williams.
Marcus slowly raised his eyes.
“Why does my wife have power of attorney over my father?””
Vanessa began crying.
“He wanted me to help him!””
Robert shook his head.
“That's a lie.””
“He asked me!””
“I never asked you to do anything!””
Vanessa turned toward Marcus.
“Your father is getting older. He forgets things. I was only trying to protect him.””
Marcus looked at the document.
“Then why is his signature dated on a day he was in the hospital?””
Evelyn snatched the pages from his hands.
“Enough! This is exactly why Robert should not be making financial decisions anymore.””
Robert stared at his wife.
“Evelyn…”
She refused to look at him.
Marcus felt a chill move through his chest.
“Mom, what are you saying?””
Evelyn finally met his eyes.
“I'm saying your father has been confused for months. Someone needs to take responsibility before he loses everything.””
Robert's hands began shaking.
“After forty-three years, you're going to stand there and call me incompetent?””
Evelyn's expression remained cold.
“I'm trying to protect this family.””
“No,” Robert whispered.
“You're trying to protect something else.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed Marcus's arm.
“Baby, please. We need to leave.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I can't stay in this house with him.””
Marcus gently pulled away.
“I need to understand what that document is.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“You're choosing him again.””
Marcus didn't answer.
He walked into the hallway and called his family's attorney, Daniel Brooks.
Daniel had handled Robert's estate planning for nearly twenty years. If anyone could determine whether the document was legitimate, it was him.
“Daniel, I need you to check something immediately.””
“What happened, Marcus?””
“Someone has prepared a power-of-attorney document using my father's signature. It names my wife as his representative.””
There was silence.
Then Daniel asked a question that made Marcus's stomach tighten.
“Marcus, did your father sign anything recently transferring control of his property?””
“No. That's why I'm calling.””
“Good. Don't let anyone submit that document anywhere. And don't let your father sign anything else.””
“Why?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Because I received a call three days ago from someone claiming to represent your father. They wanted me to release the original property deed.””
Marcus looked toward the bedroom.
“Who called you?””
“I didn't recognize the voice. But the person knew details about your father's estate that only someone inside your household should know.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Did they give you a name?””
“Yes.””
Daniel paused.
Then he said it.
“Vanessa Williams.””
Marcus felt the floor shift beneath his feet.
He turned toward the bedroom.
His wife was standing in the doorway.
She had stopped crying.
And she was staring directly at him.
“Who are you talking to?”” she asked.
Marcus slowly lowered his phone.
Before he could answer, Daniel spoke again.
“Marcus, there's something else. I checked the public property records this morning. Someone has already attempted to transfer ownership of your father's house.””
Marcus's mouth went dry.
“Who attempted it?””
May you like
Daniel hesitated.
“Your mother.””
