Chapter 3: The Doctor Who Held The Secret
Dr. Amelia Voss had been the person Vincent thanked before anyone else.
Before he thanked the nurses.
Before he called his family.
Before he even held his daughter for the first time.
She was the doctor who had delivered their baby.
The woman who had stood beside Isabella through fourteen hours of labor.
The woman who had looked Vincent in the eyes and said, “Your wife was incredibly brave.””
Now her name was written on the folder that contained the document used to steal their child.
Vincent stared at the frozen image on his phone.
“No.””
Isabella sat on the edge of the bed, her hands shaking.
“I trusted her.””
The pain in her voice was worse than anger.
It was betrayal.
“She was there when I was scared,” Isabella whispered.
“She held my hand when I thought something was wrong. She told me my baby was safe.””
Vincent looked at the screen again.
The image was blurry, but the person beside Evelyn was unmistakable.
Dr. Amelia Voss.
The same doctor whose photograph hung on the hospital’s maternity ward wall.
The same doctor who had appeared in countless interviews about safe childbirth.
The same doctor Isabella had called “the only person who understood.””
Vincent grabbed his jacket.
“We’re going to the hospital.””
Isabella stood immediately.
“No.””
He stopped.
She looked toward the nursery.
“We’re going to get our daughter first.””
The words were quiet.
But there was something different in them.
The fear was still there.
The pain was still there.
But underneath it was a mother’s determination.
Vincent nodded.
“Then we do it together.””
Twenty minutes later, their car sped through the city streets.
Neither of them spoke.
The silence between them was filled with everything they were afraid to say.
What if their daughter had been taken away?
What if the documents were accepted?
What if everyone believed Evelyn’s story?
When they arrived at Moretti Medical Center, Vincent noticed something immediately.
A security guard was standing outside the maternity records department.
Not one.
Two.
He looked at Isabella.
“Why would they need security?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
They walked inside.
The receptionist looked up.
Then immediately looked away.
Vincent noticed.
So did Isabella.
“Excuse me,” Vincent said.
The receptionist forced a smile.
“Yes?””
“We need access to my daughter’s birth records.””
The woman hesitated.
“What is the child’s name?””
“Bella Moretti.””
The receptionist typed.
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“Sir, those records are restricted.””
Vincent leaned forward.
“I’m her father.””
The woman looked uncomfortable.
“I understand, but there has been a legal request.””
“What legal request?””
Before she could answer, a voice came from behind them.
“Vincent.””
They turned.
Dr. Amelia Voss stood there.
Perfectly dressed.
Calm.
Controlled.
Exactly as she had looked three days earlier when she placed their newborn daughter in Isabella’s arms.
But now Vincent saw something different.
Not warmth.
Calculation.
“Doctor,” Isabella said.
Her voice was cold.
Amelia looked between them.
“I heard there was some confusion.””
Vincent almost laughed.
“Confusion?””
Amelia stepped closer.
“Your family is under a lot of stress. New parents often struggle emotionally.””
Isabella stared at her.
“You helped my mother.””
The doctor’s expression didn’t change.
“That’s a serious accusation.””
“It’s true.””
“Isabella, you need to think carefully before making statements you can’t prove.””
Vincent stepped forward.
“We have proof.””
For the first time, Amelia’s eyes changed.
Only for a second.
But Vincent saw it.
She was worried.
“What proof?”” she asked.
He held up his phone.
“The security footage from the hospital.””
The doctor went silent.
Then she smiled.
A small, controlled smile.
“You mean the footage you weren’t supposed to have?””
Vincent’s stomach tightened.
“What?””
Amelia looked at Isabella.
“I’m sorry you’re going through this.””
Then she turned away.
“Your daughter is safe.””
Isabella grabbed her arm.
“Where is she?””
Amelia looked down at her hand.
Slowly, she removed it.
“You should ask your mother.””
The answer shocked both of them.
“Why?””
Amelia didn’t reply.
She simply walked away.
Vincent watched her disappear down the hallway.
“She knows where our daughter is.””
Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then we find out why.””
Before they could follow, a man in a dark suit approached them.
“Mr. and Mrs. Moretti?””
Vincent turned.
“Yes?””
“I’m attorney Richard Hale.””
He handed Vincent a business card.
“I represent Evelyn Hart.””
Isabella stepped back.
“Of course you do.””
The lawyer ignored the comment.
