Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Laura's Death

I didn't sleep that night.

Ethan fell asleep in my arms in the back of Daniel's car while we waited outside the police station. Every few minutes, he stirred and reached for my hand.

I kept holding it.

At 2:17 a.m., Detective Lawson called.

“Mr. Hale, we need you to come back to the station.””

“Did you identify the substance?””

“Not conclusively. The laboratory is still working on it. But we found something else in your wife's belongings.””

“What?””

“A second phone.””

I sat upright.

“Was it locked?””

“Yes. Our technical team managed to access part of its contents.””

“What's on it?””

There was a pause.

“Messages between Vanessa and Richard Cole. Some of them refer to your first wife.””

I looked at Ethan sleeping beside me.

“What kind of messages?””

“It's better if you see them here.””

By 2:45, I was back in the interrogation building.

Daniel had taken Ethan to his house, where his wife agreed to stay with him until morning.

Detective Lawson led me into a small room.

A laptop sat on the table.

“Before we begin,” he said, “I want you to understand that these are unverified messages recovered from a device. We still need to establish the full context.””

He opened a conversation.

The first message was from Richard.

*Did you find the old hospital file?*

Vanessa replied:

*Yes. It's in the blue folder. Marcus never looked at it.*

Richard:

*Does he know about the medication?*

Vanessa:

*No. And he never will.*

My stomach tightened.

I read the exchange again.

“What medication?””

Lawson scrolled down.

Richard:

*Laura was supposed to recover. That's what the doctor told us.*

Vanessa:

*The doctor told Marcus what he needed to hear.*

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Wait. What does she mean?””

Lawson continued scrolling.

Richard:

*You promised me this would never come back on us.*

Vanessa:

*It won't. The hospital closed the case. There was no investigation.*

I stood abruptly.

“What's this about?””

“Please sit down, Mr. Hale.””

“That's my first wife's name!””

“I understand.””

“No, you don't. Laura died in a hospital. She had cancer. What does Vanessa have to do with her medication?””

Lawson looked at me carefully.

“Did Vanessa have access to Laura's medical care?””

I stared at him.

Then a memory surfaced.

Three years earlier, during Laura's final weeks, I had been working almost around the clock to keep my company afloat.

I remembered Vanessa, who had been introduced to me through a mutual friend, visiting the hospital.

She had offered to help.

She brought groceries, handled paperwork, and sometimes stayed with Laura when I had to attend meetings.

After Laura died, Vanessa had helped organize the funeral.

I had thanked her.

I had trusted her.

And months later, I married her.

“Vanessa told me she was helping because she cared about Ethan,” I said.

Lawson nodded slowly.

“Did she ever administer medication?””

“I don't know. Laura was receiving treatment. The nurses handled most of it.””

“Did Vanessa ever tell you about a medication error?””

“No.””

Lawson closed the laptop.

“There's another message.””

He opened an attachment.

It was a photograph of a medical document.

At the top was Laura's name.

Below it were several lines of handwritten notes.

One sentence had been highlighted.

Patient experienced an unexpected reaction following administration of an additional sedative.

I stared at it.

“What does that mean?””

“It means we need to obtain the original hospital records and speak with the medical staff who were involved.””

I shook my head.

“Laura was already very sick. The doctors told me her condition deteriorated suddenly.””

“That's what the official record currently says.””

“Then why are you looking at this?””

“Because Vanessa and Richard discussed hiding a medical file. And because the recovered messages suggest they may have known more than they disclosed.””

I sat down again.

My hands were trembling.

For three years, I had carried the memory of Laura's final night like a stone inside my chest.

I remembered sitting beside her hospital bed.

Her fingers had been cold.

She had looked at me with tired eyes and asked me to take care of Ethan.

I had promised.

Then she had whispered something I could barely hear.

“Don't let anyone make him forget me.””

At the time, I thought she was frightened of dying.

