Chapter 2: The Person In The Doorway
Vincent watched the frozen image on his laptop screen for nearly a minute before he realized he had stopped breathing.
The nursery camera showed the person standing in the doorway.
The person holding the original hospital paperwork.
The person who had looked directly into the camera and said those terrifying words.
“She already signed the surrender.””
Vincent knew that voice.
He knew it because it had comforted him in the hospital hallway three days earlier.
It had told him everything would be okay.
It had held Isabella’s hand while she cried after giving birth.
It belonged to Daniel Hart.
Isabella’s older brother.
Her only sibling.
The man she had trusted since childhood.
“No,” Vincent whispered.
Behind him, Isabella stepped closer.
“What?””
Vincent didn’t answer.
His eyes remained locked on the screen.
The video continued playing.
Daniel walked into the nursery carrying a brown leather folder. He looked around carefully, checking the corners of the room before placing the papers on the rocking chair.
Then he looked at the woman holding the baby.
“Are you sure this is the last time?”” Daniel asked.
The woman nodded.
“She won’t remember anything.””
Vincent’s hands tightened into fists.
The woman’s voice was unfamiliar.
But Daniel’s voice was enough.
Isabella covered her mouth.
“No…”
Vincent turned toward her.
“Isabella.””
She looked like the floor had disappeared beneath her.
“My brother,” she whispered.
The words came out like they hurt.
“My brother did this?””
Vincent closed the laptop.
He couldn’t let her see more.
Not yet.
Not while she was already shaking.
But Isabella reached for the computer.
“No. Open it.””
“Bella—”
“I need to see.””
Her voice cracked.
“I need to know what he did.””
Vincent looked at her bruised face.
At the woman he had promised to protect.
Then he opened the video again.
The recording continued.
Daniel walked toward the crib.
The baby stirred beneath the cream blanket.
Daniel froze.
For a moment, the anger disappeared from his face.
He looked almost human.
Almost guilty.
“I don’t understand why you’re doing this,” Daniel said.
The woman holding the baby smiled.
“Because your sister made a mistake.””
“She loves that child.””
“She loves the idea of being a mother,” the woman replied.
“There’s a difference.””
Vincent felt Isabella move beside him.
“That’s not true,” she whispered.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“We should leave.””
The woman laughed softly.
“You always were weak, Daniel.””
The screen blurred for a second.
Then the woman adjusted the baby blanket.
A tiny hospital tag became visible.
Vincent leaned closer.
The name printed on it was clear.
ISABELLA MORETTI.
Their daughter.
Their child.
Being carried around by a stranger inside their home.
Daniel looked toward the camera.
Then he walked closer.
The recording zoomed in.
His face filled the screen.
“She already signed the surrender,” Daniel said again.
This time, Vincent noticed something.
Daniel wasn’t speaking to the woman.
He was speaking to someone else.
Someone on a phone.
“Tell her it’s done,” Daniel said.
“The paperwork is in place.””
A voice came through the speaker.
A woman’s voice.
“Good. By the time Vincent understands what happened, it will be too late.””
The video ended.
The room became silent.
Not peaceful silence.
The kind of silence that came after something broke.
Isabella slowly sat on the edge of the bed.
“My own brother.””
Vincent knelt in front of her.
“Look at me.””
She didn’t.
“He knew,” she said.
“He knew I was scared. He knew I was exhausted. He knew I trusted him.””
Vincent grabbed her hands.
“We’ll find out what happened.””
She finally looked at him.
“What if he took her?””
The question destroyed him.
Because for the first time since becoming a father, Vincent allowed himself to think about the possibility.
Someone had entered their home.
Someone had carried their newborn child upstairs.
Someone had prepared documents claiming they had permission.
And someone had convinced Isabella’s own family to help.
His phone rang.
Both of them jumped.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Vincent answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Moretti?””
“Yes.””
“This is Detective Laura Bennett with the family crimes division.””
Vincent looked at Isabella.
“How did you get my number?””
“There was an emergency call placed from your address earlier today.””
Vincent frowned.
“I didn’t call.””
“I know.””
The detective paused.
“That’s why I’m calling.””
The room felt colder.
“What do you mean?””
“We received a report claiming Isabella Moretti voluntarily surrendered custody of her newborn daughter.””
Isabella closed her eyes.
