Chapter 6: The Woman Behind The Curtain

The picture stayed on Vincent’s phone for exactly twelve seconds.

Twelve seconds of silence.

Twelve seconds of staring at his newborn daughter sleeping in someone else’s arms.

Twelve seconds of Isabella trying not to collapse.

Then the image disappeared.

Deleted.

The message vanished.

The number became unavailable.

Whoever sent it wanted them to know one thing.

They had access.

They were close.

And they were watching.

Vincent looked at Daniel.

“Where is she?””

Daniel’s face was pale.

“I don’t know the exact location.””

Vincent stepped forward.

“You just said you knew where she was taken.””

“I know where they planned to take her.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

Daniel looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Isabella walked toward him.

For the first time, her anger was stronger than her pain.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Daniel looked at his sister.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice shook.

“You stood there while they carried my baby into our house.””

“I was trying to stop it.””

“You watched them use my signature.””

“I know.””

“You watched them make me look like a bad mother.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

She slapped him.

The sound echoed through the quiet street.

Vincent didn’t move.

Neither did Daniel.

Because both of them knew he deserved the pain behind that moment.

Isabella’s hand trembled.

“I trusted you.””

Daniel whispered:

“I know.””

“That’s the worst part.””

Her tears fell.

“Not my mother.””

“Not some stranger.””

“You.””

Daniel looked broken.

“I never wanted this.””

“Then why?””

He had no answer.

And somehow, that hurt more.

Finally, Daniel reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out a small key.

“My mother’s office.””

Isabella frowned.

“What?””

“The private office in her house.””

“You’ve never had access.””

Daniel nodded.

“I did.””

Vincent looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I knew something was wrong.””

“When?””

Daniel looked toward the ground.

“The day Isabella gave birth.””

The words made Isabella freeze.

“What happened that day?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I saw Mom talking to Dr. Voss.””

“So?””

“They weren’t talking like family.””

He looked at Isabella.

“They were talking like business partners.””

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“What did they say?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I heard Mom say, ‘After today, Isabella won’t have any legal claim.’”

Isabella covered her mouth.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“And Dr. Voss said, ‘Then we finally finish what we started.’”

The street seemed to go silent.

Vincent looked at the flash drive in his hand.

“What’s in here?””

“Everything I found.””

“Why didn’t you go to the police?””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You think I didn’t try?””

He looked at Isabella.

“Mom had already prepared for that.””

“How?””

“She had recordings.””

“Of what?””

“Of Isabella.””

The answer made her go still.

“Me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Private conversations.””

Vincent frowned.

“She recorded her?””

“Yes.””

“For what purpose?””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“To prove Isabella was unstable.””

Isabella looked away.

The realization hurt.

Her mother hadn’t just been attacking her.

She had been collecting weapons.

Every tear.

Every moment of fear.

Every honest confession from a struggling new mother.

Turned into evidence against her.

Vincent opened his car door.

“We’re going to Evelyn’s house.””

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“You can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because she knows you’re coming.””

“Good.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became urgent.

“You don’t understand. My mother doesn’t panic.””

He looked toward the road.

“She prepares.””

Vincent stared at him.

“Then we prepare too.””

Two hours later, they arrived at the Hart estate.

It was larger than Vincent remembered.

A massive stone house surrounded by perfect gardens.

The kind of place where everything looked beautiful from the outside.

And rotten underneath.

The front door opened before they knocked.

Evelyn stood there.

Not surprised.

Not afraid.

Almost amused.

“I wondered how long it would take.””

Isabella stared at her.

“Where is my daughter?””

Evelyn looked at Vincent.

Then Daniel.

Her expression changed when she saw her son.

“You betrayed me.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You were always the weakest one.””

Isabella stepped forward.

“Where is Bella?””

Evelyn sighed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That I’m trying to protect her.””

Vincent laughed.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“You kidnapped her.””

“I removed her from danger.””

Isabella’s face hardened.

“I am not dangerous.””

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

And for a moment, there was something almost like sadness.

“You still believe that.””

