Chapter 10: The Daughter Who Chose Her Own Name
The photograph trembled in Sadie's hand.
She stared at the screen.
Again.
And again.
As if looking longer would somehow change what she saw.
Her mother.
Alive.
Standing beside Trevor Evans.
The man who had destroyed years of her life.
The man who had emptied their savings.
The man who had left her sleeping in her car.
The man who had looked her in the eyes only hours ago and called her nothing.
"No.""
The word escaped before she realized she had spoken.
Damian immediately moved closer.
"What is it?""
Sadie didn't answer.
She couldn't.
Her entire body felt frozen.
Victoria stepped forward.
"Sadie?""
Slowly, she handed the phone to Damian.
His expression changed the moment he saw the image.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
And that terrified her.
"You know.""
Damian looked at her.
"No.""
"You know something.""
"I know Trevor.""
She shook her head.
"That's not what I mean.""
The room became silent.
Because everyone knew.
Damian had secrets.
But Sadie had reached the point where she couldn't survive another one.
"Tell me.""
Damian looked at the photograph again.
Then at Adrian.
Then at Victoria.
Finally, he looked at Sadie.
"Trevor was never just your ex.""
Her heart sank.
"What does that mean?""
Adrian answered.
"It means he was placed in your life.""
The room went completely still.
Sadie laughed once.
A broken sound.
"No.""
Adrian looked at her.
"Yes.""
"You expect me to believe that?""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"I expect you to ask questions.""
Sadie looked at Damian.
"Is this true?""
Damian didn't answer.
And that was the answer.
She closed her eyes.
Another lie.
Another hidden truth.
"How long?""
Damian's voice was quiet.
"I don't know.""
"Don't do that.""
She looked at him.
"Don't give me half answers.""
He nodded slowly.
"I found evidence recently.""
"Recently?""
"After Trevor appeared again.""
Sadie stared.
"So when he walked into that boutique...""
"He wasn't there by accident.""
The memory replayed.
The way Trevor looked at her.
The way he pushed her.
The way he wanted everyone watching.
It wasn't just cruelty.
It was a message.
"He wanted you to react.""
Damian nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Adrian stepped forward.
"Because he needed to know if you remembered anything.""
Sadie frowned.
"Remembered what?""
Nobody answered.
She looked around the room.
"I'm tired of this.""
Her voice rose.
"I'm tired of everyone looking at me like I'm holding some secret I don't even know.""
She pointed at herself.
"I'm not a weapon.""
"No.""
Adrian's voice softened.
"You are a person.""
She looked at him.
"Then stop treating me like something people fight over.""
A silence followed.
Then Damian said:
"You're right.""
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
"I spent years protecting you from the truth.""
His voice lowered.
"But I forgot that protecting someone also means trusting them.""
Sadie's eyes filled.
Not because the pain disappeared.
Because those were the words she had needed to hear.
"I love you.""
Damian's voice was quiet.
"I need you to know that none of this started because of a promise.""
Sadie looked at him.
"The first time I saw you, I didn't know your family name.""
A pause.
"I didn't know who your mother was.""
Another.
"I didn't know about Adrian.""
He stepped closer.
"I only knew you.""
The room was silent.
"And I loved you before I knew anything else.""
Sadie looked away.
Because part of her wanted to believe him.
And part of her was terrified.
Terrified that love could still come with secrets.
Then Adrian spoke.
"Trevor knows where Isabella is.""
Everyone turned.
Sadie's breath caught.
"What?""
Adrian nodded.
"The photograph wasn't sent to hurt you.""
"Then why?""
"To force you to choose.""
"Choose what?""
Adrian looked at Damian.
Then at her.
"Whether you trust the man who protected you...""
He paused.
"Or the man who betrayed you.""
A phone rang.
This time, it was Damian's.
He answered immediately.
"Yes.""
A few seconds passed.
His face changed.
"Where?""
Everyone watched him.
Then:
"Don't touch anything.""
He ended the call.
Sadie knew.
"What happened?""
Damian looked at her.
"We found Trevor.""
Her heart stopped.
"Where?""
"In the old Moretti estate.""
Adrian's expression darkened.
"No.""
Damian looked at him.
"You know something.""
Adrian didn't answer.
Victoria stepped closer.
"That place was abandoned.""
Adrian shook his head.
"Not abandoned.""
Sadie looked between them.
"What is there?""
Adrian's face became serious.
"The truth.""
The old Moretti estate stood outside the city.
A place hidden behind tall iron gates and years of forgotten history.