Now I wondered whether she had been frightened of something else.

“Detective,” I said, “I want every record you can get.””

“We'll pursue the proper channels.””

“And I want to know why Vanessa married me.””

Lawson looked down at his notes.

“That may be the most important question of all.””

At 7:30 a.m., I returned to Daniel's house.

Ethan was sitting at the kitchen table, eating pancakes.

He looked up as soon as I entered.

“Dad!””

He ran toward me.

I hugged him.

“Hey, buddy.””

“Did the police find out what was in the drink?””

“They're still testing it.””

He looked down.

“Are you going to send Vanessa away?””

I crouched beside him.

“She's not coming near you right now.””

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

He nodded, but his eyes remained worried.

Then he reached into his backpack.

“There's something else I didn't show you.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

The paper was yellowed, with Laura's handwriting across the front.

*For Marcus, if I can't tell him myself.*

I stopped breathing.

“Where did you find this?””

“In Mom's old music box. I found it when I went looking for her necklace.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a folded letter and a tiny flash drive.

The letter began with a sentence that made my knees feel weak.

Marcus, if you're reading this, something has happened, and I need you to know that I was never afraid of dying. I was afraid of leaving Ethan alone with people who wanted something from us.

I read the sentence again.

Then the next.

There is something about Vanessa and Richard that you must understand. They came into our lives long before you knew them.

I looked at Ethan.

“Did you read this?””

He shook his head.

“No. I thought you should read it first.””

I kissed his forehead.

“You did the right thing.””

Daniel brought his laptop over.

We inserted the flash drive.

A single video file appeared.

The date on it was six days before Laura died.

I pressed play.

Laura appeared on the screen.

She looked thinner than I remembered, her face pale against the hospital pillow. But her eyes were alert.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus, if you're watching this, then I wasn't able to tell you the truth in person.””

My chest tightened.

She took a breath.

“I know you trust Vanessa. I know she's been helping you. But please, don't let her become Ethan's guardian without understanding who she really is.””

Daniel leaned forward.

Laura continued.

“Richard isn't just Vanessa's brother. He was involved in the accident that destroyed my father's company. And the reason Vanessa came into our lives wasn't kindness.””

I froze.

Laura's voice dropped.

“She knows about the inheritance. She knows about the trust fund I created for Ethan. And she knows that if something happens to me, Marcus will become the only person standing between her and that money.””

The video flickered.

Laura looked toward the door.

Then she whispered something that made my blood turn to ice.

“Marcus, I found out that someone has been changing my medication. I don't know who did it yet. But I saw Vanessa talking to the nurse, and afterward, I found a bottle hidden in her handbag.””

She paused, fighting back tears.

“If I die, please don't believe it was simply the cancer.””

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Daniel whispered, “Marcus…”

I couldn't answer.

My phone rang.

Detective Lawson.

I answered immediately.

“Mr. Hale,” he said, his voice unusually tense.

“We obtained preliminary information from the hospital. There's a problem with the medical records.””

“What problem?””

“The nurse who signed off on Laura's final medication administration has been identified.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who?””

Lawson took a breath.

“Her name is Rebecca Shaw. She was married to Richard Cole at the time.””

I stared at Laura's frozen image on the laptop.

Then Lawson added:

“And according to the records we just received, Rebecca resigned from the hospital three days after Laura died. She disappeared shortly afterward.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Do you know where she is?””

“We have an address. But there's something else.””

“What?””

“Rebecca contacted our department twenty minutes ago. She says she has been waiting three years to tell someone what happened to Laura.””

I looked at Ethan.

He was staring at the laptop, tears running silently down his cheeks.

Then Detective Lawson spoke again.

“She says Vanessa wasn't the only person involved.””

A chill moved through my body.

“Who else?””

There was a long silence.

May you like

Then Lawson said a name I never expected to hear.

“Your brother, Marcus. Rebecca says your own brother helped them plan everything.””
