Chapter 1: The Detail Nobody Was Supposed to Notice
“Vanessa… wait a minute.””
Marcus's voice was suddenly different.
The trembling anger had disappeared, replaced by something colder.
Upstairs, Robert sat motionless at the kitchen table. He could hear the refrigerator humming and the faint ticking of the clock above the stove. His cheek still burned from Evelyn's slap.
Then he heard his son's footsteps.
“Mom, don't call the police yet,” Marcus said.
Evelyn answered sharply.
“What are you talking about? Your wife has just told us your father attacked her!””
“I know what she said. I just want to check something.””
Vanessa began crying again.
“Baby, please. Why are you doing this? Don't you believe me?””
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
Robert closed his eyes.
For the first time since the accusation, he felt a tiny spark of hope.
Perhaps his son had noticed something.
Perhaps the truth hadn't been completely buried beneath Vanessa's performance.
Upstairs, Marcus approached his wife.
“Vanessa, look at me.””
She wiped her cheeks with the sleeve of her torn blouse.
“What?””
“When you called me upstairs, you said Dad wouldn't let you leave the bedroom.””
“Yes.””
“You also said he grabbed your arm.””
“Yes, Marcus! How many times do I have to repeat myself?””
Marcus pointed toward her right wrist.
“Then why is the bruise on your left wrist?””
Vanessa froze.
It lasted barely two seconds, but Marcus noticed.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“What kind of question is that? She's traumatized. People react differently!””
Marcus shook his head.
“I'm not accusing her of anything. I'm asking a question.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his hand.
“Baby, I fell against the dresser when I tried to get away from him. I don't remember which side I hurt.””
Marcus looked down at her wrist.
The bruise was dark purple, almost circular, with four small marks around it.
He had seen those marks before.
Three days earlier, Vanessa had dropped a heavy glass vase in the living room. While cleaning the broken pieces, she had cut her wrist on a shard of glass. Marcus had personally driven her to urgent care.
But the marks he was looking at now weren't cuts.
They looked like fingerprints.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “where did that bruise come from?””
She pulled her hand away.
“Are you seriously interrogating me?””
“I'm trying to understand.””
“Then understand this! Your father attacked me!””
Evelyn wrapped an arm around her daughter-in-law.
“Enough, Marcus. Your father has been acting strangely for months. Maybe you haven't noticed because you're always working.””
That sentence made Vanessa look up.
For a brief moment, she and Evelyn exchanged a glance.
Marcus saw it.
He didn't say anything.
Instead, he walked toward the bedroom door and examined the lock.
“Who locked this?””
Vanessa immediately answered.
“Your father!””
“How?””
“He locked it from the inside.””
Marcus stared at the old brass lock.
It had been installed when the house was renovated twelve years earlier. The keyhole was on the hallway side, and the small thumb-turn was inside the bedroom.
“Dad was inside with you,” Marcus said.
“So how did you get out when I opened the door?””
“I was standing near the door!””
“That isn't what I asked.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Why are you doing this to me?””
Marcus took a breath.
“I'm going downstairs to talk to Dad.””
“No!””
Her scream startled Evelyn.
Vanessa grabbed his shirt.
“Don't leave me alone! Please, Marcus! I'm scared!””
He gently removed her fingers.
“Mom will stay with you.””
Evelyn immediately protested.
“Marcus, you cannot possibly be considering your father's explanation over your wife's!””
“I'm considering everything.””
He walked downstairs.
Robert looked up when his son entered the kitchen.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Marcus pulled out a chair.
“Dad, tell me exactly what happened.””
Robert's lips trembled.
“You believe me?””
“I said tell me what happened.””
Robert rubbed his forehead.
“Your wife came downstairs around eleven. She said she wanted to discuss something privately. I thought she needed help with the insurance papers you left on the dining table.””
“What happened next?””
“She asked me to come upstairs. When I entered the bedroom, she closed the door.””
“Did you touch her?””
Robert looked directly into his son's eyes.
“No. I swear on your mother's grave, Marcus. I never touched that woman.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Why did she say you attacked her?””
“I don't know. But there's something else.””
“What?””
Robert glanced toward the staircase.
“She was holding her phone before she started screaming.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I saw her looking at the screen. She wasn't frightened. She was waiting.””
Robert leaned forward.
“Son, I've lived seventy years. I've seen people angry, desperate, and dishonest. But the look on her face when she thought nobody was watching…”
He stopped.
“What look?””
Robert's voice dropped.
“She smiled.””
Marcus stared at him.
Then he remembered something.
The bedroom had a small security camera installed near the ceiling.
It had been placed there six months earlier after Vanessa complained that expensive jewelry had disappeared from the house.
Marcus stood abruptly.
“The camera.””
Robert looked confused.
“What camera?””
“The one in your bedroom hallway. It records the staircase and the bedroom entrance.””
He pulled out his phone and opened the security application.
The camera feed loaded.
But the screen displayed a message.
<escape>DEVICE DISCONNECTED.</escape>
Marcus tried refreshing.
Nothing.
He checked the recording history.
The last saved video was from 10:47 that morning.
The incident had supposedly happened at 11:15.
“That's strange,” Marcus whispered.
Robert's face tightened.
“What?””
Marcus turned the phone around.
“Someone disconnected the camera twenty-eight minutes before Vanessa called me.””
At that exact moment, Evelyn appeared at the kitchen entrance.
Her face had gone pale.
“Marcus,” she said, “put that phone away.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because your wife doesn't need to be investigated like a criminal.””
Marcus slowly stood.
“Mom, who disconnected the camera?””
Evelyn opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Vanessa's voice rang from upstairs.
“EVELYN! YOU PROMISED YOU WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT!””
The kitchen went silent.

Marcus turned toward the staircase.
And for the first time that afternoon, he began to wonder whether his father had been the only person trapped in that bedroom.