Sadie sat in the car beside Damian.
Neither spoke.
Too much had happened.
Too many truths.
Too many wounds.
Finally, Sadie whispered:
"I don't know who I am anymore.""
Damian looked at her.
"You're Sadie.""
She gave a small, sad smile.
"That used to be enough.""
"It still is.""
She looked out the window.
"My blood says Moretti.""
"Your choices say Sadie.""
She looked at him.
"And what about Blackwood?""
Damian smiled faintly.
"My name doesn't define you.""
A pause.
"You define yourself.""
For the first time all night, she believed him.
When they arrived, the gates were already open.
A bad sign.
Damian immediately noticed.
"Stay close.""
Sadie nodded.
Inside the mansion, everything was covered in dust.
Except one room.
The library.
A light was on.
And someone was waiting.
Trevor.
He stood near the fireplace.
No expensive suit.
No arrogant smile.
Just a tired man who looked like he had finally run out of places to hide.
"Sadie.""
She stopped.
"You have a lot to explain.""
Trevor nodded.
"I know.""
Damian stepped forward.
"You used her.""
Trevor looked at him.
"Yes.""
The honesty surprised everyone.
"I did.""
Sadie's eyes hardened.
"Why?""
Trevor looked at her.
"Because I was scared.""
She almost laughed.
"Everyone says that.""
"I know.""
He swallowed.
"But it's true.""
He looked around the old room.
"My father worked for the Morettis.""
Sadie froze.
"What?""
"He knew Isabella.""
Trevor looked at the floor.
"When I met you, I didn't know who you were.""
Sadie stared.
"Then when did you find out?""
"After I left.""
The words hurt.
"After you abandoned me.""
Trevor nodded.
"Yes.""
He didn't defend himself.
That made it worse.
"I found documents.""
He looked at Damian.
"About Alexander. About Isabella. About you.""
"And you decided to use me.""
Trevor closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
The room was silent.
Sadie looked at him.
The man she once loved.
The man who broke her.
And for the first time, she didn't feel anger.
She felt pity.
"You were never sorry you hurt me.""
Trevor looked at her.
"I was.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"You were sorry when you realized I mattered.""
Trevor had no answer.
Because she was right.
Then a hidden door opened behind the bookshelf.
Everyone turned.
Inside was a small room.
A safe.
And on the table...
A recording device.
Damian walked forward slowly.
"This is it.""
Sadie stared.
Her mother's final message.
Her entire life.
Everything.
She pressed play.
A familiar voice filled the room.
"Sadie.""
Her mother's voice.
Older.
Tired.
But full of love.
"If you are hearing this, then I failed to keep you away from this world.""
Sadie's eyes filled.
"But I need you to understand something.""
A pause.
"I never hid your identity because I was ashamed of you.""
The recording continued.
"I hid it because I was proud of you.""
Sadie covered her mouth.
"You were never a weapon.""
Isabella's voice shook.
"You were never an inheritance.""
A pause.
"You were my daughter.""
Everyone stood silently.
"Adrian will tell you he is your father.""
The room went still.
"He is.""
Sadie looked at Adrian.
"But blood does not make someone a parent.""
A tear fell.
"Alexander loved you.""
Damian lowered his head.
"He gave his life protecting you.""
The recording continued.
"But the person who truly saved you was the person who chose you.""
Sadie's eyes moved to Damian.
"I asked Damian to protect you because I knew something.""
A pause.
"I knew he would love you.""
Damian closed his eyes.
The words broke something inside him.
"And Sadie...""
Her mother's voice softened.
"Never let anyone tell you that your name decides your worth.""
The recording ended.
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Then Sadie slowly turned.
She looked at Adrian.
At Damian.
At Trevor.
At Victoria.
All the people who had carried pieces of her story.
Then she looked at herself.
And finally understood.
She wasn't Moretti.
She wasn't Blackwood.
She wasn't the girl Trevor abandoned.
She wasn't the secret everyone fought over.
She was Sadie Bennett.
And that was enough.
Months later, the city would talk about what happened.
They would talk about the collapse of the Moretti empire.
The fall of corrupt leaders.
The secrets revealed.
But Sadie remembered something different.
She remembered standing in that jewelry boutique.
On the marble floor.
Broken.
Humiliated.
Thinking she had lost everything.
She remembered Damian kneeling beside her.
Not because she was powerful.
Not because of her blood.
Because she was hurt.
Because she was Sadie.

And when the world tried to decide who she was...
She finally decided for herself.
