Chapter 2: The Recording That Changed Everything

The sound of Eleanor Vance’s own voice echoed through the mansion like a ghost returning from the dead.

“I need Sarah gone before Daniel finds out what I did…”

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The recording continued.

“I’ve protected this family’s reputation for years. I won’t let some outsider destroy everything I built.””

Eleanor’s eyes remained fixed on the small black recorder in Margaret’s hand.

For the first time in decades, the woman who had controlled every room she entered looked powerless.

“Turn that off,” Eleanor ordered.

Margaret didn’t move.

“Margaret.””

The old housekeeper lifted her chin.

“No, Mrs. Vance.””

The refusal shocked everyone.

The maids exchanged frightened glances.

They had spent years watching employees disappear after disagreeing with Eleanor. A driver who questioned her instructions was fired the next morning. A chef who complained about her cruelty suddenly found himself blacklisted by every luxury household in the city.

But Margaret had stayed.

Because she knew the Vance family before Eleanor became its ruler.

And she knew Daniel was worth protecting.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing,” Eleanor said quietly.

Margaret looked at the recorder.

“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

The ambulance siren grew louder outside.

Daniel stood near the front doors, holding Sarah’s hand as paramedics carefully placed her onto the stretcher.

“Please,” Sarah whispered.

Daniel leaned closer.

“I’m here.””

“Don’t leave me.””

His expression broke.

“I won’t.””

But Sarah’s eyes moved toward the staircase.

Toward Eleanor.

“She pushed me.””

The words were barely audible.

Yet they struck the room harder than any scream.

Daniel froze.

Eleanor immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, she’s confused.””

Sarah looked at her.

“I’m not.””

“You’re in shock,” Eleanor replied.

“You almost fell from a balcony. Your mind is trying to make sense of what happened.””

Daniel stared between them.

For years, he had believed his stepmother was difficult but loyal. Controlling, maybe. Cold, definitely.

But dangerous?

That was impossible.

At least, that was what he had always told himself.

Then he heard the recording again.

“I need Sarah gone before Daniel finds out what I did…”

His stomach tightened.

“What did you do, Eleanor?””

The question changed everything.

Eleanor’s face hardened.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

Daniel stepped away from Sarah’s stretcher.

“What did you do?””

A flicker of anger appeared in Eleanor’s eyes.

“You’re questioning me because of a manipulated recording?””

Margaret looked confused.

“Manipulated?””

Eleanor pointed at her.

“She has always been overly attached to Sarah. She would do anything to protect her.””

Margaret’s expression turned hurt.

“I protected this family long before you arrived.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“What does that mean?””

The old housekeeper hesitated.

It was clear she had been carrying a secret for a long time.

“Daniel…”

She glanced toward Eleanor.

Then back at him.

“There are things your father never told you.””

Eleanor’s face changed.

“Margaret, don’t.””

But Margaret continued.

“Your father didn’t choose Eleanor because he loved her.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Eleanor’s voice became sharp.

“That’s enough.””

“No,” Margaret said.

“It’s time he knew.””

The paramedics exchanged uncomfortable looks, but nobody interrupted.

Daniel’s entire world seemed to shift.

“My father married Eleanor fourteen years ago,” he said slowly.

“What are you talking about?””

Margaret swallowed.

“Your father was planning to leave her.””

Eleanor went completely still.

Daniel blinked.

“Why?””

The old housekeeper looked at the floor.

“Because he discovered she had been moving money from family accounts.””

A wave of silence crashed over the mansion.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“That’s impossible.””

Eleanor laughed once.

A nervous, empty sound.

“You’re believing a housekeeper over your own family?””

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“I have documents.””

That was when Eleanor’s confidence disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

“You have documents?””

Margaret nodded.

“I kept copies because I knew one day she would try to erase the evidence.””

Eleanor stepped closer.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

Margaret’s voice trembled.

“But I wish I was.””

Daniel looked toward the recorder.

“What else is on it?””

Margaret pressed another button.

The audio changed.

This time, Eleanor’s voice sounded angrier.

“If Sarah has that child, Daniel will never put the family business first. He’ll give everything away.””

A pause.

Then another voice.

A man’s voice.

Unknown.

“You need to be careful. If something happens to the baby, people will ask questions.””

Eleanor replied.

“Then make sure nobody asks.””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

The room seemed to shrink.

Sarah covered her mouth.

She had suspected Eleanor hated her.

But she never imagined this.

Daniel stared at Eleanor.

“Who is that man?””

Eleanor said nothing.

“Who is he?””

Her silence was the answer.

Daniel took a step backward.

“No…”

Eleanor finally broke.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“Who is he?””

“I can explain.””

“That’s what guilty people say.””

The words hurt her.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they came from Daniel.

The boy she had raised.

The man whose trust she had spent years manipulating.

“You think I would hurt your child?”” Eleanor whispered.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I think you just tried to convince everyone my wife fell.””

Sarah looked at him.

And in that moment, she realized something.

Daniel wasn’t defending Eleanor anymore.

He was finally seeing her.

The ambulance doors opened.

A paramedic called out.

“We need to leave now!””

Daniel immediately returned to Sarah.

“I’m coming with you.””

Sarah squeezed his hand.

“Daniel…”

“I’m sorry.””

A tear formed in his eyes.

“I should have listened to you.””

Before Sarah could answer, the paramedics rolled her outside.

Daniel followed.

But before he left, he turned around.

His gaze met Eleanor’s.

“I want every account, every document, and every record connected to the Vance estate.””

Eleanor stared at him.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

Daniel’s expression was broken.

“No.””

A pause.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

Then he walked away.

The mansion doors closed.

For the first time in fourteen years, Eleanor Vance stood alone.

But she wasn’t defeated.

Not yet.

She walked slowly toward the center of the foyer.

Her hands were shaking.

Then her phone rang.

The screen showed a name she hadn’t seen in years.

A name that should have been impossible.

Eleanor answered with a trembling hand.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“You need to leave the Vance mansion tonight.””

Eleanor frowned.

“Who is this?””

The voice became colder.

“The person who knows the real reason Daniel’s father died.””

Eleanor’s blood turned cold.

May you like

Because there was only one person alive who knew that secret.

And he had just returned.