Vincent felt anger rising.

“What happened five years ago?””

Evelyn went completely still.

Daniel looked at her.

“Tell them.””

She stared at him.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

Evelyn stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The house was silent.

Too silent.

No staff.

No security.

No signs of life.

Except for one room.

The office.

Evelyn unlocked the door.

Inside were shelves of files.

Hundreds.

Vincent looked around.

“What is this?””

“Records.””

“Of what?””

“People.””

Isabella’s face changed.

Her mother had been documenting lives.

Not memories.

Evidence.

Evelyn walked to a cabinet.

“You think I’m cruel.””

She removed a folder.

“You think I wanted this.””

She placed it on the desk.

“Open it.””

Isabella hesitated.

Then she did.

Inside were medical records.

Her medical records.

Pregnancy documents.

Hospital reports.

Psychological evaluations.

All from five years ago.

Vincent picked one up.

The date was the day Isabella lost her first child.

He read the report.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Isabella asked.

He handed it to her.

She read.

Her hands began shaking.

“This isn’t real.””

“What does it say?”” Vincent asked.

She couldn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“It says Isabella refused emergency intervention.””

Vincent looked shocked.

“She didn’t.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“She didn’t.””

Isabella looked at Evelyn.

“You changed it.””

Evelyn didn’t deny it.

“I corrected it.””

Vincent stared.

“You falsified medical records?””

Evelyn’s face remained calm.

“Because I had to.””

“Why?””

“Because nobody would believe me otherwise.””

Isabella stepped back.

“Believe what?””

Evelyn looked directly at her.

“That you were not ready to be a mother.””

The room became ice cold.

Vincent moved between them.

“You spent five years building this lie.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“It wasn’t a lie.””

She opened another folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A newborn baby.

But not Bella.

Vincent looked confused.

“What is that?””

Evelyn’s voice lowered.

“The truth.””

Isabella stared at the picture.

Then slowly recognized something.

The hospital bracelet.

The blanket.

The room.

“This…”

Her breathing became uneven.

“This is from the night I lost my baby.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why do you have this?””

No answer.

“Why do you have a picture of my dead child?””

Evelyn looked away.

And for the first time, she seemed afraid.

Before she could speak, the office lights suddenly turned off.

The security system alarm began screaming.

Everyone froze.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A voice Vincent recognized.

Dr. Amelia Voss.

“Evelyn.””

The doctor stepped into the doorway.

Her expression was cold.

“You should have destroyed those files.””

Evelyn turned.

“You don’t control me.””

Amelia smiled.

“I already did.””

Daniel moved toward her.

“What are you doing here?””

Amelia looked at him.

“You always were the easiest one to manipulate.””

Vincent stared.

“You.””

Amelia ignored him.

She looked at Isabella.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Isabella’s eyes burned.

“Where is my daughter?””

Amelia smiled.

“Safe.””

“Where?””

The doctor tilted her head.

“Exactly where she was always meant to be.””

Vincent stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Amelia reached into her bag.

She pulled out a document.

Not a hospital form.

Not a legal paper.

Something older.

Something yellowed.

She placed it on the desk.

Isabella looked down.

And the moment she saw the handwriting, she stopped breathing.

Because it was her handwriting.

From five years ago.

A letter she had written the night she lost her first child.

A letter nobody should have had.

Except one person.

The person who had been beside her that night.

Amelia whispered:

“Ask your husband why he never told you what he found.””

Vincent turned.

“What?””

Isabella looked at him.

Confused.

Terrified.

“Vincent?””

He stared at the letter.

Because he knew exactly what Amelia meant.

Five years ago, before he met Isabella, he had received a mysterious package.

A package containing information about her past.

A package he never opened.

Because he thought it was a mistake.

But now he realized something.

Someone had tried to tell him the truth years ago.

And he had ignored it.

Amelia smiled.

“Your daughter wasn’t taken today.””

She looked at Isabella.

“She was taken five years ago.””

The room went silent.

Then Isabella whispered:

“What did you do, Vincent?””