“My client wants to avoid unnecessary damage.””
Vincent stared at him.
“Damage?””
“Public accusations. Legal disputes. Family conflict.””
“You mean exposing what she did?””
The lawyer’s expression remained neutral.
“My client maintains that Isabella willingly transferred temporary guardianship.””
“She didn’t.””
“That can be determined in court.””
Isabella looked at him.
“You’re defending someone who attacked me.””
The lawyer paused.
“Mrs. Moretti, I am aware of the allegations.””
“Then you know she hurt me.””
“I know what has been alleged.””
Vincent clenched his jaw.
“What does Evelyn want?””
The lawyer opened his briefcase.
“She wants an agreement.””
“What kind of agreement?””
“One where you and Isabella stop pursuing this matter.””
Vincent laughed bitterly.
“You think we’ll just walk away?””
The lawyer looked directly at him.
“No.””
He placed a document on the table.
“I think you’ll understand once you see what happens if this becomes public.””
Isabella picked up the paper.
Her face changed.
“What is this?””
Vincent looked over her shoulder.
It was a medical evaluation.
About Isabella.
The date was one day before she gave birth.
The report claimed she had shown signs of emotional instability.
It claimed she was unable to make responsible decisions.
And at the bottom was a signature.
Dr. Amelia Voss.
Vincent felt sick.
“She fabricated this.””
The lawyer shook his head.
“I’m only telling you what exists.””
Isabella stared at the paper.
“She knew.””
Vincent looked at her.
“What?””
“She knew they were going to do this.””
The hallway suddenly felt too bright.
Too public.
Too exposed.
Because they realized something terrifying.
This wasn’t an argument that happened after the baby was born.
This had been prepared before.
Someone had been building a case against Isabella while she was still pregnant.
A case designed to make her look like a mother who couldn’t be trusted.
Vincent turned toward the lawyer.
“Where is my daughter?””
The lawyer gathered his papers.
“I don’t know.””
“You represent Evelyn.””
“I represent her legal interests.””
“You expect me to believe you don’t know?””
The lawyer said nothing.
Then his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
Something changed.
Fear.
Just like Vincent had seen on Evelyn’s face.
The lawyer stepped away to answer.
But Vincent heard enough.
“Mrs. Hart, they’re here.””
A pause.
Then:
“No, I understand.””
Another pause.
Then the lawyer looked directly at Vincent.
“They found the backup.””
Vincent froze.
The lawyer ended the call.
Isabella whispered:
“What backup?””
Nobody answered.
Because the lawyer had already turned pale.
And Vincent realized something.
The people who stole their daughter were not afraid of being exposed.
They were afraid of what the hidden evidence would reveal.
“What backup?”” Vincent demanded.
The lawyer looked at him.
Then slowly said:
“The original recording from the nursery camera.””
Vincent’s heart stopped.
“The one we watched?””
The lawyer shook his head.
“No.””
His voice dropped.
“The one you haven’t seen yet.””
A security alarm suddenly sounded through the hospital.
People started moving.
Nurses rushed down the hallway.
A monitor near the records department flashed red.
SYSTEM ACCESS BREACH.
Isabella grabbed Vincent’s hand.
“Someone is deleting something.””
They ran toward the records room.
The door was open.
Inside, a hospital technician sat frozen at a computer.
The screen showed a file transfer.
Uploading.
Vincent pushed past him.
“What are you doing?””
The technician looked terrified.
“I’m not doing this.””
“Then who is?””
The technician pointed at the screen.
A single username appeared.
AMELIA.VOSS.ADMIN.
Vincent stared.
The transfer continued.
87%.
88%.
89%.
Someone was remotely sending the original hospital records somewhere else.
Then the screen changed.
A final file appeared.
Not a document.
Not a report.
A video.
Created the night Isabella gave birth.
The title made Vincent’s blood run cold.
*THE REAL DISCHARGE AGREEMENT.*
The upload reached 100%.
Then the file disappeared.
But before it vanished, one frame appeared.
A woman’s face.
Standing beside Isabella’s hospital bed.
Holding the original paperwork.
And smiling.
It wasn’t Evelyn.
It wasn’t Amelia.
It was someone Vincent knew even better.
Someone who had been in their home.
Someone who had kissed their newborn daughter’s forehead.
And someone Isabella had trusted with her life.
May you like
Isabella whispered the name.
“Daniel…”
