Chapter 9: The Truth That Broke Them Apart
Sadie couldn't move.
She had imagined this moment countless times without realizing it.
Meeting her father.
Hearing his voice.
Looking into the eyes of the man whose absence had shaped her entire childhood.
But none of those dreams included this.
No warmth.
No tears.
No apology.
Just a room full of enemies and secrets.
Adrian Moretti stood several feet away from her, studying her face like he was searching for pieces of someone else.
Her mother.
Maybe.
Or maybe himself.
"I know what you think of me," Adrian said.
Sadie said nothing.
Because she didn't know what she thought.
That was the terrifying part.
For years, she had believed her father was dead.
A painful but simple truth.
Now she had a living man standing in front of her, and he had brought an entire storm with him.
"You think I abandoned you.""
Sadie's jaw tightened.
"You did.""
The words came out immediately.
Adrian looked down.
For the first time, something human appeared on his face.
Regret.
But Sadie didn't let it soften her.
"You left.""
"I did.""
"You let me believe you were dead.""
"Yes.""
"You let my mother disappear.""
His expression changed.
"I never wanted Isabella to leave.""
Sadie laughed bitterly.
"That doesn't matter.""
Adrian looked at her.
"It does.""
"No.""
Her voice grew stronger.
"It doesn't.""
She stepped forward.
"You don't get to appear after twenty-six years and decide what matters.""
Damian watched her carefully.
Not interfering.
Not protecting her from the conversation.
And Sadie noticed.
For once, he was letting her choose.
"I spent my whole life wondering why I wasn't enough.""
The words surprised even her.
But once they started, they wouldn't stop.
"I thought maybe you didn't want me.""
Adrian's face tightened.
"I did.""
"Then why?""
The question filled the room.
Why?
The question every abandoned child carried.
Why wasn't I worth staying for?
Adrian looked away.
"Because I was a coward.""
The answer stunned her.
Not because it fixed anything.
Because it was honest.
"I spent my life surrounded by people who feared me.""
His voice lowered.
"But the person I feared most was myself.""
Sadie stared.
"I became exactly what I hated.""
A silence followed.
Then Damian spoke.
"Don't rewrite history.""
Everyone looked at him.
His expression was cold.
Adrian smiled faintly.
"There he is.""
Damian stepped forward.
"The man who thinks he knows everything.""
"No.""
Adrian looked at him.
"The boy who never understood what happened.""
Damian's hands tightened.
"You killed my father.""
The room went silent.
Adrian didn't deny it.
Instead, he looked tired.
"Your father made choices.""
"Don't.""
"He trusted the wrong people.""
"You killed him.""
Adrian looked at Damian.
"And you never asked why.""
Damian's expression changed.
Sadie noticed.
Again.
That same hesitation.
That same pain.
"What is he talking about?"" she asked.
Neither man answered.
Sadie looked at Damian.
"I asked you for the truth.""
"I know.""
"Then give it to me.""
Damian closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, something had changed.
He looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
"The night my father died...""
He stopped.
Then continued.
"I wasn't supposed to be there.""
Sadie listened.
"I came home early.""
His voice became quieter.
"I heard my parents arguing.""
Victoria looked down.
Like she had heard this before.
"My father was angry because he found out my mother had been working with Adrian.""
Sadie looked at Adrian.
He didn't react.
"He wanted to expose everyone involved.""
Damian swallowed.
"My mother begged him not to.""
"Why?""
"Because she knew what would happen.""
Sadie waited.
"And then?""
Damian looked at the floor.
"I heard a gunshot.""
The room became still.
"I ran downstairs.""
His voice cracked.
"And I found my father.""
Sadie felt her chest tighten.
"And Adrian?""
Damian looked at him.
"He was gone.""
Adrian's expression remained calm.
"Because I left.""
Sadie looked at him.
"You expect that to help?""
"No.""
Adrian shook his head.
"I expect you to understand that the story you were given was incomplete.""
Damian's eyes narrowed.
"What aren't you saying?""
Adrian looked at him.
"You were there before I left.""
The words hit.
Sadie turned.
"Damian?""
He didn't answer.
Her heart sank.
"No.""
Damian's voice was low.
"Sadie.""
"What did he mean?""
He looked away.
And that was enough.
"You remember.""
