Chapter 7: The Voice From Beyond the Grave
Nobody moved.
Nobody even seemed to remember how to breathe.
The phone in Eleanor Vance’s hand continued ringing.
The name glowing on the screen was impossible.
*Elizabeth Vance.*
Daniel stared at it.
His mother’s name.
A name he had not seen in fourteen years.
A name that belonged to a woman everyone believed was dead.
“No,” Daniel whispered.
The rain poured around them, drowning out the sounds of the city.
But not the sound of that phone.
Eleanor looked at Daniel.
For once, she wasn’t smiling.
She wasn’t in control.
She looked afraid.
“Answer it,” Thomas said quietly.
Eleanor’s eyes moved toward him.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at the phone again.
The ringing stopped.
Everyone waited.
Then the phone rang again.
Same name.
Same impossible truth.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Give me the phone.””
Eleanor tightened her grip.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Daniel noticed.
“So it’s real.””
Eleanor looked at him.
“What?””
“My mother.””
A painful silence followed.
“Is she alive?””
Eleanor didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The truth was already written on her face.
Daniel felt like the ground beneath him had disappeared.
“My entire life…”
His voice cracked.
“You let me believe she was dead.””
Eleanor looked away.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No more excuses.””
His eyes filled with anger.
“Fourteen years.””
He pointed at the phone.
“Fourteen years, I visited a grave that wasn’t hers.””
Claire stood silently nearby.
She looked at Eleanor with a mixture of sadness and disappointment.
“You lied to everyone.””
Eleanor looked at her daughter.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Claire laughed softly.
A broken laugh.
“That’s what you always say.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Answer the phone.””
Eleanor looked at him.
“You think you know everything.””
“No.””
Thomas’s voice was calm.
“But I know enough.””
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, Daniel reached out.
“Give it to me.””
Eleanor hesitated.
For a moment, it looked like she would refuse.
Then she handed it over.
Daniel pressed answer.
The world stopped.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a woman’s voice.
A voice older than he remembered.
But still familiar.
“Daniel?””
His knees almost gave out.
Because he knew that voice.
Even after fourteen years.
Even after everyone told him he would never hear it again.
“Mom?””
The word came out like a child’s cry.
Nobody spoke.
The woman on the phone began crying.
“Oh my God…”
Daniel covered his mouth.
His entire body shook.
“Is it really you?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology destroyed him.
He had imagined this moment thousands of times.
His mother returning.
His mother explaining.
His mother telling him why she left.
But he never imagined hearing pain in her voice.
“Where are you?””
Daniel asked.
“I can’t tell you.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“Not yet.””
“Mom, I need answers.””
“I know.””
Her voice trembled.
“But if Eleanor knows where I am, she will come after me.””
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
The woman who had raised him.
The woman who had tried to destroy his wife.
The woman who had spent years hiding the truth.
“She already knows.””
There was silence.
Then his mother whispered:
“Then I’m too late.””
Daniel froze.
“What does that mean?””
His mother took a shaky breath.
“It means Eleanor knows the secret.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“What secret?””
Elizabeth heard his voice.
And immediately went quiet.
“Thomas?””
Daniel looked surprised.
“You know him?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
“Thomas saved my life.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“What?””
Elizabeth continued.
“Your father discovered the truth. When Eleanor realized she would lose everything, she tried to make sure nobody could expose her.””
Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.
“But you survived.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Because Thomas got me out.””
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“Then why did everyone think you died?””
Elizabeth’s voice became quiet.
“Because Eleanor wanted them to.””
The rain seemed to stop.
Daniel looked at the woman standing across from him.
For years, he had thought Eleanor was the person who stayed after his mother disappeared.
Now he realized she was the reason his mother vanished.
“Where have you been?””
Daniel asked.
“Running.””
The answer hurt more than anything.
“From Eleanor?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Because she threatened you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She told me if I returned, she would destroy you.””
His mother’s voice broke.
“She said she would make everyone believe I was unstable. She said she would take the company, the house, everything.””
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“And you believed her?””
“Yes.””
The answer was painful.
“Because she had already proven she could hurt people.””
Eleanor stood apart from them.
She watched Daniel.
Watched the anger replacing the love he once had for her.
It was unbearable.
Not because she regretted what she had done.
Because she regretted losing control.
She slowly stepped backward.
Nobody noticed.
Nobody except Claire.
“Mom.””
Eleanor stopped.
Claire looked at her.
“Don’t run.””
For a moment, Eleanor looked at her daughter.
Something almost human appeared.
Then it disappeared.
“You think you know me.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I think I finally see you.””
The words cut deeper than any accusation.
Eleanor turned away.
“You were always weak.””
Claire’s face changed.
“What?””
“You always wanted love.””
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“That’s why you’re useless.””
Thomas looked at her with disgust.
“Enough.””
But Claire didn’t cry.
Not this time.
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“For my entire life, I thought you were cold because you had been hurt.””
Her voice grew stronger.
“I thought you were cruel because the world had been cruel to you.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“But you were cruel because you enjoyed having power over people.””
Eleanor stared.
“You’re nothing without me.””
Claire wiped her face.
“No.””
She looked at Daniel.
“I was nothing because of you.””
The silence afterward was devastating.
An hour later, Daniel sat beside Sarah’s hospital bed.
He hadn’t told her everything yet.
Not because he wanted to hide it.
Because he didn’t know how to explain a truth that sounded impossible.
His mother was alive.
Eleanor had lied.
His entire family history was built on secrets.
Sarah reached for his hand.
“You look like you lost someone.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I found someone.””
Her expression softened.
“What?””
“My mother.””
Sarah sat up slightly.
“What?””
“She’s alive.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel told her everything.
Every secret.
Every lie.
Every piece of the puzzle.
When he finished, Sarah looked toward the window.
“Daniel.””
“Yeah?””
“If Eleanor knew your mother was alive…”
He looked at her.
“What?””
Sarah’s face changed.
“She won’t just try to protect herself.””
A chill moved through him.
“She’ll try to erase the last person who can expose her.””
Before Daniel could answer, his phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
A picture appeared.
His mother.
Standing outside a small cabin.
Alive.
But frightened.
Under the picture was a message.
*You found her too late.*
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
Then another message appeared.
*Ask Eleanor who sent me to find her.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
Because there was only one person who could have given that order.
And it wasn’t Eleanor.
It was someone they hadn’t suspected.
May you like
Someone inside the Vance family.
Someone who had been hiding in the shadows from the beginning.
