Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Ring
The silence inside the jewelry boutique felt heavier than the marble beneath Sadie's feet.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Even the employees who had been pretending not to watch were frozen in place.
Trevor Evans stared at Damian Blackwood as if the world had suddenly stopped making sense.
Then his eyes dropped to Sadie's hand.
To the platinum ring.
His face changed.
Not confusion anymore.
Fear.
"You..."" Trevor whispered.
Sadie looked between them.
She had spent the last ten minutes fighting to keep control of herself, but now something else was happening.
Something she didn't understand.
Damian Blackwood knew Trevor.
Not just knew him.
Trevor looked terrified of him.
Damian's arm remained around Sadie's shoulders.
A quiet gesture.
A protective one.
But Sadie felt the tension beneath it.
The controlled anger.
The kind of anger that didn't need shouting.
"How do you know him?"" Sadie asked softly.
Damian didn't answer immediately.
His eyes stayed on Trevor.
"That's a conversation for later.""
Trevor let out a nervous laugh.
"No. No, this isn't what it looks like.""
Damian tilted his head slightly.
"Isn't it?""
Trevor swallowed.
"I didn't know.""
"Know what?""
Trevor's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
That was when Sadie noticed something.
For the first time since she had seen Trevor again, he wasn't performing.
No charming smile.
No arrogant comments.
No cruel jokes.
He was afraid.
And Sadie had never seen Trevor Evans afraid of anyone.
Chloe stepped forward.
Her confidence had disappeared.
"Trevor?""
He ignored her.
His eyes remained fixed on Damian.
"She's your wife?""
Damian's expression hardened.
"Yes.""
A whisper moved through the boutique.
Sadie barely heard it.
Because her mind was stuck on one thing.
The way Damian had said it.
Not like a business arrangement.
Not like an obligation.
Like it mattered.
Trevor looked at Sadie.
"You married him?""
Sadie frowned.
"You say that like it's impossible.""
Trevor's face twisted.
"It is.""
Damian's eyes narrowed.
"Choose your next words carefully.""
Trevor immediately stopped.
Sadie noticed.
And that bothered her more than anything.
Because she knew Trevor.
She knew the man who could argue for hours.
The man who never admitted he was wrong.
The man who once threw a plate against a wall because she questioned his spending.
Yet now, one sentence from Damian Blackwood had reduced him to silence.
"Why are you scared of him?"" Sadie asked.
Trevor looked away.
"I’m not.""
A lie.
A terrible one.
Damian stepped closer.
"Three years ago, Trevor Evans made a decision.""
Trevor's face went pale.
"Don't.""
Sadie looked at Damian.
"What decision?""
Damian finally looked at her.
And for a moment, the cold expression disappeared.
Only for a moment.
"He sold information.""
Trevor's jaw tightened.
"That has nothing to do with her.""
Sadie's stomach dropped.
"What information?""
Nobody answered.
Damian's silence told her enough.
The man she had spent years trying to forget was connected to something much bigger than she realized.
Something dangerous.
Trevor looked at Damian.
"You promised.""
Damian's expression didn't change.
"I promised you would have one chance.""
"Please.""
The word shocked Sadie.
Trevor Evans.
Begging.
She almost didn't recognize him.
Chloe grabbed his arm.
"Trevor, what is happening?""
He pulled away.
"Not now.""
"Not now?"" Chloe repeated.
Her voice rose.
"You dragged me into a scene with your ex-wife, and now you're acting like you're the one in trouble?""
Trevor looked at her.
For the first time, Sadie saw doubt between them.
The perfect couple from magazine covers suddenly didn't look perfect.
Damian glanced at the boutique employees.
"Give us privacy.""
Nobody argued.
Within seconds, people began moving away.
The manager quietly guided the remaining customers toward the other side of the store.
Sadie watched Damian.
She still couldn't believe this was real.
This man.
This powerful, terrifying man.
Was her husband.
And yet, there were parts of his life she knew nothing about.
That thought hurt more than she expected.
Because she had trusted him.
Not because of his money.
Not because of his reputation.
Because Damian had been the first person who made her feel safe.
After Trevor left, Damian had found her in a place she never wanted anyone to see.
At her lowest point.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
She remembered that night.
The rain.
The empty diner.
The coffee growing cold between them.
The stranger who sat across from her and asked one simple question.
"Why are you apologizing to someone who isn't here?""
At the time, she didn't understand.
Now she did.
Damian had seen the broken pieces of her.
And he never asked her to hide them.
But maybe she had never seen his.
"Sadie.""
His voice brought her back.
She looked at him.
"What?""
"Are you okay?""
She almost laughed.
The question was so simple.
So normal.
Yet nobody had asked her that in years and actually meant it.
"I don't know.""
Damian's expression softened.
"I should have told you.""
"Yes.""
No hesitation.