A painful silence.
Then Damian whispered:
"Yes.""
Sadie's breath caught.
"You remember what happened that night?""
"Yes.""
"And you never told me?""
Damian looked at her.
"I didn't remember everything.""
"But you remembered something.""
He nodded.
Sadie stepped back.
The distance between them suddenly felt enormous.
"Why?""
Damian's eyes filled with something she had never seen before.
Shame.
"Because I was eighteen.""
The explanation felt small.
Too small.
"You were afraid.""
"Yes.""
"And then?""
He looked at his hands.
"I spent years trying to find the truth.""
Sadie shook her head.
"But you never told me.""
"No.""
"Why?""
Damian looked at her.
"Because the truth involved you.""
She froze.
"What?""
Adrian spoke.
"Now we get to the part no one wants to tell you.""
Damian's expression hardened.
"Stop.""
"No.""
Adrian looked at Sadie.
"Your mother didn't ask Damian to hide the truth because she didn't trust you.""
Sadie waited.
"She asked him because she knew what would happen if you found out.""
"What?""
Adrian's voice became quiet.
"She knew you would come looking for me.""
Sadie frowned.
"Why would I?""
"Because you are like her.""
The words hurt.
Because they sounded like a compliment.
"You don't give up.""
Adrian looked at the key in her hand.
"And that is why she hid the vault.""
Sadie looked down.
"The vault.""
Adrian nodded.
"Your mother left something there.""
"What?""
"A recording.""
Damian looked at him sharply.
"What?""
Adrian smiled sadly.
"Isabella wanted Sadie to hear the truth from her.""
Sadie's heart raced.
"My mother?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Adrian looked at Damian.
"Ask him.""
Sadie turned.
Again.
The same answer.
Always Damian.
Always another hidden piece.
"Damian.""
He looked broken.
"I was trying to find it.""
"Find what?""
"The recording.""
"Why?""
"Because I thought it would explain everything.""
"And?""
"I found the vault.""
Sadie's eyes widened.
"When?""
"Before we met.""
The words were a knife.
"You knew where it was?""
"Yes.""
"And you didn't open it?""
"I couldn't.""
"Why?""
Damian reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small object.
A matching key.
Sadie stared.
"You had one too.""
He nodded.
"Your mother gave it to me.""
Her heart sank.
"Before she disappeared?""
"Yes.""
"And you kept it?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Damian looked at her.
"Because she made me promise.""
"What promise?""
His voice became barely audible.
"That I would protect you.""
Sadie's eyes filled.
Not with tears.
With confusion.
Anger.
Pain.
"You promised my mother.""
"Yes.""
"Before you even knew me.""
"Yes.""
She looked away.
That hurt.
Not because he protected her.
Because she didn't know if he loved her...
Or if he had simply fulfilled a promise.
Adrian watched them silently.
Then he said:
"This is why I came.""
Nobody moved.
"The vault is not just about your past.""
He looked at Sadie.
"It's about your future.""
A chill went through her.
"What does that mean?""
Adrian's expression became serious.
"It means someone is trying to kill you.""
Damian immediately moved.
"Who?""
Adrian looked toward the dark windows.
"Someone who believes Sadie is the last obstacle.""
"To what?""
Adrian's eyes returned to her.
"To controlling everything.""
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Not Damian's.
Not Victoria's.
Sadie's.
She looked down.
An unknown number.
Her hand trembled as she answered.
"Hello?""
At first, silence.
Then a familiar voice.
Trevor.
"Sadie.""
Her face changed.
"How did you get this number?""
He ignored the question.
"You need to listen to me.""
She almost laughed.
"Why would I?""
"Because I know who betrayed you.""
The room went quiet.
Damian immediately looked at her.
Trevor continued.
"It's not Adrian.""
Sadie froze.
"It's not Damian either.""
A pause.
Then Trevor whispered:
"It's someone you trust.""
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
"Who?""
The answer came.
And every person in the room went still.
"Your mother.""
Sadie's blood turned cold.
Because before she could respond...
The call ended.
And on her phone screen appeared a new message.
A photograph.
A photograph of Isabella Moretti.
Alive.
Standing beside another person.
A person Sadie recognized immediately.
Her entire world collapsed.
May you like
Because beside her mother...
Was Trevor Evans.
