Chapter 7: The Letter He Never Opened
Vincent had faced angry men.
He had faced business rivals who tried to destroy his company.
He had faced impossible situations where one decision could cost millions of dollars.
But nothing prepared him for the way Isabella looked at him.
Not with hatred.
Not yet.
With confusion.
With fear.
Like she was looking at a stranger wearing her husband’s face.
“What did she mean?”” Isabella whispered.
Vincent opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because the truth was buried so deeply that he had almost convinced himself it never happened.
Five years ago.
Before Isabella.
Before the wedding.
Before the house.
Before Bella.
There had been a package.
A plain brown envelope.
No return address.
No explanation.
Just his name written across the front.
VINCENT MORETTI.
Inside had been photographs.
Medical records.
And a letter.
A letter from someone claiming to know the truth about Isabella’s first pregnancy.
He remembered holding it.
Remembered the strange feeling in his chest.
Remembered thinking someone was trying to ruin the life of a woman he had only recently started dating.
So he put it away.
He never opened it.
Not fully.
Not until now.
“I didn’t know,” Vincent said.
Isabella stared.
“You didn’t know what?””
“That someone was trying to tell me.””
Her expression hardened.
“Tell you what?””
Amelia watched them silently.
Almost enjoying the moment.
Vincent looked at the doctor.
“You sent it.””
She smiled slightly.
“I didn’t say that.””
“But you know about it.””
“I know many things.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stop playing games.””
Amelia looked at him.
“You’re still trying to be brave?””
Daniel clenched his fists.
“You ruined my sister’s life.””
“No.””
Amelia shook her head.
“Your sister ruined her own life.””
Isabella flinched.
Vincent moved immediately.
“Don’t talk to her like that.””
Amelia looked at him.
“You don’t even know the woman you married.””
The words hit harder because they came from someone who knew exactly where to strike.
Vincent stepped forward.
“You’re done.””
“Am I?””
Amelia pointed toward the letter on the desk.
“Open it.””
Everyone looked at the paper.
Isabella reached for it.
But Vincent stopped her.
“Wait.””
She looked at him.
“Why?””
Because he was afraid.
Not of the letter.
Of what it might reveal.
For years, Vincent had believed he had built his marriage on trust.
But now he wondered if there had always been a door in Isabella’s past that nobody wanted him to open.
Slowly, he picked up the letter.
The paper was old.
The edges were worn.
He unfolded it.
The handwriting was familiar.
Not because he had seen it before.
Because it was Isabella’s.
His eyes moved across the page.
I don’t know if anyone will believe me.
They keep telling me I imagined things.
They keep telling me it was my fault.
Vincent’s breathing changed.
He continued.
But I know someone changed the records.
I know someone made a decision for my baby without asking me.
His hands started shaking.
Isabella whispered:
“What does it say?””
Vincent looked at her.
“It’s from you.””
She froze.
“What?””
“It’s a letter you wrote.””
“I never wrote a letter.””
Amelia smiled.
“Yes, you did.””
Isabella looked at her.
“When?””
The doctor walked closer.
“The night you lost your first child.””
Isabella shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Amelia’s voice remained calm.
“You wrote everything down because you were afraid you would forget.””
Vincent continued reading.
If something happens to me, if they say I wasn’t responsible, don’t believe them.
I wanted my baby.
I loved my baby.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Isabella covered her mouth.
“I wrote that?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“Bella…”
She looked at him.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked away.
That answer was enough.
“You knew.””
“I found it after.””
“After what?””
Daniel swallowed.
“After Mom took you home from the hospital.””
The room became silent.
Isabella stepped back.
“My mother had my letter?””
Daniel nodded.
“She kept everything.””
Vincent looked at Evelyn.
“You knew.””
Evelyn didn’t speak.
“You knew your daughter was telling the truth.””
Evelyn’s expression remained cold.
“I knew she was confused.””
“No.””
Vincent’s voice sharpened.
“You knew.””
For the first time, Evelyn looked uncomfortable.
Amelia interrupted.
“You’re wasting time.””
Everyone turned.
The doctor looked at Vincent.
“You want your daughter back.””
Isabella stepped forward.
“Where is she?””
Amelia smiled.
“Come with me.””
“No.””
Vincent’s answer was immediate.
“You’re not taking us anywhere.””
Amelia sighed.
“I expected more gratitude.””
“Gratitude?””
“For saving your family.””
Isabella’s face twisted.
“You stole my child.””
Amelia looked at her.
“I saved her from repeating history.””
“What history?””
Amelia glanced at Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Then finally Vincent.
“Your family has spent years hiding the same truth.””
She pointed at the letter.
“The first baby.””
She paused.
“Was not lost because of an accident.””
Nobody moved.
Isabella whispered:
“What are you saying?””
Amelia walked toward the window.
“Your daughter survived because of a choice someone made.””
Vincent frowned.
“Survived?””
The doctor looked back.
“Yes.””
Isabella’s face drained.
“No.””
Amelia said nothing.
But that silence was enough.
Vincent looked at Isabella.
“What does she mean?””
Isabella shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Amelia reached into her bag again.
This time, she removed a photograph.
She placed it beside the letter.
It was an ultrasound image.
The date was five years ago.
Vincent stared.
“What is this?””
Amelia answered:
“The pregnancy everyone told Isabella she lost.””
Isabella looked at it.
Her hands went to her mouth.
“No…”
“There was a complication,” Amelia said.
“A decision was made.””
Vincent’s voice became cold.
“By who?””
Amelia looked directly at Evelyn.
The older woman said nothing.
And that was the answer.
Vincent turned toward her.
“You.””
Evelyn’s face tightened.
“I did what was necessary.””
Isabella looked horrified.
“What did you do?””
Evelyn finally spoke.
“I protected you.””
“No.””
Isabella shook her head.
“You protected yourself.””
Evelyn’s eyes flashed.
“You were falling apart.””
“I was grieving.””
“You were weak.””
“I was your daughter.””
The words hit Evelyn harder than anything else.
For a moment, the mother mask disappeared.
Only a woman who had lost control remained.
Then the alarm stopped.
Everyone froze.
A notification appeared on Amelia’s phone.
She looked at it.
And for the first time, her confidence vanished.
“What?””
Vincent noticed.
“What happened?””
Amelia read the message again.
Her face changed.
Someone had done something she didn’t expect.
Daniel looked at her.
“Who messaged you?””
She didn’t answer.
Vincent stepped closer.
“Who?””
Amelia slowly turned the phone around.
The message was short.
*THE BABY HAS BEEN MOVED.*
Below it was a location.
And a name.
The name of the person who had Bella.
Isabella grabbed Vincent’s arm.
“Who?””
Vincent looked at the screen.
Then he stopped.
Because the name wasn’t Evelyn.
It wasn’t Amelia.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It was someone nobody had suspected.
Someone who had been missing since the day Bella was taken.
Someone who had disappeared before anyone realized there was a second plan.
The message showed:
*CATHERINE VALE.*
Isabella went completely still.
“No.””
Vincent looked at her.
“Who is she?””
Her face turned pale.
“She was my best friend.””
The room fell silent.
May you like
And then Isabella whispered the truth that changed everything.
“She was the only person I trusted enough to name as Bella’s emergency guardian.””
