Chapter 4: The Secret Buried Under the Foundation

Daniel had spent his entire life believing his father’s death was a tragedy.

A terrible accident.

A moment of bad luck.

But now, standing in a quiet hospital room with a stranger claiming to know the truth, Daniel felt the foundation of his entire world cracking beneath him.

“You were with my father the night he died?”” Daniel asked.

Thomas Reed nodded.

“I was.””

“Then why did everyone say he was alone?””

Thomas looked toward the window.

“Because someone wanted everyone to believe that.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Eleanor?””

The older man didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence was enough.

Margaret slowly closed the hospital room door behind them.

For years, she had carried secrets that were never hers to carry.

Now they were finally coming into the light.

“Tell him everything,” she said.

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“Before I do, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Your father wasn’t just trying to expose Eleanor.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Thomas reached into his coat and pulled out an old envelope.

The paper was yellowed with age.

“I mean he discovered something much bigger.””

Daniel stared at the envelope.

“What’s inside?””

“Your father’s final evidence.””

The room became silent.

Daniel didn’t touch it.

Not yet.

Because part of him was afraid.

Afraid that once he opened it, there would be no way to return to the life he knew.

Finally, he took the envelope.

His fingers trembled slightly as he opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His father’s.

Daniel read the first line.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, then something happened to me.*

His breathing stopped.

He continued.

*I need you to know that I never trusted Eleanor. She has been hiding something from this family for years.*

Daniel looked up.

“She knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father suspected her long before anyone else did.””

Daniel looked back at the letter.

*She wasn’t only stealing money. She was preparing to take control of everything after my death.*

The words blurred.

Daniel swallowed hard.

“How much did she take?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“Millions.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The memories came rushing back.

Eleanor telling him the family company was struggling.

Eleanor convincing him to delay certain business decisions.

Eleanor insisting that she was protecting his inheritance.

All those moments suddenly looked different.

Like pieces of a puzzle he never wanted to solve.

“She lied to me my entire life.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“She knew exactly what she was doing.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why didn’t you stop her?””

The question wasn’t angry.

It was broken.

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“Because I failed your father.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel had never heard Margaret blame herself for anything.

“What happened that night?””

Thomas looked at the floor.

“I’ll tell you what I saw.””

Fifteen years earlier.

The Vance estate had been surrounded by heavy rain.

Thomas Reed had been Daniel’s father’s closest business advisor.

He had known Richard Vance for twenty years.

And he knew Richard was not a man who panicked easily.

But that night, Richard had called him with fear in his voice.

“Thomas, I found something.””

“What?””

“Eleanor has been moving money through private accounts.””

Thomas remembered arriving at the mansion.

Richard had been waiting in his office.

The lights were off.

The curtains were closed.

“He looked like a man who knew his life was about to change,” Thomas said.

Daniel listened silently.

“He told me he planned to confront Eleanor the next morning.””

“And?””

Thomas’s expression darkened.

“He never got the chance.””

Daniel looked up.

“What happened?””

“Eleanor came into the office while we were talking.””

Margaret’s face changed.

“She knew you were there?””

Thomas nodded.

“She heard everything.””

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

“What did she do?””

Thomas looked at him.

“She smiled.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“She didn’t cry. She didn’t deny anything. She simply told your father that nobody would believe him.””

Daniel felt sick.

“And my father?””

“He told her he would make sure the truth came out.””

Thomas paused.

“Then she said something I will never forget.””

“What?””

Thomas looked directly at Daniel.

“She said, ‘You always thought money was power, Richard. But secrets are power.’”

Daniel felt a chill.

“What happened after that?””

Thomas continued.

“Your father told me to leave with the documents. He said if anything happened to him, I needed to protect you.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Thomas looked away.

“Because Eleanor found me before I could.””

The scar on his face suddenly seemed more noticeable.

“She followed me.””

Daniel stared.

“You were attacked?””

Thomas nodded.

“She crashed her car into mine.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

“You survived?””

“Barely.””

Daniel looked at the scar.

“Everyone thought you died?””

“She made sure they did.””

The room fell silent.

Daniel looked at the envelope again.

All these years, he had believed he had lost his father.

Now he realized someone had taken him away.

Someone had taken the truth away too.

His phone suddenly rang.

The sound made everyone jump.

Daniel looked at the screen.

It was from the hospital security office.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A worried voice came through.

“Mr. Vance, you need to return to your wife’s room immediately.””

Daniel stood.

“What happened?””

The security officer hesitated.

“Someone entered the room while she was sleeping.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

“They didn’t take anything.””

“Then why are you calling me?””

The officer swallowed.

“Because they left something behind.””

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“A photograph.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“What photograph?””

The security officer answered.

“Your wife’s ultrasound picture.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel felt his blood run cold.

“That’s impossible.””

The officer continued.

“It was torn in half.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Where is Sarah?””

“She’s awake.””

A breath of relief.

Then the officer added:

“But she says the person who left it behind whispered something before leaving.””

Daniel’s voice became low.

“What did they say?””

The officer paused.

“Your wife said the person told her…”

The line crackled.

Then:

“Ask Daniel why his father really died.””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

Thomas looked terrified.

Margaret whispered:

“She knows.””

Daniel turned toward the hospital hallway.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

But everyone already knew.

Because only one person had enough power to enter that room.

Only one person had enough hatred.

Only one person had everything to lose.

And when Daniel stepped back into Sarah’s hospital room, he found something waiting on the pillow beside her.

A second photograph.

But this one wasn’t of the past.

It was taken that very night.

A picture of Eleanor standing outside Sarah’s hospital door.

Watching.

Waiting.

May you like

And written across the bottom of the photo were five words:

*She is coming back for you.*
