Chapter 7: The Sister Who Knew the Truth

The word stayed between them.

*War.*

Sadie stared at Victoria Blackwood.

The woman standing in the doorway didn't look like someone who had just walked into a family home.

She looked like someone who owned every room she entered.

Her black coat hung perfectly over her shoulders. Her expression was calm, almost bored.

But her eyes were not.

Her eyes were focused entirely on Sadie.

Like she was looking at a problem that had finally appeared.

"Who are you?"" Sadie asked.

Victoria smiled slightly.

"That's an interesting question.""

Damian stepped forward.

"Victoria.""

The warning in his voice was clear.

But his sister ignored it.

"She deserves to know.""

Sadie looked at Damian.

Again.

Another person saying those words.

She deserves to know.

Everyone seemed to believe that.

Everyone except her.

Victoria walked further inside.

"I am Victoria Blackwood.""

She looked at Sadie's wedding ring.

"And I am the person who spent years trying to stop my brother from making the biggest mistake of his life.""

Sadie's expression hardened.

"I'm the mistake?""

"No.""

Victoria's answer was immediate.

"You are the consequence.""

The words cut.

Damian's face changed.

"Enough.""

Victoria looked at him.

"You always do this.""

"Do what?""

"Protect people from reality.""

Damian's voice became colder.

"Leave.""

Victoria laughed softly.

"Still giving orders.""

She stepped closer.

"Still pretending you aren't exactly like him.""

Sadie's eyes moved between them.

"Like who?""

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria said:

"Your father.""

Damian went still.

The atmosphere changed.

Even Sadie felt it.

A wound had just been opened.

"Don't bring him into this.""

Victoria's expression softened slightly.

For the first time, she looked less like an enemy.

More like someone carrying old pain.

"Then stop repeating his mistakes.""

Damian said nothing.

Sadie noticed.

That scared her.

Because Damian always had an answer.

Always.

But when it came to his father...

He became someone else.

"What happened between you two?"" Sadie asked.

Victoria looked at her.

"Your husband has spent his entire life trying to become the opposite of Alexander Blackwood.""

She glanced at Damian.

"But he never realized he inherited the same weakness.""

Sadie frowned.

"What weakness?""

Victoria answered quietly.

"Love.""

The word surprised her.

Victoria continued.

"My father believed love made people weak.""

She looked at Damian.

"My brother believed love made people worth saving.""

A bitter smile crossed her face.

"And both of them were wrong.""

Damian looked away.

Sadie studied him.

There were pieces of his past she had never seen.

The scars beneath the confidence.

The loneliness behind the power.

Victoria moved toward the table and placed a folder down.

"You need to see this.""

Damian didn't touch it.

"No.""

"Yes.""

"I said no.""

Victoria's expression became serious.

"Adrian Moretti knows.""

The room went silent.

Sadie's heart tightened.

"Knows what?""

Victoria looked at her.

"That you are alive.""

Sadie swallowed.

"He's known for years.""

"No.""

Victoria shook her head.

"He knew Isabella had a daughter.""

She looked at Damian.

"But he didn't know where she was.""

A cold feeling moved through Sadie.

"Until now.""

Victoria nodded.

"Until Damian married you.""

Sadie looked at her husband.

Damian looked furious.

"How?""

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"Because someone gave him your name.""

Everyone became silent.

Sadie felt her stomach drop.

"Who?""

Victoria didn't answer immediately.

She looked at Damian.

And that hesitation was enough.

"Who?""

Damian's face tightened.

"Victoria.""

But she continued.

"Someone inside your organization.""

Sadie looked at Damian.

"You have people who work for you?""

He didn't answer.

She almost laughed.

Of course.

Of course there was another layer.

Damian Blackwood wasn't just a powerful businessman.

He was something much bigger.

Something darker.

Victoria opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Records.

Sadie looked down.

The first photograph made her freeze.

It was her.

Years ago.

Working at a small restaurant.

Another photo.

Her leaving the gym where she used to shower after sleeping in her car.

