Chapter 9: The Trap Inside My Own Company

Richard Cole was arrested at 4:20 p.m.

The police found two passports, three phones, and a photograph of Ethan inside his carry-on bag.

But the most disturbing discovery was a printed document containing our home address, Ethan's school schedule, and the names of the people authorized to collect him.

One name appeared at the top.

Andrew Hale.

The second name was mine.

Someone had forged my signature to authorize Richard to collect Ethan from school.

Detective Lawson showed me the document at the station.

“Do you recognize this?””

I stared at the signature.

“That's supposed to be mine.””

“Was it?””

“No.””

He nodded.

“We're investigating how the document was submitted.””

I looked at him.

“Was Richard planning to take Ethan?””

“We believe he was. We don't yet know where he intended to take him.””

“Who paid him?””

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

I leaned forward.

“Andrew?””

Lawson didn't answer.

Instead, he placed another file on the table.

“This came from Richard's second phone.””

The screen displayed a message conversation.

Richard:

*The boy is ready.*

Unknown number:

*Wait until the father signs the transfer.*

Richard:

*And if he refuses?*

Unknown number:

*Then use the backup plan.*

I stared at the final message.

“What transfer?””

Lawson opened the attachment.

It was a corporate ownership agreement.

My company.

Hale Development.

The document transferred controlling interest to a holding company registered overseas.

The beneficiary was a company called Northbridge Holdings.

I recognized the name.

It was one of the investors that had approached us six months earlier.

At the time, I had rejected their proposal because the terms were unreasonable.

“Who owns Northbridge?”” I asked.

Lawson turned the page.

The name printed beneath the company details made my blood run cold.

Andrew Hale.

My brother had created a company to acquire my business.

And he had been using Vanessa's access to gather the documents needed to complete the transfer.

But something didn't make sense.

“Why would he need me to sign?””

“Because your signature is required to transfer controlling ownership,” Lawson explained.

“The documents we've recovered appear to have been prepared using forged authorizations.””

I stared at the paperwork.

“Then why did Richard mention the boy?””

Lawson looked at me.

“We suspect the plan involved using Ethan's inheritance as leverage. If you refused to cooperate, they could threaten to expose his paternity, challenge the trust, or use him to pressure you.””

I felt sick.

“How long has this been going on?””

“Possibly several years.””

I leaned back.

For years, I had believed my family was safe.

Meanwhile, the people closest to me had been preparing to take everything.

My company.

My son's inheritance.

My marriage.

And perhaps even my life.

“Detective, I want Andrew arrested.””

“We're working on that.””

“Then work faster.””

Lawson closed the folder.

“There's something else. Richard agreed to cooperate.””

I looked up.

“What did he tell you?””

“He says Andrew wasn't the person who originally arranged the plan.””

“Then who was?””

Lawson paused.

“Your father.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Richard claimed that years earlier, my father had entered into a private financial agreement with Laura's family. When Laura inherited the estate, the agreement gave my father certain rights over the assets.

After my father died, Andrew believed those rights should pass to him.

“He claims your father was aware of the relationship between Laura and Daniel,” Lawson continued.

“He also says your father knew the identity of Ethan's biological father.””

I shook my head.

“My father was dead before Ethan was born.””

“Exactly. That's why we're examining the documents.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Then why would Richard blame him?””

“Because Richard says your father made a promise to Andrew that was never fulfilled.””

“What promise?””

Lawson opened another file.

A photograph showed an old contract.

The heading read:

*Family Asset Protection Agreement.*

My father's signature appeared at the bottom.

Andrew's was beside it.

Laura's name appeared on the final page.

I read the highlighted paragraph.

If Laura died before Ethan reached adulthood, certain financial rights would transfer to a designated family representative.

The designated representative was Andrew.

I felt my stomach turn.

“But the second trust prevented that.””

“Correct. Laura's lawyers created it to override the earlier agreement.””

I looked at Lawson.

“Then Andrew has no legal claim.””

“Not unless he can prove the trust was invalid.””

