Chapter 6: The Truth Inside the House

*ASK YOUR HUSBAND WHY.*

Sadie stared at the message until the words blurred.

Three simple words.

Three words that felt heavier than any confession she had heard that night.

She looked at Damian.

And for the first time since she met him...

She wondered if there was a part of him she had never truly known.

"Why?""

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Damian didn't move.

The silence answered before he did.

Sadie's fingers tightened around the paper.

"Why would someone leave this for me?""

Damian looked toward the security team.

"Everyone out.""

Nobody questioned him.

Within seconds, the room emptied.

The door closed.

Now it was only them.

Sadie and Damian.

Two people who had promised each other honesty.

Two people standing in the middle of a lifetime of secrets.

"Tell me.""

Damian looked at her.

"I don't know what they mean.""

The answer came too quickly.

Sadie noticed.

"You do.""

"No.""

"Damian.""

His jaw tightened.

"Sadie, I swear to you—"

"You swear?""

The pain in her voice stopped him.

Because that was the problem.

She believed him.

She always had.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

"Do you understand what tonight feels like?""

Damian stayed silent.

"I found out my mother is alive.""

Her voice trembled.

"I found out my entire childhood was built on lies.""

She looked at the photograph of Isabella and Alexander.

"I found out my father isn't who I thought he was.""

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"And now someone is telling me to ask my husband why.""

Damian stepped closer.

"Sadie.""

She moved back.

Not because she was afraid of him.

Because she was afraid of what he would say.

"Tell me the truth.""

"I am.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"You are telling me pieces.""

The accusation hurt because it was accurate.

Damian looked away.

And that was the moment Sadie knew.

There was something.

Something he was still holding back.

"What happened between our families?""

Damian didn't answer.

"Damian.""

Finally, he said:

"Your mother and my father were connected.""

"I know.""

"No.""

His voice lowered.

"You don't.""

Sadie waited.

"Alexander Blackwood wasn't just protecting Isabella from Adrian.""

"What else?""

Damian took a breath.

"He was protecting you.""

The answer didn't surprise her anymore.

Everything seemed to lead back to her.

But she didn't understand why.

"Why me?""

Damian walked toward the window.

"When my father discovered what Adrian planned, he tried to stop him.""

"What plan?""

Damian's face hardened.

"To control everything.""

Sadie frowned.

"Everything?""

"The Moretti family had power. Money. Influence.""

He paused.

"But my father discovered something Adrian wanted more than any of that.""

"What?""

Damian looked at her.

"You.""

The word made her freeze.

"Me?""

"Not you as a person.""

He looked frustrated.

"Your existence.""

Sadie shook her head.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"I know.""

"Why would a child matter?""

Damian looked at the photograph.

"Because your birth created a problem.""

"What problem?""

He hesitated.

Then:

"An inheritance.""

Sadie stared.

"What?""

"Your mother's family had an old rule.""

He spoke slowly.

"Control of the Moretti organization could not pass through Adrian if Isabella's child was alive.""

Sadie felt sick.

"You're saying...""

"Adrian believed you were the obstacle between him and everything he wanted.""

The room became silent.

Her entire life suddenly looked different.

The ordinary childhood.

The quiet town.

The years of being nobody.

All because people were afraid of what she represented.

"My mother ran because of me.""

"No.""

Damian's answer was immediate.

"Your mother ran because of Adrian.""

"But if I didn't exist—"

"Don't.""

His voice became firm.

Sadie looked at him.

"Don't blame yourself for other people's greed.""

The words hit her harder than she expected.

Because that was what she had always done.

With Trevor.

With every failure.

With every painful memory.

She always searched for the thing she could have done differently.

Damian knew that.

He had always known.

"You knew my mother.""

"Yes.""

"How?""

He was quiet.

Then he said:

"She came to my father for help.""

Sadie frowned.

"Before you were born?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Damian looked at her.

"Because my father died before I understood everything.""