Another.

Her old apartment.

Her entire life.

Watched.

Tracked.

Studied.

Sadie's skin turned cold.

"How long?""

Victoria answered.

"Years.""

She looked at Damian.

"Someone has been watching her since before you met her.""

Sadie turned slowly.

"Did you know?""

Damian's face changed.

"No.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

The answer was firm.

But she saw the pain in his eyes.

He was hurt too.

Victoria looked at the papers.

"Adrian wanted proof.""

"Proof of what?""

"That you were really Isabella's daughter.""

Sadie shook her head.

"But why?""

Victoria looked at her.

"Because if you are the rightful heir...""

She paused.

"...then Adrian loses everything.""

Sadie stared.

"I don't want anything.""

Victoria's expression softened.

"That doesn't matter.""

"What?""

"Power doesn't care whether you want it.""

The words were terrifyingly true.

Sadie looked at Damian.

"I never asked for any of this.""

"I know.""

"Then why is everyone fighting over me?""

Nobody answered.

Because there was no easy answer.

Victoria picked up another document.

"There is one more thing.""

Damian immediately looked at her.

"No.""

Victoria ignored him.

"Sadie needs to know.""

"What?""

Victoria looked at her.

"Your mother didn't just leave you.""

Sadie froze.

"What?""

"She left something behind.""

Damian's face became tense.

"Victoria.""

"No more secrets.""

She placed a small key on the table.

Sadie stared at it.

"What is that?""

"A safety deposit box.""

"Where?""

Victoria looked at Damian.

"Your father kept it.""

Sadie's breath caught.

"My father?""

"Alexander Blackwood.""

Victoria nodded.

"He knew Adrian would come after you.""

She pushed the key closer.

"He prepared for the day you learned the truth.""

Sadie didn't touch it.

"What is inside?""

Victoria looked away.

"I don't know.""

That surprised her.

"You don't know?""

"No one does.""

"Then how do you have the key?""

Victoria's expression changed.

"Because my father gave it to me.""

Damian looked shocked.

"When?""

Victoria met his eyes.

"The night before he died.""

Silence.

Sadie looked at Damian.

He looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

"What did he say?""

Victoria's face became distant.

She remembered.

A moment from years ago.

A final conversation.

"He said...""

Her voice lowered.

"Protect the girl who carries both our names.""

Sadie felt a chill.

"Both our names?""

Victoria looked at her.

"Because Alexander knew something.""

"What?""

"That one day you would have to choose.""

"Choose what?""

Victoria's eyes moved to Damian.

Then back to Sadie.

"Whether to become what your blood demands...""

She paused.

"...or what your heart wants.""

Before Sadie could respond, every light in the mansion suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A second later, alarms screamed.

Damian reacted instantly.

He grabbed Sadie's hand.

"Stay with me.""

The sound of footsteps echoed from somewhere inside the house.

Too many footsteps.

Victoria moved beside them.

"This isn't possible.""

Damian looked at her.

"What?""

Her face had lost its confidence.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

"The security system was disabled from inside.""

Sadie's heart raced.

"Someone broke in?""

Damian's eyes scanned the darkness.

"No.""

A heavy silence.

Then he said:

"Someone let them in.""

A gunshot exploded somewhere downstairs.

Sadie gasped.

Damian pulled her behind him.

Victoria reached for the weapon hidden beneath her coat.

And then a voice came through the mansion speakers.

A voice Sadie had never heard before.

But somehow...

She knew exactly who it belonged to.

"Hello, daughter.""

Everything stopped.

Damian's face turned pale.

Victoria whispered:

"Adrian.""

The voice continued.

"I've waited twenty-six years for this moment.""

Sadie's blood ran cold.

"Come downstairs, Sadie.""

A pause.

Then the voice added:

"Your mother lied to you.""

Another pause.

"And Damian knows why.""

Sadie looked at her husband.

Because for the first time...

She wasn't sure who she was supposed to fear more.

May you like

The father who returned.

Or the husband who stayed silent.