“And that's why he wanted Ethan?””

Lawson nodded.

“Possibly.””

I left the station just after six.

Daniel was waiting outside.

“How's Ethan?””

“Safe with Sarah.””

“Good.””

I studied him.

“Daniel, I need you to tell me something.””

He nodded.

“What?””

“Did Laura ever say anything about my father?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She said your father helped her establish the trust.””

“Did she say he knew about Andrew's plan?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Not directly.””

“Daniel.””

He sighed.

“She once told me your father had been afraid Andrew would do something terrible. She said he had made a mistake years earlier and was trying to fix it.””

I stared at him.

“What mistake?””

“I don't know.””

We drove to my office.

I needed to examine the company records myself.

The building was almost empty when we arrived.

Most employees had gone home.

I entered my office and opened the secure cabinet where we kept the original corporate agreements.

The folder containing the ownership documents was missing.

I checked the digital records.

Someone had accessed the company server at 3:12 a.m.

The login belonged to my executive assistant, Olivia Grant.

I frowned.

Olivia had worked for me for eight years.

She knew every password, every appointment, and every major transaction.

I called her.

No answer.

I tried again.

Still nothing.

Daniel stood beside me.

“Maybe she's with her family.””

“Then why was her account used at three in the morning?””

I opened the security footage.

The video showed a person entering my office shortly after midnight.

They wore a dark jacket and a baseball cap.

They walked directly to my desk.

Then they opened the cabinet.

I paused the footage.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Can you zoom in?””

I enlarged the image.

The person's face was partially visible.

It wasn't Olivia.

It was someone I recognized.

Someone who had attended my birthday party.

Someone who had stood beside me while Ethan was being questioned.

I felt my stomach drop.

“That's impossible.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Who is it?””

I swallowed.

“Michael Grant.””

Michael was Olivia's husband.

He also happened to be the chief financial officer of Hale Development.

The man responsible for approving every major company transaction.

I called Detective Lawson.

“There's someone else involved.””

“Who?””

“Michael Grant. My CFO.””

Lawson's voice became serious.

“Don't confront him. We'll send officers.””

But before the police could arrive, the office lights suddenly went out.

The entire floor went dark.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Marcus?””

I reached for my phone.

A door slammed somewhere down the hallway.

Then I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Coming toward my office.

Daniel whispered, “Get behind the desk.””

I crouched.

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

A voice spoke from the darkness.

“Mr. Hale?””

It was Michael.

“I'm sorry about all this.””

I stood slowly.

“What do you want?””

The door opened.

Michael entered holding a thick envelope.

“I need you to sign something.””

I stared at him.

“Are you working with Andrew?””

He shook his head.

“Andrew is just the middleman.””

My blood ran cold.

“Then who is behind everything?””

Michael placed the envelope on my desk.

“You need to understand something, Marcus. Your father didn't build this company alone. And Laura didn't inherit her money by accident.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What is that?””

“The original ownership agreement.””

I opened it.

The first page contained my father's signature.

The second contained Laura's.

The third contained a name I had never seen before.

A name that made Michael smile.

“Your father promised that person control of Hale Development if anything happened to Laura.””

I stared at the document.

“Who?””

Michael pointed to the signature.

*Daniel Brooks.*

I turned toward my friend.

Daniel had gone completely pale.

“Marcus,” he whispered.

“I can explain.””

Michael laughed.

“Ask him about the night your father died.””

My entire body went cold.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then he said five words that changed everything.

“Your father didn't die naturally.””

And before I could ask another question, the police sirens began outside.

Michael stepped backward.

“I'm afraid we're out of time.””

He threw a small device onto my desk.

A countdown appeared on its screen.

<badge color="danger">00:59</badge>

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Marcus, get out!””

I stared at the device.

Then at the man I had trusted for twelve years.

And finally, at the document bearing my father's signature.

The truth was no longer just about who had tried to poison me.

It was about how many people had been involved in destroying my family—and how far they were willing to go to keep their secret buried.
