Chapter 6: The Letter My Father Never Sent
I arrived at Harrison Vale's office shortly after noon.
The building stood in the financial district, tucked between two glass towers. It was an old establishment with dark wooden doors, brass nameplates, and a reception desk that looked as though it hadn't changed in thirty years.
Daniel had insisted on coming with me.
I refused.
“If Harrison wanted me alone, there's probably a reason.””
Daniel frowned.
“Or someone wants you isolated.””
“I'll have police nearby.””
“Marcus, Andrew just showed up at my house. Vanessa tried to poison you. I'm not letting you walk into another trap without backup.””
I considered his words.
Then I called Detective Lawson.
He agreed to arrange plainclothes officers outside the building.
At 12:35, I entered Harrison's office.
The receptionist recognized me immediately.
“Mr. Hale. He's expecting you.””
She led me into a small conference room.
An elderly man stood beside the window.
Harrison Vale.
His hair had turned almost completely white, but his posture remained straight.
“Marcus,” he said.
I shook his hand.
“It's been a long time.””
“Far too long.””
He gestured toward a chair.
“Please sit.””
I placed my father's agreement on the table.
“I found this in his old office.””
Harrison studied it.
Then he removed his glasses.
“Your father was a very careful man.””
“He knew Andrew would betray us?””
“He suspected your brother was capable of it.””
“Then why didn't he tell me?””
Harrison sighed.
“Because he believed you would always protect Andrew, no matter what he did.””
I looked away.
That sounded exactly like my father.
“He also believed Laura was in danger,” Harrison continued.
My attention snapped back.
“Did he know about the medication?””
“No. But he knew Richard Cole had been asking questions about Laura's inheritance.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard believed Laura had access to a substantial family estate. He wanted to obtain control of it through marriage, business agreements, or any other means necessary.””
I leaned forward.
“Then Vanessa was part of the plan from the beginning.””
Harrison nodded.
“Your father discovered that Richard had been communicating with Andrew. He confronted Andrew, but your brother denied everything.””
“What happened next?””
“Your father arranged the second trust.””
He opened a drawer and removed a thick legal folder.
“Laura and your father worked together to protect Ethan's inheritance. The trust was structured so that neither you, Andrew, nor any future spouse could withdraw the funds.””
“Then why did Vanessa keep talking about transferring money?””
“Because she couldn't access the trust directly. She needed to gain control over the company and convince you to change the trusteeship.””
I looked at the documents.
“Who controls it now?””
“An independent fiduciary board. I am one of the trustees.””
I blinked.
“You?””
“Your father asked me to protect it.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Harrison's expression softened.
“Because Laura asked me not to reveal everything unless she died under suspicious circumstances or someone attempted to interfere with Ethan's inheritance.””
I felt a chill.
“So she knew?””
“She suspected something. She came to me several times during the final months of her life.””
He opened another folder.
Inside was a series of handwritten letters.
Laura's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
“Can I read these?””
“Of course.””
The first letter was dated two months before her death.
Harrison, I think Richard has been watching the house. Vanessa has started asking questions about Marcus's finances. She says she wants to help, but I don't trust her.
The second letter was more alarming.
Andrew visited today. He told Marcus that Vanessa would make a wonderful wife someday. I asked him why he was so interested in our marriage. He became angry.
The final letter was dated three days before Laura entered the hospital.
If I don't survive this illness, please make sure Ethan receives everything his grandfather intended for him. I fear someone has already started changing things.
I lowered the paper.
“Did Laura ever mention my brother directly?””
Harrison nodded.
“She told me Andrew had approached her with an offer.””
“What offer?””
“He wanted her to sign away certain inheritance rights in exchange for financial protection. She refused.””
I clenched my jaw.
“And after she refused?””
Harrison looked at me.
“She told me Vanessa began appearing at the hospital more frequently.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything was connected.
The introductions.
The marriage.
The insurance policy.
The forged signatures.
The mysterious medication.
Then Harrison placed a small black envelope in front of me.
“This is the letter your father left for you.””
I opened it carefully.
The first line made my throat tighten.
Marcus, if this letter has reached you, then I failed to protect you from the one person I should have watched most carefully.
I kept reading.
Andrew has always believed that being born first made him more deserving of everything. I tried to teach him that family is not about ownership. I fear I failed.
The next paragraph was underlined.
There is one thing you must understand about Laura. She did not simply inherit money. She inherited evidence.
I stopped.
Evidence?
I looked at Harrison.
“What does this mean?””
He folded his hands.
“Your father never explained it to me completely.””
I continued reading.
Years ago, Laura's father uncovered financial misconduct involving several powerful businessmen. He preserved documents that could expose them. Some of those men later became investors in our company.
My stomach tightened.
Laura kept copies because she feared those men would eventually come looking for them.
I looked up.
“Who were these businessmen?””
Harrison hesitated.
“One of them was Richard Cole's former business partner.””
“And the others?””
“Your father believed at least two were connected to Andrew's investment company.””
I felt a headache building.
“So this was never just about money.””
“No,” Harrison said quietly.
“It may have been about keeping certain people from being exposed.””
I looked back at the letter.
The final paragraph was short.
Marcus, if Andrew is involved, do not assume he acted alone. Someone else in our family has known the truth from the beginning. Someone who has always been close enough to hear every private conversation.
I stopped breathing.
“Who?””
Harrison shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Before I could ask anything else, his receptionist rushed into the room.
“Mr. Vale!””
Harrison stood.
“What is it?””
She held up a phone.
“There's someone downstairs asking for Mr. Hale.””
I turned toward her.
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“Your wife.””
My blood ran cold.
“Vanessa?””
The receptionist nodded.
“She says she's here to collect a document that belongs to her.””
Harrison's expression changed.
“What document?””
“She wouldn't say. But she told security that you had promised to give it to her.””
I looked at the envelope in my hand.
Then Harrison opened the safe and removed a small black folder.
He examined the label.
His face went pale.
“Marcus,” he whispered.
“What?””
He turned the folder toward me.
Written across the front, in Laura's handwriting, were five words:
*The truth about Ethan's birth.*
I stared at it.
“What does that mean?””
Harrison slowly opened the folder.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Ethan's name was printed at the top.
But the name listed under biological father wasn't mine.
It belonged to Andrew Hale.
My brother.
I stumbled backward.
“No…”
Harrison reached for the document.
“Marcus, wait. This may not mean what you think.””
But I couldn't hear him.
My entire world had just collapsed.
May you like
And downstairs, the woman who had tried to destroy me was demanding that same document.
*What had Laura discovered about the two brothers—and why had she waited until her death to reveal it?*