The answer surprised both of them.
Sadie looked at him.
"I should not have found out that way.""
"I know.""
"You know Trevor.""
"Yes.""
"You knew he was dangerous?""
Damian paused.
"Yes.""
The honesty hurt.
More than a lie would have.
Sadie stepped back slightly.
"How long?""
Damian didn't answer.
"How long have you known him?""
"A few years.""
Her chest tightened.
"A few years?""
"Sadie—"
"No.""
She shook her head.
"Don't do that.""
"Do what?""
"Use that voice.""
His eyebrows pulled together.
"What voice?""
"The voice you use when you're trying to protect me from something.""
Damian went quiet.
Because she was right.
Sadie looked down.
She hated that she was angry.
Because Damian had never treated her like Trevor did.
He had never insulted her.
Never mocked her.
Never made her feel worthless.
But secrets had weight.
And she was tired of carrying other people's hidden truths.
Trevor suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
It wasn't a happy laugh.
It was desperate.
"You really didn't tell her.""
Damian turned.
"Leave.""
Trevor shook his head.
"No.""
His eyes moved to Sadie.
"You deserve to know.""
Damian's voice became dangerous.
"Trevor.""
But Trevor continued.
"You think he saved you?""
Sadie's face tightened.
"Stop.""
"No, Sadie. You need to hear this.""
Damian stepped forward.
But Sadie lifted her hand.
A small gesture.
One that stopped him.
Because Damian listened to her.
Not because he had to.
Because he chose to.
Trevor noticed.
And something bitter crossed his face.
"That's what makes me angry.""
Sadie frowned.
"What?""
"He actually listens to you.""
The words came out almost like an accusation.
Trevor looked at Damian.
"You know what the difference is?""
Nobody answered.
"You spent years begging me to respect you.""
He looked at Sadie.
"And he gives it to you without being asked.""
Sadie felt something shift.
Because buried beneath Trevor's anger was something uglier.
Regret.
But she wasn't ready to forgive him.
Not today.
Not ever.
"Why did you leave?"" she asked.
Trevor went still.
The question seemed to hit harder than anything else.
"Sadie...""
"No.""
Her voice was calm.
"Three years.""
She looked directly at him.
"Three years I wondered what I did wrong.""
Trevor looked away.
"I was scared.""
The answer surprised her.
"Scared of what?""
"Failing.""
A bitter smile touched his mouth.
"You were the only person who believed in me. And I hated that.""
Sadie stared.
"I hated needing you.""
The confession hung in the air.
Trevor continued.
"So I found people who made me feel powerful.""
"People like Chloe?""
Chloe looked offended.
Trevor didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Sadie felt something cold settle inside her.
Not heartbreak.
Not anymore.
Just understanding.
Trevor hadn't left because she wasn't enough.
He left because he wasn't.
Damian watched her carefully.
Then he reached for her hand.
This time, she let him.
Trevor noticed.
His expression darkened.
"Do you know what everyone says about him?""
Sadie's fingers tightened slightly.
Damian looked at her.
"Don't listen.""
But Trevor smiled.
A dangerous, desperate smile.
"They say Damian Blackwood doesn't love anyone.""
The room went silent.
"They say he doesn't have a heart.""
Damian's face revealed nothing.
Trevor looked at Sadie.
"So tell me something.""
He pointed at the ring.
"Why would a man like that marry you?""
Sadie didn't answer.
Because for the first time...
She wondered the same thing.
And then Damian's phone rang.
One glance at the screen changed his entire expression.
The color drained from his face.
Not fear.
Something worse.
Concern.
He answered.
"Speak.""
A pause.
Everyone watched him listen.
Then his eyes moved to Sadie.
And whatever he heard made his grip tighten around her hand.
"Where?""
Another pause.
Damian's voice became ice.
"Keep her there.""
Sadie felt a chill.
"Damian?""
He ended the call.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he looked at her.
And she knew immediately.
Something had happened.
Something connected to her.
"What is it?""
Damian hesitated.
That scared her more than anything.
Finally, he said:
"Someone broke into our house.""
Sadie's heart stopped.
"What?""
His eyes locked onto hers.
"They weren't looking for money.""
A cold silence followed.
"They were looking for something that belongs to you.""
Sadie's blood ran cold.
"Me?""
Damian's expression hardened.
"No.""
He squeezed her hand.
"They were looking for the truth about who you really are.""
And before Sadie could ask what that meant, Trevor whispered from behind them:
"Oh God.""
Everyone turned.
Trevor looked terrified.
Because he wasn't looking at Damian.
He was looking at Sadie.
And he said the one sentence that changed everything.
"She doesn't know, does she?""
Damian's face went completely still.
"What are you talking about?"" Sadie asked.
Trevor stared at her.
May you like
Then slowly said:
"Sadie... your entire life is a lie.""
