Chapter 9: The Confession That Was Never Hers
Daniel stared at the document in his hands.
The title alone made his stomach turn.
*Confession of Murder.*
Below it was a signature.
His mother’s signature.
Elizabeth Vance.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The forest outside the cabin was silent.
Too silent.
Daniel looked at his mother.
Then at the paper.
Then back at Victor.
“What is this?””
Victor remained calm.
“The truth.””
Daniel’s grip tightened.
“My mother didn’t kill anyone.””
Victor gave a small smile.
“That’s what she wants you to believe.””
Elizabeth stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
Victor looked at her.
“Still pretending?””
Her expression hardened.
“You know what happened.””
“Yes.””
Victor looked around the cabin.
“I know everything.””
Thomas stepped between them.
“You forged that document.””
Victor laughed.
“Did I?””
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas’s face changed.
A memory had returned.
A painful one.
“Richard had documents like this.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
Thomas stared at the paper.
“Your father collected evidence against everyone involved.””
Victor smiled.
“Exactly.””
He pointed at Daniel.
“Your father was obsessed with protecting the truth.””
A pause.
“Even when the truth destroyed his own family.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Mom.””
Elizabeth’s eyes filled with tears.
“I never signed that.””
Victor shook his head.
“Of course you did.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You changed it.””
The cabin became silent.
Daniel looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Elizabeth walked toward the table.
She placed her hand on the document.
“This is real.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Victor smiled.
Elizabeth looked at her son.
“But it isn’t what he says it is.””
She pointed at the signature.
“I signed a confession.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Mom…”
“I signed one because Victor forced me.””
The words hit harder than anything before.
Victor’s expression remained calm.
“Careful, Elizabeth.””
She ignored him.
“Fifteen years ago, Victor told me he had evidence against me.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Evidence of what?””
Elizabeth looked down.
“Of the accident.””
The room went quiet.
Thomas looked at her.
“What accident?””
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
“The night Richard died.””
Daniel felt his heart sink.
His father.
The accident.
The lie that started everything.
“Tell me.””
Elizabeth looked at him.
“The night your father died, I was with him.””
Daniel stared.
“But everyone said you weren’t.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because Victor changed the story.””
Victor stepped forward.
“Because she was responsible.””
Elizabeth turned toward him.
“You know that isn’t true.””
Daniel looked at Victor.
“What happened?””
Victor smiled slightly.
“Ask your mother.””
Elizabeth looked away.
And Daniel noticed.
The hesitation.
The pain.
The fear.
“Mom.””
She took a breath.
“Your father found out about Victor’s crimes.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“The money.””
“Yes.””
“And Eleanor?””
“She was involved.””
Victor laughed.
“She was always involved.””
Elizabeth continued.
“Your father planned to expose both of them.””
Daniel looked at the confession.
“And then?””
Elizabeth’s voice became quiet.
“Then there was a confrontation.””
Fifteen years earlier.
Richard Vance stood inside the mansion office.
The documents were spread across the desk.
Bank transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Names.
Dates.
Everything Victor had tried to hide.
“You betrayed me.””
Victor stood across from him.
“I did what I had to do.””
“You stole from your own family.””
Victor laughed.
“Family is just another word people use before they take what they want.””
Richard looked disgusted.
“You sound like Eleanor.””
Victor smiled.
“She learned from the best.””
Richard reached for his phone.
Victor stopped him.
“Don’t.””
Richard stared.
“You think I’m afraid of you?””
“No.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“I think you’re afraid of what happens to Daniel if the truth comes out.””
Richard froze.
Because that was exactly what Victor wanted.
Fear.
Control.
Silence.
“You won’t touch my son.””
Victor stepped closer.
“I don’t have to.””
The argument became louder.
Elizabeth entered.
She had followed Richard after realizing something was wrong.
She saw the documents.
She saw Victor.
And she understood.
“Richard.””
He turned.
“Elizabeth, leave.””
“No.””
Victor looked at her.
“This concerns you too.””
Elizabeth frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Victor smiled.
“Your husband knows about your secret.””
Richard looked confused.
“What secret?””
Elizabeth froze.
And that was when Victor knew he had won.
Back in the cabin, Daniel stared at his mother.
“What secret?””
Elizabeth’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She nodded.
“You deserve the truth.””
Victor watched silently.
Enjoying every second.
Elizabeth whispered:
“Your father wasn’t my first husband.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“I had another life before Richard.””
The room went quiet.
“And?””
Elizabeth looked at the floor.
“And Victor knew about it.””
Daniel turned toward Victor.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
Victor answered.
“Everything.””
He stepped closer.
“Your mother had a reason to hide.””
Elizabeth shook her head.
“No.””
Victor ignored her.
“She wasn’t innocent.””
Daniel felt torn.
Every person around him had lied.
Every person had a secret.
He didn’t know who to believe anymore.
“Mom.””
Elizabeth looked at him.
“I made mistakes.””
The honesty surprised him.
“But I never killed your father.””
Victor smiled.
“You expect him to believe that?””
Elizabeth looked at Daniel.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Because I can prove it.””
Daniel stared.
“How?””
Elizabeth walked toward an old wooden cabinet.
She opened it.
Inside was a small recorder.
Thomas immediately recognized it.
“Richard’s.””
Elizabeth nodded.
“Your father recorded everything.””
Victor’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Daniel noticed.
“What’s wrong?””
Victor didn’t answer.
Thomas took the recorder.
“We need to hear this.””
Victor suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
He grabbed the device.
Thomas reacted immediately.
The two men struggled.
The recorder fell.
Daniel picked it up.
Victor turned toward him.
“Give that to me.””
For the first time, Daniel saw real fear in his uncle’s eyes.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
Daniel pressed play.
Static filled the cabin.
Then a voice.
His father.
“If you are hearing this, then Victor has probably tried to convince you Elizabeth is responsible.””
Victor went completely still.
Richard’s voice continued.
“She is not.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
The recording continued.
“Victor planned everything.””
A silence.
Then:
“He forced Elizabeth to sign a false confession because he needed someone else to blame.””
Victor lunged forward.
Daniel stepped back.
Thomas blocked him.
Richard’s voice continued.
“He killed the person who discovered the truth.””
Daniel whispered:
“No…”
The recording played the final sentence.
“The person who knows the full story is not Victor.””
Everyone froze.
Because Richard’s next words were directed at someone else.
Someone they never expected.
“Eleanor.””
Victor’s face changed.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
The recording ended.
The cabin fell silent.
Victor slowly smiled.
A strange, defeated smile.
Because the truth was finally coming out.
But Daniel had one question left.
“If Eleanor was involved…”
He looked at Victor.
“Why did she try to kill Sarah?””
Victor looked toward the dark window.
Then he answered quietly.
“Because she found out what I was planning.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“What were you planning?””
Victor looked directly at him.
“To take the Vance empire.””
A pause.
“And your wife’s baby was the one thing standing in my way.””
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
Breathing heavily.
Terrified.
“Daniel…”
His face changed.
“Who is this?””
The voice whispered:
“It’s Eleanor.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then Eleanor said the words that made his blood run cold.
“I’m trapped.””
A sound came from the background.
A door locking.
Metal against metal.
Then Eleanor whispered:
“Victor was never working for me.””
Silence.
“He was using me.””
The call began cutting out.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
Her final words came through.
“Your father wasn’t Victor’s only victim.””
The line went dead.
May you like
And somewhere in the distance…
A second phone started ringing.
