Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Door
"Come downstairs, Sadie.""
The voice echoed through the mansion.
Cold.
Calm.
Certain.
Like the person speaking already knew how everything would end.
Sadie stood frozen behind Damian.
Her heart was pounding so loudly she could barely hear the alarms.
For years, she had imagined meeting her father.
A thousand different versions.
A man crying.
A man apologizing.
A man explaining why he disappeared.
Never this.
Never a voice coming through speakers in a dark mansion while armed guards searched the halls.
Never a man who sounded like he was calling his daughter into a battlefield.
Damian tightened his grip on her hand.
"You're not going anywhere.""
Sadie looked at him.
"He's my father.""
"He's dangerous.""
"So are you.""
The words came out before she could stop them.
The silence that followed hurt.
Damian looked at her.
Not angry.
Just wounded.
"I know.""
That answer surprised her.
Because she expected him to deny it.
Instead, he accepted it.
"I know what people say about me.""
The mansion lights flickered.
Then returned.
Dimly.
Enough to reveal the fear on everyone's faces.
Victoria stepped closer.
"Adrian wouldn't come here alone.""
Damian looked at the guards.
"How many?""
One of them answered immediately.
"We don't know. The cameras went offline.""
Damian's expression hardened.
"Find out.""
The guard nodded and disappeared.
Sadie looked at Victoria.
"You knew my father was capable of this?""
Victoria didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
"You all knew.""
Her voice cracked.
"My whole life, everyone knew something.""
She looked at Damian.
"And I was just the last person to find out.""
Damian stepped toward her.
"Sadie.""
She moved back.
The small movement hurt him.
She saw it.
But she couldn't stop.
Not yet.
Her entire world had changed too many times in one night.
A mother who was alive.
A father who wasn't dead.
A family she never knew existed.
A husband with secrets.
She didn't know what was real anymore.
The speakers crackled again.
"Damian.""
Everyone froze.
Adrian's voice.
"Still hiding behind her?""
Damian looked toward the ceiling.
"Show yourself.""
A low laugh came through the speakers.
"You always sounded like your father.""
Damian's expression changed.
A flash of anger.
"Don't say his name.""
"Why?""
Adrian's voice became amused.
"Because it reminds you that you failed him?""
The room went silent.
Sadie looked at Damian.
He looked like he had been hit.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
"You don't know anything about my father.""
"I know exactly what happened.""
A pause.
Then Adrian said:
"I know he died because he trusted the wrong person.""
Victoria's face changed.
Sadie noticed.
"What does he mean?""
Nobody answered.
The silence became unbearable.
"Damian?""
He looked away.
That was when she knew.
There was another secret.
Another piece.
Victoria finally spoke.
"Adrian is manipulating you.""
Sadie looked at her.
"Is he lying?""
Victoria didn't answer.
Sadie felt anger rise.
"Is he lying?""
This time, Victoria looked down.
And Sadie understood.
Maybe not the whole truth.
But enough.
"What happened to Alexander?""
Damian closed his eyes.
"Sadie.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I need to know.""
A long silence.
Then Damian said:
"My father trusted someone close to him.""
"Who?""
He looked at Victoria.
Then away.
"Someone betrayed him.""
Sadie waited.
"Who?""
Before Damian could answer, a gunshot echoed.
Everyone moved.
Damian immediately pulled Sadie behind him.
The sound came from the east hallway.
A guard rushed in.
"Mr. Blackwood!""
"What happened?""
The guard looked terrified.
"We found them.""
"Who?""
The guard swallowed.
"The people inside.""
Damian's eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?""
The guard hesitated.
Then:
"They weren't attackers.""
A cold feeling moved through Sadie.
"Then who were they?""
The guard looked at Damian.
"Your employees.""
The room went silent.
Damian's face became unreadable.
"Impossible.""
"They disabled the system. They opened the gates.""
Victoria whispered:
"Someone has been preparing this for a long time.""
Sadie looked at Damian.
"And you didn't know?""
He didn't answer.
Because he didn't.
For the first time, Sadie saw something she had never seen before.
Damian Blackwood was not in control.
The man everyone feared.
The man who could destroy companies with a phone call.
The man who always had a plan.
Was standing in his own home...
And someone had beaten him.
The speakers turned on again.
