Chapter 4: The Brother Who Betrayed Me
“Your brother helped them plan everything.””
Detective Lawson's words echoed in my head long after the call ended.
My brother.
Andrew Hale.
The same man who had stood beside me at our father's funeral. The same man who had helped me build Hale Development from a two-person construction office into a multimillion-dollar company. The same man who had held my shoulder when Laura died and promised that I would never have to face anything alone.
I lowered my phone.
Daniel was staring at me.
“Marcus, what did Lawson say?””
I swallowed.
“He says Andrew was involved.””
Daniel leaned back.
“That's impossible.””
“I know.””
But even as I said it, memories began falling into place.
Andrew had introduced me to Vanessa.
He had insisted she was different from the women I had dated after Laura's death. He had encouraged me to give her a chance, telling me Ethan needed a mother figure and I needed someone to come home to.
When Vanessa and I got married, Andrew had been my best man.
He had even given a toast.
To my brother, who deserves another chance at happiness.
I felt sick.
“Dad?””
Ethan stood near the kitchen doorway.
“Are you talking about Uncle Andrew?””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
Ethan hesitated.
“Because I saw him at our house last week. He was arguing with Vanessa.””
My heart skipped.
“What kind of argument?””
“I don't know. I was upstairs, but I heard him say something about the money not being transferred yet.””
Daniel stood.
“Did you hear anything else?””
Ethan nodded.
“He said, ‘Marcus still doesn't know about the original agreement.’”
I looked at Daniel.
“What agreement?””
Neither of us had an answer.
At 9:15 a.m., Detective Lawson arrived at Daniel's house.
He carried a thick folder and asked to speak with me privately.
“Rebecca Shaw has agreed to meet us,” he said.
“She's currently staying with a relative outside the city.””
“Can we see her today?””
“Yes. But before that, there's something you need to understand.””
He opened the folder.
“Three years ago, your brother Andrew was experiencing serious financial problems. His investment company had accumulated significant debt.””
I frowned.
“Andrew told me his investments were doing well.””
“According to the financial records we've reviewed, he was close to bankruptcy.””
Lawson placed several printed transactions on the table.
“During that period, he received multiple payments from an account connected to Richard Cole.””
I studied the dates.
The first payment had been made six months before Laura died.
The second came two weeks before her final hospitalization.
The third arrived just four days after her funeral.
“How much?”” I asked.
“Approximately $640,000.””
I stared at the number.
“Why would Richard give my brother that much money?””
“We believe the payments were connected to an agreement involving your family's assets.””
“What assets?””
“Your company, your late wife's estate, and a trust established for your son.””
My chair scraped against the floor as I stood.
“Ethan's trust is untouchable. Laura established it before she died.””
“That's what the documents indicate. However, someone attempted to change its administrative control shortly after her death.””
“Who?””
Lawson turned another page.
“Your brother.””
I shook my head.
“No. I was the administrator.””
“Initially, yes. But there's a document bearing your signature authorizing Andrew to manage certain matters on your behalf.””
I stared at it.
The signature looked authentic.
But I had never seen the document.
Daniel leaned over my shoulder.
“Marcus, that's not right. You were in London when that was supposedly signed.””
“I know.””
Lawson nodded.
“We suspect forgery. We're investigating.””
I rubbed my face.
“Why would Andrew do this?””
“That's what Rebecca may be able to explain.””
An hour later, we arrived at a small house on the outskirts of town.
A woman in her late forties opened the door.
Her hair was streaked with gray. Her hands trembled as she recognized me.
“Mr. Hale?””
“Yes.””
She looked at Detective Lawson.
“You brought him.””
“I did.””
Rebecca stepped aside.
“I've waited three years for this conversation.””
Inside, the house smelled of coffee and old books.
Rebecca sat across from me, twisting a tissue between her fingers.
“I was Richard's wife,” she began.
“For seven years.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“He told me Vanessa was helping your family. He said you were wealthy, but careless. He said your wife was protecting money that rightfully belonged to people like him.””
“People like him?””
Rebecca gave a bitter laugh.
“Richard believed he deserved everything your family had.””
She took a breath.
“Andrew approached him first. He knew about Laura's inheritance and the trust fund. He told Richard that if Laura died, you would eventually remarry. And if you married someone they could influence, they could gain access to the money.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“Andrew planned my marriage?””
Rebecca looked down.
“Not exactly. Vanessa did. Andrew introduced you because she wanted to get close enough to make you trust her.””
I remembered Andrew introducing Vanessa at a charity dinner.
The way she had laughed at my jokes.
The way she had known about Laura's favorite restaurant.
I had thought those things were coincidences.
They weren't.
Rebecca continued.
“Laura discovered the plan. She confronted Vanessa. Then she started asking questions about the medication she was receiving.””
“Did Vanessa change her medication?””
Rebecca began crying.
“I didn't see her do it. But I saw her give Richard a small bottle. He told me it was nothing dangerous. He said Laura was already dying.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“What happened that night?””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“I was working the night shift. Laura's medication schedule was changed without proper authorization. I questioned it. Andrew called the hospital and claimed you had approved the adjustment.””
“That was a lie.””
“I know.””
“Did you give her the medication?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“I was told it was an approved sedative. I trusted the paperwork. Laura's condition deteriorated afterward. When I realized something was wrong, I checked the medication records.””
She wiped her eyes.
“Someone had altered them.””
“Who?””
“Andrew had called me that evening. He told me to follow the new instructions. He said you were aware of everything.””
I felt something inside me break.
“Did Laura know?””
Rebecca nodded.
“She told me she suspected someone was trying to harm her. She asked me to preserve the records.””
“Then why didn't you come forward?””
Rebecca's expression crumpled.
“Because Richard threatened me. He told me that if I spoke, he would make sure I lost my nursing license and went to prison. He also told me he had people watching my family.””
She reached into a drawer and removed a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew someday someone would need it.””
Inside were photocopies of hospital records, medication logs, and a handwritten note.
The note was signed by Laura.
Rebecca, if anything happens to me, please tell Marcus that Andrew knows about the second trust. He must never let them have Ethan's inheritance.
I looked up.
“The second trust?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Laura told me she had moved part of her inheritance into a separate account. She said only Ethan could access it when he turned twenty-five.””
“How much money?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“More than the first trust.””
“How much?””
She whispered:
“Nearly thirty million dollars.””
My mouth went dry.
Before I could ask another question, Lawson's phone rang.
He answered, listened, then looked directly at me.
“Mr. Hale, your brother just arrived at your house.””
“Why?””
Lawson lowered his phone.
“He's asking where Ethan is.””
Then Rebecca grabbed my wrist.
Her face had turned completely white.
“Don't let him near that boy.””
“Why?””
May you like
She looked toward the window.
“Because Andrew told Richard that if the first plan failed, Ethan was the next way to get control of the money.””
