Chapter 9: The Child They Tried To Erase
For several seconds, nobody understood what they were looking at.
The bracelet sat on the floor.
Small.
White.
Almost weightless.
But the name printed on it carried the weight of years of lies.
*Baby: Vale, Emma Catherine.*
Vincent looked at Isabella.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at the bracelet.
“Who is Emma?””
Nobody answered.
The silence itself became an answer.
Isabella slowly picked up the bracelet.
Her fingers trembled.
“Catherine had a baby?””
Daniel looked away.
“You didn’t know.””
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I didn’t know.””
Vincent stared at him.
“You knew?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not everything.””
“What did you know?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I knew Catherine was pregnant years ago.””
Isabella looked at him.
“When?””
“Before your first pregnancy.””
The room felt smaller.
“You never told me?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I thought it wasn’t my place.””
Vincent’s expression hardened.
“This isn’t about privacy anymore.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
Isabella stared at the bracelet.
“Emma.””
She said the name quietly.
Like she was testing whether it belonged to a real person.
“What happened to her?””
No one answered.
Then Vincent’s phone buzzed.
A new message.
From Catherine.
One sentence.
*Now you understand.*
Vincent immediately called the number.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
*Come alone if you want the truth.*
Isabella saw it.
“No.””
Vincent looked at her.
“She has our daughter.””
“She wants you alone.””
“I’ll be careful.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“She has controlled everything for years. She wants you separated from us.””
Vincent looked at her.
“You’re right.””
He took her hand.
“We go together.””
The location Catherine sent was not her home.
It was an abandoned community center outside the city.
A place Vincent had passed hundreds of times.
A place nobody would notice.
When they arrived, the doors were open.
Inside, the lights flickered.
A baby monitor sat on a table.
The screen showed Bella sleeping.
Isabella immediately rushed forward.
“Where is she?””
A speaker crackled.
Catherine’s voice filled the room.
“Isabella.””
She stopped.
“Show yourself.””
Catherine stepped out from the hallway.
She looked exhausted.
Not like a villain.
Not like someone celebrating victory.
Like someone who had been carrying a terrible decision for too long.
Isabella stared at her.
“You stole my daughter.””
Catherine’s eyes filled with tears.
“I protected her.””
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me where she is.””
Catherine looked at the monitor.
“She’s safe.””
Vincent stepped forward.
“You keep using that word.””
“Because it matters.””
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“Because it makes you feel better.””
Catherine looked at him.
“You think I wanted this?””
“I think you made choices.””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“I did.””
Isabella stared.
“Why?””
Catherine looked at the floor.
“Because I knew what happened before.””
“What happened to my first baby?””
Catherine closed her eyes.
“You weren’t supposed to know.””
“Answer me.””
A long pause.
Then Catherine whispered:
“Your baby was alive.””
The world stopped.
Isabella’s face went completely blank.
“No.””
Catherine looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
Isabella stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
Vincent grabbed her hand.
“Bella.””
“She died.””
Catherine shook her head.
“No.””
Tears ran down her face.
“She was taken.””
Daniel whispered:
“By who?””
Catherine looked toward the doorway.
And everyone knew before she said it.
“Evelyn.””
Isabella’s knees almost gave out.
“No.””
Catherine continued.
“Your mother believed you weren’t strong enough to raise a child.””
“That’s not true.””
“She convinced herself she was saving you.””
“She killed my baby.””
Catherine looked away.
“She made a decision.””
Vincent’s anger exploded.
“A decision?””
He stepped forward.
“She stole a child.””
Catherine looked at him.
“She didn’t want to lose her.””
“What does that mean?””
Catherine took a breath.
“The baby was adopted.””
Isabella stared.
“Without my permission?””
Catherine said nothing.
That was enough.
Five years of grief.
Five years of believing she had failed.
Five years of blaming herself.
All built on a lie.
“Where is she?”” Isabella whispered.
Catherine looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
“I know what happened.””
“But you don’t know where she is?””
Catherine shook her head.
“After Evelyn arranged everything, Dr. Voss handled the records.””
Vincent clenched his fists.
“And Emma?””
Catherine looked at the bracelet.
“That’s the reason.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Catherine turned toward him.
“My daughter was sick.””
The room became silent.
“She was born with a condition.””
Vincent understood.
“They needed a donor.””
Catherine nodded.
“They needed another child.””
Isabella stared.
“No.””
Catherine looked at her.
“Your mother knew.””
The truth landed slowly.
Not a kidnapping.
Not just a custody battle.
Something much bigger.
A plan that had started five years ago.
“They wanted Bella because of Emma,” Vincent said.
Catherine nodded.
“They needed access to medical information.””
“And when Isabella had another child…”
“They started planning.””
Isabella covered her mouth.
“My daughter was never the target.””
“No,” Catherine whispered.
“She was the key.””
The baby monitor suddenly changed.
The image disappeared.
Everyone looked at the screen.
A new video appeared.
Live feed.
A room.
Bella’s room.
And someone standing beside the crib.
Isabella moved closer.
“No.””
The person turned.
Evelyn.
Holding Bella.
“She’s with my mother?”” Daniel whispered.
Catherine shook her head.
“No.””
Her face turned pale.
“Look behind her.””
The camera angle shifted.
A second person entered.
Someone wearing a hospital badge.
Vincent recognized the face immediately.
Dr. Amelia Voss.
But she wasn’t carrying paperwork.
She was carrying a medical case.
Isabella’s voice trembled.
“What are they doing?””
Catherine looked terrified.
“They’re finishing it.””
Vincent turned.
“Finishing what?””
Catherine looked at Isabella.
“The same thing they started five years ago.””
The feed continued.
Amelia placed the case on a table.
Evelyn looked toward the camera.
And spoke.
Not to Amelia.
Not to Bella.
To them.
“I know you’re watching.””
Vincent froze.
Evelyn smiled.
“You finally found the truth.””
Isabella stepped toward the screen.
“Mom.””
Evelyn looked at her daughter.
“You always were more stubborn than I expected.””
“Give me my baby.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I’m trying to save her.””
“You said that before.””
“This time you’ll understand.””
Amelia opened the medical case.
Inside were documents.
And something else.
A small vial.
Vincent’s face changed.
“What is that?””
Catherine whispered:
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
She backed away.
“That’s not possible.””
“What is it?”” Isabella demanded.
Catherine looked at the screen.
At the baby.
At the vial.
Then at Isabella.
“It’s the reason they needed Bella.””
A terrible silence followed.
“Tell me.””
Catherine’s voice broke.
“They’re not trying to take your daughter.””
She looked horrified.
“They’re trying to use her.””
Isabella grabbed Vincent’s hand.
“What does that mean?””
The screen suddenly went black.
The final image remained frozen.
Evelyn standing beside Bella.
Amelia holding the case.
Then a message appeared.
*TRANSFER BEGINS IN 10 MINUTES.*
Vincent stared.
“Transfer?””
Nobody answered.
Then Catherine whispered the truth.
The truth that explained every lie.
Every document.
Every betrayal.
“They don’t need custody.””
She looked at Isabella.
“They need access to her DNA.””

And somewhere in the darkness, a countdown began.
*09:59.*