“No…”
Vincent stood.
“That report is false.””
“Mr. Moretti, I need you to listen carefully.””
Her tone changed.
Professional.
Serious.
“We have a hospital document showing your wife’s signature.””
“It’s fake.””
“You’re certain?””
“Yes.””
Another pause.
“Then you need to come to the station immediately.””
“Why?””
“Because the original hospital file has been flagged.””
Vincent looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone accessed your daughter’s birth records before they were officially released.””
Isabella stood.
“Who?””
The detective heard her.
“Mrs. Moretti?””
“Yes.””
“I need you to prepare yourself.””
“For what?””
The detective lowered her voice.
“The person who accessed the file was someone listed as an emergency contact.””
Vincent felt Isabella’s fingers go numb inside his hand.
“Who?””
The detective answered.
“Evelyn Hart.””
Isabella stared at the floor.
Her mother.
The woman who had helped decorate the nursery.
The woman who had cried when she first held her granddaughter.
The woman who now claimed she was protecting the baby.
Vincent felt anger rising inside him.
But before he could speak, Detective Bennett continued.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
“We found a second document.””
“What kind of document?””
“A hospital discharge form.””
Vincent frowned.
“My daughter was discharged with Isabella and me.””
“No.””
The detective’s voice was careful.
“That’s what you were told.””
A terrible feeling moved through Vincent’s chest.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying the official hospital records show another person signed for your daughter’s release.””
Isabella grabbed the phone.
“Who signed it?””
There was a pause.
Then Detective Bennett said:
“Your mother.””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Isabella dropped the phone.
“No.””
Vincent caught it before it fell.
“My wife was the one discharged.””
“That’s what you believe,” the detective replied.
“But the hospital system shows Evelyn Hart removed one page from the discharge packet and replaced it with another.””
Vincent looked at Isabella.
She was crying silently now.
Not from fear.
From betrayal.
“Why would she do this?”” Isabella whispered.
No one answered.
Because maybe the answer was worse than they imagined.
Maybe this was never about helping.
Maybe this was planned from the beginning.
Vincent ended the call and immediately grabbed his keys.
“We’re going to the hospital.””
Isabella didn’t move.
“Vincent…”
He turned.
“What?””
She looked toward the nursery door.
Her voice became barely audible.
“There’s something I never told you.””
A chill ran through him.
“What?””
She wiped her tears.
“The night before I gave birth…”
She swallowed.
“My mother came into my room.””
Vincent waited.
“She told me something strange.””
“What did she say?””
Isabella looked terrified.
“She said if I didn’t cooperate, she would make sure nobody believed me.””
Vincent’s expression changed.
“Cooperate with what?””
Isabella shook her head.
“I didn’t know.””
Then her eyes moved toward the hallway.
Toward the room where their daughter’s things were still waiting.
“I thought she was just trying to scare me.””
Vincent followed her gaze.
“But she wasn’t.””
“No.””
Isabella’s voice broke.
“She was warning me.””
At that moment, Vincent’s phone received a message.
A video file.
No number.
No name.
Just one sentence.
*You should have listened to Evelyn.*
Vincent opened it.
The video showed the hospital hallway from three days earlier.
The day Isabella gave birth.
The camera angle was from a security feed.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then Isabella walked out of the delivery room.
Exhausted.
Holding their newborn daughter.
A nurse stood beside her.
Evelyn stood behind them.
And then someone else entered the frame.
Someone Vincent had not expected.
Someone who had been there from the very beginning.
The person leaned close to Evelyn and handed her a folder.
Evelyn opened it.
Inside was the same surrender document.
The same fake signature.
The same paperwork that was now destroying their family.
Vincent froze.
Because the camera captured the person’s face clearly.
And he finally understood.
Daniel Hart had not started this.
He had only followed orders.
The person who created the entire plan was standing right beside Evelyn in the hospital hallway.
And Isabella recognized that person too.
Her face turned completely pale.
“Vincent…”
Her voice trembled.
“That’s not possible.””
“Who is it?””
She stared at the screen.
The person who had helped bring their daughter into the world.
The person who had promised to protect her.
The person who had been trusted by everyone.
“It’s…”
The video suddenly cut off.
And the last frame showed a single name written on the folder.
May you like
A name Vincent had never expected to see.
*Dr. Amelia Voss.*
