Chapter 1: The Video That Changed Everything

The moment my twelve-year-old son knocked a glass of orange juice out of my hand, my wife slapped him in front of three hundred guests.

But what frightened me wasn't the slap.

It was the fact that, when I finally watched the video on his phone, I realized my son had just saved my life.

“Dad, please. Watch it before she takes my phone!””

Ethan's voice trembled as he held the device toward me.

Vanessa stood several feet away, her fingers gripping her silver clutch so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

“Marcus, don't be ridiculous,” she said.

“He's a child. Whatever he thinks he recorded, it doesn't mean anything.””

I ignored her.

The video began with a shaky view of the kitchen entrance at Whitmore Estate. A catering employee walked past carrying a tray. Then the camera shifted toward the refreshment counter.

Vanessa appeared.

She glanced over her shoulder, reached into her silver clutch, and removed a small glass bottle.

My stomach tightened.

She looked around again before opening it.

Then she poured several drops into a glass of orange juice.

My glass.

I recognized the little gold marker beside it. The caterers had placed one there because Vanessa had personally requested that my drink be kept separate from everyone else's.

The video continued.

Vanessa stirred the liquid with a cocktail spoon, wiped the rim with a white napkin, and placed the glass on a silver tray.

Then she whispered something.

The camera picked up her voice.

“By tonight, everything will finally be mine.””

My fingers went numb.

I paused the video.

“Ethan,” I said quietly, “when did you record this?””

“This morning. Around eleven.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“He was spying on me! Do you understand how inappropriate that is?””

I turned toward her.

“What was in that bottle?””

She laughed, but it sounded forced.

“Vitamins. I have supplements in my purse. You know that.””

“Then why did you hide them?””

“I wasn't hiding anything!””

Ethan shook his head.

“Dad, that's not all.””

He swiped the screen.

A second video appeared.

This time, the camera showed Vanessa standing beside the kitchen island, speaking to a man wearing a black suit.

I recognized him.

Richard Cole.

My wife's older brother.

Richard had been living in my guesthouse for almost six months after claiming his construction business had collapsed. I had offered him temporary accommodation, paid some of his bills, and even arranged an interview with one of my business partners.

He was the last person I expected to see involved in something like this.

On the recording, Richard leaned closer to Vanessa.

“Are you sure about tonight?”” he asked.

Vanessa nodded.

“It's already arranged. Marcus trusts me. He won't suspect anything.””

“And the paperwork?””

“After the birthday party. Once he's unable to interfere, you can handle the rest.””

Richard glanced toward the hallway.

“What if the boy notices?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Ethan believes whatever he wants. Nobody takes a twelve-year-old seriously.””

The video ended.

For several seconds, I couldn't hear the music, the conversations, or the guests whispering around us.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

“Marcus?”” Daniel Brooks, my business partner, approached cautiously.

“Are you all right?””

I handed him the phone.

“Watch this.””

Daniel watched the first recording, then the second.

His expression changed.

“Jesus Christ.””

Vanessa immediately reached for my arm.

“Marcus, listen to me. This is being taken completely out of context.””

I stepped away.

“Don't touch me.””

Her eyes widened.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

She glanced around at the guests.

“Can we please discuss this privately? You're embarrassing me.””

I looked at the broken glass scattered across the marble floor.

“You slapped my son in front of three hundred people. I think we're past worrying about embarrassment.””

Her face reddened.

“He attacked you!””

“He knocked a glass out of my hand.””

“Because he's been manipulated!””

Ethan moved closer to me.

“I wasn't manipulated, Dad.””

His voice was small now.

He touched his cheek, where a red mark was beginning to form.

“I heard them talking last night. I didn't understand everything, but I heard Uncle Richard say something about your company and your insurance.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Stop lying!””

Ethan flinched.

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Don't you dare speak to him like that.””

Daniel returned my phone.

“Marcus, we need to call the police. And don't let anyone touch that glass.””

I nodded.

“Get security. Nobody leaves the estate until the police arrive.””

Vanessa stared at me.

“You can't be serious.””

“I've never been more serious in my life.””

She lowered her voice.

“Marcus, think about what you're doing. We are married. You can't destroy our family over a child's imagination.””

I looked at her.

“Then explain the videos.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

At that moment, a waiter approached with a nervous expression.

“Mr. Hale?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

He looked at Vanessa before speaking.

“I'm sorry, sir. But there's something else you should know.””

Vanessa's face changed.

The waiter swallowed.

“Your wife asked me to prepare two separate drinks this afternoon. One for you and one for your son.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

The waiter hesitated.

“Because she said your son had been having trouble sleeping and needed something to calm him down.””

Ethan grabbed my hand.

“Dad, I didn't drink it.””

The waiter nodded.

“The second glass is still in the kitchen.””

Daniel immediately called security.

Vanessa took a step backward.

And then the waiter added something that made the entire room go silent.

“Sir, your wife told me that both glasses had to be served before the birthday toast.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was no longer pretending to be offended.

May you like

She was calculating.

And I suddenly understood that the drink wasn't the only thing she had prepared for that evening.