"Sadie.""
Adrian's voice.
"Your husband wants to protect you.""
Sadie stared upward.
"But ask him what happened the night Alexander Blackwood died.""
Damian's expression changed.
"Don't listen to him.""
Adrian continued.
"Ask him why his father left behind a message.""
Victoria looked suddenly alarmed.
"Stop.""
Adrian laughed.
"Ask him why that message said...""
A pause.
Then:
"The girl must never know what Damian did.""
The air disappeared from the room.
Sadie slowly turned toward Damian.
"What?""
Damian looked at her.
"Sadie.""
"What did he mean?""
He didn't answer.
And that was enough.
"No.""
She stepped back.
"Tell me.""
Damian's face tightened.
"Please.""
The word came from him quietly.
Not an order.
A plea.
But she couldn't accept that.
"Did you do something?""
"No.""
The answer came instantly.
"Then why can't you say it?""
Because he was silent.
Because he was afraid.
Because something existed between them that she didn't know.
Something connected to the night his father died.
Victoria stepped forward.
"Sadie, you need to understand—"
"No.""
Sadie looked at her.
"No more explanations from everyone except him.""
She looked at Damian.
"I want you to tell me.""
He stared at her.
For several seconds.
Then:
"When I was eighteen...""
His voice was quieter.
"My father died.""
Sadie listened.
"I found out he had been investigating the Moretti family.""
She nodded.
"I know.""
"No.""
Damian shook his head.
"He wasn't just investigating them.""
He swallowed.
"He was investigating the person who betrayed him.""
Sadie waited.
"And that person was...""
Damian's eyes moved to Victoria.
Then back to Sadie.
"My mother.""
The words stunned her.
"What?""
Victoria closed her eyes.
Damian continued.
"My mother gave information to Adrian.""
"Why?""
"Because she was trying to save me.""
Sadie stared.
"I don't understand.""
"Adrian threatened my family.""
Damian's voice cracked slightly.
"My mother made a deal.""
"With him?""
"Yes.""
"And your father died because of it?""
Damian looked down.
"Yes.""
The room became silent.
Sadie felt her anger shift.
Not disappear.
Shift.
Because now she saw the pain behind his secrets.
The same pain she carried.
Being hurt by the people who were supposed to protect you.
The speakers crackled again.
Adrian's voice returned.
"Beautiful, isn't it?""
Nobody spoke.
"Two children.""
A pause.
"Both betrayed by their parents.""
Sadie looked toward the speakers.
"What do you want?""
The entire mansion went silent.
Because it was the first time she had spoken directly to him.
Adrian answered immediately.
"I want my daughter.""
Sadie's stomach tightened.
"You don't know me.""
"No.""
His voice softened.
"But I know what you carry.""
She frowned.
"What?""
"The key.""
Everyone froze.
Victoria looked at Sadie.
Damian looked at her.
"What key?""
Sadie slowly reached into her pocket.
The small metal key.
The one Victoria gave her.
She had forgotten she was holding it.
Adrian laughed quietly.
"There it is.""
Damian's face changed.
"Sadie, give me the key.""
She looked at him.
"Why?""
Before he could answer, Adrian spoke.
"Because Damian knows exactly what that key opens.""
Sadie stared at her husband.
The silence was unbearable.
"Damian?""
He looked at her.
And she knew.
He knew.
Again.
"Tell me.""
His voice was barely audible.
"It opens a vault.""
"What vault?""
Damian didn't answer.
Victoria did.
"The vault your father created.""
Sadie looked between them.
"What is inside?""
Nobody spoke.
Then Damian said:
"The truth.""
The speakers went silent.
A moment later, the front doors of the mansion opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Silver hair.
Expensive suit.
Cold eyes.
But there was something else.
Something Sadie hated admitting.
Something familiar.
He looked at her like he had spent twenty-six years searching for a missing piece of himself.
"Hello, Sadie.""
Her breath stopped.
Adrian Moretti had finally entered the room.
And the first thing he said was:
"I know you hate me.""
He looked at Damian.
"But before you decide who the villain is...""
His eyes returned to Sadie.
"Ask your husband why your mother begged him to never tell you the truth.""
Damian went completely still.
May you like
And Sadie realized the worst part.
She no longer knew which side of the story she was standing on.