"And after?""

"After I found out.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"When?""

Damian looked down.

"Six months before we met.""

Sadie's heart sank.

Six months.

He had known.

Before their first date.

Before he held her hand.

Before he told her he loved her.

"Six months?""

"Sadie—"

"You knew my name.""

"Yes.""

"You knew my mother.""

"Yes.""

"You knew my family was connected to yours.""

"Yes.""

"And you still approached me.""

Damian didn't defend himself.

Because he couldn't.

Sadie turned away.

The pain was quieter now.

Which was worse.

"You were investigating me.""

"No.""

The answer was immediate.

"I was protecting you.""

She looked back.

"At first.""

That small pause hurt.

"At first?""

Damian closed his eyes.

"I wanted to understand why Isabella disappeared.""

Sadie stared.

"And then?""

His expression changed.

"Then I met you.""

The room went quiet.

"I stopped seeing a mystery.""

His voice softened.

"I saw a woman who apologized when someone bumped into her.""

Sadie's eyes lowered.

"I saw someone who gave her last dollar to a stranger.""

A painful smile touched his face.

"I saw someone who thought kindness was weakness because people had taken advantage of it her whole life.""

Sadie swallowed.

"And you fell in love with me.""

"Yes.""

The answer was simple.

No hesitation.

No excuse.

"I fell in love with you.""

Her anger weakened.

But it didn't disappear.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Damian looked away.

"Because I was afraid.""

That surprised her.

"Afraid?""

"Yes.""

"Of what?""

He looked at her.

"Of losing the only person who ever saw me as a man instead of a name.""

Sadie didn't know what to say.

Because she understood that feeling.

Being reduced to something you couldn't control.

A reputation.

A history.

A mistake someone else made.

Before she could respond, a loud crash echoed from downstairs.

Both of them turned.

Damian instantly changed.

The softness vanished.

The dangerous man returned.

"Stay here.""

Sadie grabbed his arm.

"No.""

"Sadie.""

"I am done being the person everyone hides things from.""

His eyes met hers.

"I need you to trust me.""

"I do.""

The answer surprised him.

"That's why I'm coming with you.""

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

"Stay behind me.""

They moved through the house.

The mansion that had always felt safe suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Every shadow looked different.

Every corner held a possibility.

As they reached the main hall, Damian's security team stood frozen.

One guard approached.

"Mr. Blackwood.""

"What happened?""

The man looked uncomfortable.

"Someone entered through the east entrance.""

"How?""

The guard swallowed.

"They had access.""

Damian's expression darkened.

"Who?""

The guard didn't answer.

Instead, he handed Damian a security photograph.

Damian looked at it.

Then his face changed.

Sadie stepped closer.

"What is it?""

He didn't want her to see.

But she already did.

The photograph showed a woman walking into their home.

A woman Sadie had never seen before.

But Damian had.

Because his reaction said everything.

"Who is she?""

Damian remained silent.

"Damian.""

Finally, he whispered:

"My sister.""

Sadie looked at him.

"You have a sister?""

The question came out before she could stop it.

Because in all the time she had known Damian...

He had never mentioned one.

Not once.

Then the front doors opened.

Slowly.

A woman stepped inside.

Dark hair.

Cold eyes.

A familiar confidence.

She looked exactly like someone born into power.

Her gaze moved to Sadie.

Then to Damian.

"Brother.""

Damian's face hardened.

"Victoria.""

The woman smiled slightly.

"Still protecting her?""

Nobody spoke.

Victoria looked at Sadie's ring.

Then back at Damian.

"I warned you what would happen if you married her.""

Sadie's stomach tightened.

"Why?""

Victoria ignored her.

She looked directly at Damian.

"Because you didn't marry a woman, Damian.""

A slow smile appeared on her face.

"You married a war.""

Then she looked at Sadie.

"And unfortunately...""

May you like

Her smile disappeared.

"...you just became the reason it starts again.""
