Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside the Family
The message remained on Daniel’s phone.
*You found her too late.*
For several seconds, he couldn’t move.
The photograph of his mother standing outside the small cabin burned into his mind.
She was alive.
She was scared.
And someone knew exactly where she was.
Sarah watched his expression change.
“Daniel?””
He looked up.
“There’s someone else involved.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel handed her the phone.
Sarah studied the picture.
Then she looked at the message underneath.
*Ask Eleanor who sent me to find her.*
A cold feeling passed through the room.
“Eleanor isn’t the only person hiding something.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s what I’m thinking.””
Sarah looked toward the hospital door.
“Who else knew?””
Daniel stood.
“Everyone close to the family.””
“Your employees?””
“Some of them.””
“Your relatives?””
Daniel froze.
A name appeared in his mind.
A name he had not considered.
“Victor.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Who is Victor?””
“My uncle.””
The words felt strange.
Because suddenly every forgotten memory seemed important.
Victor Vance.
His father’s younger brother.
The man who had disappeared from the family business after Richard Vance’s death.
The man who had always claimed he wanted nothing from the Vance fortune.
The man who had comforted Daniel after losing his mother.
“He was the one who told me the accident story,” Daniel whispered.
Sarah looked at him.
“What?””
“He was the person who explained what happened.””
A pause.
“He said my mother couldn’t survive the crash.””
Sarah slowly sat up.
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
“What?””
“What if he knew she survived?””
The question was simple.
But it destroyed everything.
At the Vance mansion, Eleanor sat in silence inside her office.
She had spent the last hour staring at the same document.
Not reading it.
Just staring.
Because the world she built was collapsing.
The door opened.
She didn’t look up.
“You’re late.””
A man walked inside.
Victor Vance.
Older than Daniel.
Calm.
Perfectly dressed.
Unlike Eleanor, he showed no fear.
“You always were impatient.””
Eleanor finally looked at him.
“You sent someone after Elizabeth.””
Victor smiled.
“So you figured it out.””
Her expression hardened.
“Why?””
Victor walked toward the desk.
“Because you were becoming careless.””
“Careless?””
“You pushed Sarah off a balcony.””
Eleanor stood.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
“No.””
Victor looked around the office.
“I get to remind you that without me, you would have lost everything years ago.””
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
“You needed me.””
“I needed someone everyone would blame.””
The sentence hung in the air.
Eleanor stared at him.
“What did you say?””
Victor calmly poured himself a drink.
“You were always emotional. Always angry. Always desperate for power.””
He looked at her.
“Perfect.””
Eleanor’s face changed.
“You used me.””
Victor smiled.
“Of course.””
For the first time, Eleanor looked genuinely shocked.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
Victor took a sip.
“I think I’m smarter than you.””
The arrogance in his voice made her sick.
“You helped me hide Richard’s death.””
Victor corrected her.
“I helped you hide the truth.””
Eleanor stepped closer.
“And now?””
“Now Daniel is close to discovering everything.””
“So you’re going to kill Elizabeth?””
Victor looked at her.
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m going to make sure Daniel never believes her.””
Eleanor frowned.
“How?””
Victor smiled.
“The same way we destroyed her reputation fifteen years ago.””
Daniel arrived at the cabin location before sunrise.
He brought Thomas, Margaret, and two trusted security employees.
He didn’t tell the police.
Not yet.
Too many people had been involved.
Too many secrets had survived because the wrong people were trusted.
The cabin sat deep in the woods.
Old.
Quiet.
Hidden from the world.
Daniel stepped toward the door.
His heart was pounding.
Not because he was afraid.
Because for the first time in fourteen years, he was about to see his mother.
He knocked.
Nothing.
He knocked again.
“Mom?””
Silence.
Thomas looked around.
“She may have left.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the cabin.
“She was here.””
He felt it.
A strange certainty.
Like some part of him remembered.
The door was unlocked.
Daniel slowly opened it.
Inside was a small living room.
A kitchen.
A table.
And dozens of photographs.
His childhood.
His father.
His mother.
Photos he had never seen.
Daniel walked closer.
His fingers touched one.
A picture of him as a little boy sitting between his parents.
A tear escaped before he could stop it.
“She kept these all these years.””
Thomas looked around.
“She never stopped loving you.””
Then a sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked up.
“Mom?””
A voice answered.
“Daniel.””
His heart stopped.
A woman slowly appeared at the top of the stairs.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably her.
His mother.
Elizabeth Vance.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then Daniel ran.
He reached the stairs and held her tightly.
The woman who had disappeared.
The woman he had mourned.
The woman he thought he would never see again.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Daniel cried into her shoulder.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
“I tried.””
Her voice broke.
“Every year.””
“Then why?””
Elizabeth looked at Thomas.
Then at the documents scattered on the table.
“Because Victor stopped me.””
Daniel pulled away.
“What?””
His mother looked terrified.
“Victor Vance.””
The name felt like a weapon.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Elizabeth sat down slowly.
“He was the one who planned everything.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She held his gaze.
“Your uncle wanted your father’s company.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“That’s why Richard had evidence.””
Elizabeth continued.
“He discovered Victor had been secretly moving money from the business.””
Daniel felt sick.
“So Eleanor…”
“She was a tool.””
The words were painful.
“Victor convinced her she could control the family after Richard was gone.””
Daniel looked away.
“All these years…”
Elizabeth reached for his hand.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because Victor threatened you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“He threatened my life?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He threatened your future.””
A pause.
“He said he would destroy your reputation. He said he would make everyone believe you were involved.””
Daniel clenched his fists.
“So he used Eleanor.””
“Yes.””
“And then what?””
Elizabeth looked down.
“Then Eleanor realized she was also being used.””
Daniel frowned.
“What happened?””
His mother’s eyes filled with fear.
“She tried to turn against him.””
The room went silent.
“That’s why he kept her close.””
Daniel looked toward the cabin window.
“So the person controlling everything…”
“Is Victor.””
Before anyone could respond, a car engine sounded outside.
Everyone froze.
Thomas moved toward the window.
His face changed.
“Someone is here.””
Daniel stepped beside him.
A black vehicle stopped outside.
The door opened.
A man stepped out.
Victor.
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“How did he find us?””
Elizabeth whispered:
“Because he always knew where I was.””
Victor walked toward the cabin.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like he owned the place.
Daniel moved toward the door.
Thomas grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
But Daniel pulled away.
“No.””
He opened the door.
Victor stood outside.
For several seconds, the two men stared at each other.
Then Victor smiled.
“There you are.””
Daniel’s voice was filled with hatred.
“You destroyed my family.””
Victor tilted his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“I saved it.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“Saved it?””
Victor looked past him.
Toward Elizabeth.
“She’ll tell you anything to make herself innocent.””
Elizabeth stepped forward.
“You know that’s not true.””
Victor smiled.
“Do I?””
Then he reached into his coat.
Everyone froze.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a document.
And handed it to Daniel.
“Before you decide who the villain is…”
Victor said quietly.
“You should see what your mother signed fifteen years ago.””
Daniel looked down.
The document had one name at the bottom.
His mother’s signature.
May you like
And the title above it made his entire body go cold.
*Confession of Murder.*
