Chapter 5: The Man Standing Outside My House
I called Daniel immediately.
“Get Ethan out of your house. Take him somewhere secure.””
Daniel didn't ask questions.
“What's happened?””
“Andrew is looking for him.””
There was a brief silence.
“Your brother?””
“Yes.””
“Marcus, I'm locking the doors.””
“Don't stay there. Get Ethan into the car and call the police.””
Lawson was already speaking into his radio.
Two officers were dispatched to Daniel's address while another unit headed toward my house.
Rebecca sat frozen at the kitchen table.
“Is he really going after the boy?”” I asked.
She nodded.
“Richard told me Andrew was desperate. He believed Ethan's inheritance was the only thing that could save him from financial ruin.””
I stared at her.
“How could my brother do this to his own nephew?””
Rebecca's voice cracked.
“Because he stopped seeing Ethan as family a long time ago.””
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
“Are you out?””
“Almost. But there's a black SUV parked across the street.””
“Do you recognize it?””
“No. But it wasn't there ten minutes ago.””
I heard Ethan's voice in the background.
“Dad?””
“I'm here, buddy.””
“Is Uncle Andrew coming?””
I closed my eyes.
“Stay with Daniel. The police are on their way.””
Then I heard a car door slam.
Daniel's voice became sharp.
“Marcus, someone is coming up the driveway.””
“Lock the doors!””
A few seconds later, I heard pounding.
Three hard knocks.
Then Andrew's voice.
“Daniel! Open the door!””
My brother sounded angry.
“Marcus told you to stay away from the boy!”” Daniel shouted.
Andrew laughed.
“Don't be stupid. I'm his uncle!””
Ethan said something I couldn't understand.
Then Andrew spoke again.
“Ethan, sweetheart, come outside. Your father is confused, and I need to explain something.””
I nearly crushed the phone in my hand.
“Don't let him near Ethan!””
Lawson signaled to his officers.
Two police vehicles were already approaching Daniel's street.
“Mr. Hale,” Lawson said, “we need you to remain here.””
But I was barely listening.
On the phone, Daniel shouted.
“Get away from the door!””
Then came a loud crash.
I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.
“Daniel!””
The line went silent.
My heart hammered.
“Daniel!””
A few seconds later, the call reconnected.
“I'm okay,” Daniel said breathlessly.
“The police are here.””
I exhaled.
“Where's Ethan?””
“Upstairs. Safe.””
I heard shouting.
Then Andrew's voice.
“You have no idea what you're doing! This is a family matter!””
A police officer ordered him to step away from the entrance.
Andrew continued shouting.
“Marcus is making a terrible mistake. He's letting a twelve-year-old destroy everything!””
Lawson looked at me.
“Your brother has been detained for questioning.””
I nodded.
But I knew this wasn't over.
When we reached Daniel's house, Andrew was standing beside a police vehicle.
His expensive gray suit was wrinkled. His tie hung loose around his neck.
The moment he saw me, he smiled.
“Marcus. Finally.””
I walked toward him.
“What did you do?””
He shook his head.
“You've been listening to lies.””
“Did you forge my signature?””
“Which signature?””
“The trust documents. The insurance policy. The loan application.””
Andrew's smile disappeared.
“Those are complicated financial matters.””
“Answer me!””
He glanced at the officers.
“Not here.””
I stepped closer.
“Did you help Vanessa get close to me?””
His jaw tightened.
“Vanessa was good for you.””
“Did you know about Laura's medication?””
He looked away.
That was enough.
I felt my fists tighten.
“You let me believe my wife died naturally.””
Andrew's expression hardened.
“Laura was sick, Marcus. We all knew that.””
“Did you help them?””
He lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what Laura was doing behind your back.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Andrew looked toward the house.
“Ask your son what his mother told him.””
I frowned.
“Ethan was nine when Laura died.””
“Exactly.””
“What are you talking about?””
Andrew leaned closer.
“Laura wasn't the innocent woman you remember. She was preparing to take your company apart. She had plans to move assets, change ownership, and leave you with nothing.””
I stared at him.
“That's impossible.””
“Then why did she create a second trust without telling you?””
I had no answer.
Andrew smiled faintly.
“See? You don't know everything about your perfect first marriage.””
An officer stepped between us.
“That's enough. We're taking you in.””
Andrew didn't resist.
But as they led him toward the vehicle, he turned back.
“One more thing, Marcus.””
I said nothing.
“Check your father's old office. The original agreement is still there.””
Then he got into the car.
I stood motionless.
Daniel came outside.
“Are you okay?””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I need to find that agreement.””
We returned to my house with police supervision.
The estate was quiet. The birthday decorations had been removed, and the catering staff had already cleared away the broken glass.
Everything looked painfully normal.
My father's old office was at the end of the second-floor hallway.
I hadn't entered it in years.
After he died, I had kept most of his belongings untouched. His leather chair still sat behind the desk. His old fountain pen rested beside a stack of business books.
I opened the desk drawers.
Nothing.
Then I remembered something.
My father had always hidden important documents behind the bottom panel of his bookshelf.
I pulled out the old books and pressed against the wood.
A small compartment clicked open.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
My father's handwriting was across the front.
*For Marcus. Only open if Andrew betrays the family.*
My breath caught.
I opened it.
The first page was a legal agreement dated twenty years earlier.
It named my father, Andrew, and me.
But the second page contained something I had never seen before.
A clause stating that Andrew would receive a substantial ownership stake in Hale Development only if he remained financially independent and never attempted to interfere with the inheritance of Laura's future children.
Below it was another handwritten note.
Andrew has already asked me to change this agreement. I refused. He believes he deserves everything because he is my eldest son. I fear that one day he will try to take it.
I read the note twice.
Then I found another document.
It was a letter from my father to Laura.
I know what Andrew has been doing. I've arranged a separate trust for Ethan. Do not tell Marcus until you are certain Andrew cannot reach it.
My hands shook.
Why had my father hidden this from me?
And why had Laura kept it secret?
I turned to the final page.
It contained a bank reference number and the name of the trustee.
*Harrison Vale.*
I recognized the name immediately.
Harrison was my father's longtime attorney.
He had retired shortly after Laura's death.
I called his office.
A receptionist answered.
“Vale and Associates. How may I help you?””
“This is Marcus Hale. I need to speak with Harrison urgently.””
“I'm sorry, Mr. Hale. Mr. Vale is no longer practicing.””
“Then give me his personal number.””
She hesitated.
“I can pass along a message.””
“Tell him I found my father's agreement. Tell him Andrew is involved, and Laura's death is being investigated.””
There was a long pause.
Then she spoke quietly.
“Mr. Hale, I think you should know something.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What?””
“Mr. Vale called our office yesterday. He said that if you ever contacted us about the second trust, we were to give you a sealed letter.””
My heart began racing.
“Where is it?””
“In our safe.””
“Can I collect it?””
Another pause.
“Yes. But there's one condition.””
“What condition?””
“He specifically asked that you come alone.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then at the document in my hand.
“Why?””
May you like
The receptionist lowered her voice.
“Because he believes your brother has someone inside your household.””
