Chapter 8: The House That Was Never Hers
Marcus stared at the document.
“My name?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father and I created the trust before I disappeared. We wanted to make sure the next generation would have something secure, regardless of what happened to the business.””
Robert slowly sat down.
“I remember signing something like this.””
Thomas continued.
“The trust was supposed to protect your share of the property until you turned thirty-five. You're thirty-eight now. The ownership should have transferred to you three years ago.””
Marcus looked at his father.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I thought the agreement had been destroyed after Thomas disappeared. I never knew it was still valid.””
Evelyn suddenly laughed.
“That's impossible.””
Thomas turned toward her.
“Is it?””
“The property was transferred to Robert years ago!””
“Only the portion that belonged to him. The trust was never dissolved.””
Evelyn snatched the document and examined it.
Her face grew increasingly pale.
Marcus took it from her.
“Mom, why are you so frightened?””
“Because this document is meaningless.””
“Then why did you try to transfer the entire property?””
“I had permission from your father!””
Robert shook his head.
“Never.””
Evelyn turned toward him.
“You signed the original purchase agreement!””
“I signed the purchase agreement. I never signed anything giving you control over Marcus's trust.””
Thomas leaned back.
“There's another problem, Evelyn.””
She glared at him.
“What now?””
“The transfer application you submitted last month includes the entire property. That means you attempted to transfer an asset that doesn't belong to you.””
Marcus looked at the paperwork.
“Who submitted it?””
Thomas pointed to the signature.
“Your mother.””
Evelyn began pacing.
“This is a family matter. You have no right to interfere.””
Thomas gave her a cold smile.
“I am the person who helped create the trust. I have every right to make sure it is protected.””
Marcus turned toward his mother.
“Why did you do it?””
Evelyn stopped.
For several seconds, she looked like the woman he remembered from childhood.
Then her expression changed.
“Because I was tired of being poor.””
Marcus frowned.
“Poor?””
She laughed.
“You think having a beautiful house means having a beautiful life? Your father controlled every dollar. I had to ask him before buying a dress.
I had to explain every expense. I watched him give money to you whenever you needed it, but when I wanted something for myself, he called it unnecessary.””
Robert looked wounded.
“I never refused to provide for you.””
“You provided a roof and food!””
“I gave you everything I had!””
“And it was never enough!””
Her voice cracked.
She pointed toward Thomas.
“Then this man disappeared, and suddenly there was another fortune hidden somewhere. I spent years wondering how much money he had taken with him.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You could have asked.””
“I did! You ignored me!””
“Because you had already stolen from the company.””
Evelyn turned away.
Marcus looked at the woman he had called Mom his entire life.
“Was it worth it?””
She didn't answer.
“Was destroying Dad's reputation worth getting that money?””
Evelyn wiped her face.
“You don't understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She looked directly at him.
“Your father was going to give everything to you. The house, the company shares, the investments. What would I have left?””
Robert stood.
“You would have had your own retirement savings. You would have had your home. You would have had a husband who loved you.””
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“Love doesn't pay bills.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You had access to more money than most people ever see. You simply wanted what wasn't yours.””
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
“Can we stop pretending Evelyn did everything?””
Everyone turned.
She stepped away from the staircase.
“I didn't force anyone to do anything. She agreed to the plan because she wanted money too.””
Evelyn spun around.
“You suggested it!””
“And you approved it!””
Marcus stared at his wife.
“Tell me the truth. How much were you promised?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Twenty percent.””
“Twenty percent of what?””
“The investment account.””
Thomas laughed.
“That's more than two hundred thousand dollars.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I needed a fresh start.””
“With Daniel Carter?””
She nodded reluctantly.
Marcus looked at her for a long time.
“Were you planning to leave me after you got the money?””
Vanessa said nothing.
He waited.
Finally, she whispered, “Yes.””
Marcus felt something inside him go quiet.
Not anger.
Not even sadness.
Just the complete absence of whatever had once made him trust her.
He turned toward Thomas.
“Uncle, you said you had more documents.””
Thomas nodded.
He removed a thick folder from his bag.
“Bank records, company filings, copies of the original partnership agreement, and correspondence between Vanessa and me.””
Marcus opened it.
The first email was dated six months earlier.
Vanessa had asked Thomas to verify whether Robert still had authority over the dormant investment account.
The next email was more disturbing.
*If Robert becomes medically incapable, can his representative access the funds immediately?*
Thomas had replied that no transfer could happen without proper legal authorization.
Then Vanessa sent another message.
*What if his wife becomes the legal representative?*
Marcus looked up.
Evelyn had gone completely still.
The emails continued.
One contained a photograph of Robert's driver's license.
Another contained his retirement account details.
The final email was dated two days before the staged accusation.
*Everything is arranged. Once the incident happens, Marcus will support us. He always believes his mother.*
Marcus closed the folder.
“Mom, did you know she was using me?””
Evelyn looked away.
“I thought you would understand eventually.””
“Understand what?””
“That everything was being done for the family.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You didn't want to protect the family. You wanted to use me as another tool.””
Evelyn started crying.
Then Thomas reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.
“There is one final thing you should see.””
He handed it to Robert.
The envelope contained a letter dated twenty-six years earlier.
Robert unfolded it.
His hands began trembling.
It was a letter written by Thomas before he disappeared.
The first line read:
Robbie, if anything happens to me, don't trust the person who tells you I abandoned you.
Robert covered his mouth.
The letter continued.
I discovered that someone close to us has been moving company money. I believe your wife knows more than she's admitting. I tried to warn you, but I think she has already started turning you against me.
Robert slowly lowered the paper.
He looked at Evelyn.
“Did you know Thomas was innocent all along?””
She remained silent.
“Did you?””
Evelyn's tears stopped.
Then she said something nobody expected.
“I didn't make him disappear.””
Thomas stood abruptly.
“Who said anything about making me disappear?””
Evelyn looked frightened.
Robert stepped toward her.
“Evelyn, what did you do?””
She backed away.
“I only gave someone information. I didn't know what they were going to do!””
Thomas's face changed.
“What information?””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Marcus stared at her.
“Mom, who did you give information to?””
She looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don't.””
But Evelyn was already speaking.
“An old business partner. He wanted to know where Thomas was going that night.””
Robert's voice trembled.
“Who?””
Evelyn finally whispered the name.
“Richard Coleman.””
Thomas went completely still.
Robert looked confused.
“Richard was our accountant.””
Thomas slowly nodded.
“He was the man I discovered stealing from the company.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“Then what happened that night?””
Thomas stared at Evelyn.
“He never returned home.””
The room fell silent.
And just as Thomas began explaining what happened after he left the country, Marcus's phone rang.
It was Daniel.
“Marcus, I need you to come to my office immediately.””
“What happened?””
Daniel's voice was tense.
“Someone has filed a criminal complaint against your father.””
Marcus looked at Robert.
“What complaint?””
Daniel paused.
“Vanessa has formally accused him of sexual assault.””
Marcus turned toward his wife.
She wasn't crying anymore.

She was smiling.
And this time, everyone saw it.
