Chapter 9: The Confession Behind the Locked Door
Daniel returned home with the journal clutched beneath his arm and a message burning in his mind.
Ask Nicole what happened nine months before Maya was born.
The house was unnaturally quiet when he entered.
Nicole sat at the kitchen island, the same marble surface where she'd accused Maya of being pregnant. The pregnancy test was gone, but a faint ring from a water glass remained beside the place where it had lain.
She looked up.
“Where have you been?””
Daniel placed the journal on the counter.
“Finding out how many people in my family have lied to me.””
Nicole's eyes fell on the book.
Her face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“Patricia gave it to me.””
“She had no right.””
“Neither did you, apparently, when you decided to investigate our daughter's DNA without her permission.””
Nicole rose.
“Daniel, I can explain.””
“Then explain what happened nine months before Maya was born.””
Her face drained of color.
He watched her carefully.
“Who is Ethan Brooks?””
Nicole gripped the counter.
“Why are you asking me that?””
“Because he's the boy your family separated from his twin sister. Because he was raised by Sarah Reed. Because Michael threatened his mother. And because someone has produced a document with my father's signature claiming I authorized an adoption that happened after he died.””
Nicole stared at him.
For several seconds, she seemed unable to breathe.
Then she whispered, “You shouldn't have gone to Patricia.””
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
“That's your response?””
“Patricia doesn't understand what happened.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
Nicole looked toward the staircase.
“Where are the children?””
“Maya is with Elena. Noah is upstairs.””
“Good.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Don't say that as though you're relieved they can't hear you.””
Nicole pressed her palms against her eyes.
“I was trying to protect them.””
He struck the counter with his hand.
“Stop saying that!””
She recoiled.
“You keep using those words as if they erase everything you've done. You accused Maya of being pregnant. You hid your own test.
You lied about meeting Adrian. You knew about the twins, and you allowed my brother to threaten a woman whose children were taken from her.””
Tears streamed down Nicole's face.
“I never wanted any of this.””
“Then why did you help create it?””
She sank into a chair.
“Because I was afraid of losing you.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Tell me the truth about Maya.””
Nicole's shoulders shook.
“Maya is your daughter.””
“Biologically?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did someone alter her birth records?””
Nicole closed her eyes.
“Because the records were changed to hide Ethan and Elena. Your father had discovered that the hospital had made an error in the twins' paperwork. He wanted to correct it, but your mother feared the scandal. She believed the twins' existence would give Sarah's family a claim against the estate.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“My father was dead before the final records were filed.””
Nicole looked up.
“Because the documents were prepared before he died. Patricia used the original authorization to complete the adoption afterward.””
“Why was my name on the record?””
“Because you were listed as the legal guardian who would protect the child if the adoption was challenged.””
Daniel stared at her.
“I never agreed to that.””
“I know.””
The admission left him speechless.
Nicole continued.
“Your mother asked me to keep the records hidden. She said the twins would be better off with separate families. She told me Sarah was unstable, that she couldn't raise two children, and that separating them was the only way to give them a chance.””
“And you believed her?””
“At first.””
“What changed?””
Nicole looked down at her hands.
“Sarah came to see me after the adoption. She begged me to help her find her son. She had a photograph of both babies, and she knew the hospital had lied to her.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“What did you tell her?””
“I told her I couldn't help.””
He stared at his wife.
“You sent a grieving mother away.””
Nicole began sobbing.
“I was pregnant with Maya. I was terrified. Your mother had made it clear that if I spoke, she would make sure I lost everything.””
Daniel's anger faltered, replaced by a terrible sadness.
“You could have come to me.””
“I know.””
“You could have trusted me.””
“I know.””
“Instead, you spent nineteen years pretending nothing had happened.””
Nicole shook her head.
“Not nineteen years. I tried to tell you once.””
Daniel frowned.
“When?””
“Four years ago. I found another letter from Sarah. She had been searching for the twins again.
I left the letter on your desk, but you were preparing for the biggest project of your career. You told me that if it was another family problem, I should handle it myself.””
Daniel remembered the evening.
He'd been exhausted, arguing with a business partner, and impatient to get back to work. He remembered dismissing Nicole's concerns without looking at the envelope she held.
He had thought she was talking about a charity dispute.
He hadn't known she was trying to tell him that two children had been separated at birth.
For the first time, he saw how his own indifference had given the secret room to grow.
But it didn't excuse what Nicole had done afterward.
“What happened with Adrian?”” he asked.
Nicole wiped her face.
“I met him because he was helping me find medical records. I wanted to know whether I could have another child.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought another baby might give me a chance to start over.””
Daniel looked at her in disbelief.
“You thought a new child would erase the past?””
“No. I thought it might help me become someone who wasn't afraid anymore.””
“And when you discovered you might be pregnant?””
“I panicked. Adrian and I had been involved, but I didn't know whether the pregnancy was his or yours. I bought the test and hid it. Then I found another test in the downstairs bathroom.””
“You still haven't explained why you accused Maya.””
Nicole looked away.
“Because I saw her holding a pregnancy test earlier that day.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why would Maya have a pregnancy test?””
“She said it belonged to a friend. I thought she might be pregnant and hiding it from us. When I found the test in the bathroom, I convinced myself it was hers.””
“That doesn't explain the photograph.””
Nicole went still.
Daniel reached into his pocket and showed her Adrian's photograph of the test on the island.
“Who took this?””
Nicole stared at the image.
“Michael.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“He wanted me to confess before he revealed everything. He said if I didn't tell you about the twins, he would send you the documents himself.””
“And you thought accusing Maya would distract me?””
Nicole didn't answer.
Daniel pushed away from the counter.
“You sacrificed your daughter's dignity to protect yourself.””
“I was desperate!””
“So was Sarah. So were those children. But you had choices.””
Nicole covered her face.
For a long time, neither of them spoke.
Then she lowered her hands and looked at him.
“There is something I haven't told you.””
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
“Go on.””
“The pregnancy test on the island wasn't mine.””
He opened his eyes.
“What?””
“I bought one yesterday, but the test I placed on the counter was the one Maya had been holding.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Where did you get it?””
“I took it from her bag while she was in the shower.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to see whether it was positive before I confronted her.””
Daniel's stomach turned.
“And you knew it belonged to her?””
Nicole nodded.
“But I didn't know whether she'd used it herself or was carrying it for someone else.””
“Did you read the result?””
“No. I didn't have the courage.””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
He remembered Maya's face when Nicole had accused her. The shock. The humiliation. The desperate plea for him to believe her.
He had spent the evening chasing his wife's secrets while his daughter had been forced to defend herself against an accusation that might not even have been based on the truth.
He turned back to Nicole.
“You're going to apologize to Maya. Not tomorrow. Not after you've had time to prepare some explanation. Tonight.””
Nicole nodded through her tears.
“And you're going to tell Adrian the truth about the pregnancy.””
“I will.””
“And you're going to stop hiding behind my mother, my brother, and everyone else who helped you lie.””
Nicole whispered, “I will.””
Daniel picked up the journal.
“One more question. Why did Michael say Maya knew what happened that night?””
Nicole's expression shifted.
“He was talking about the night you brought Maya home from the hospital.””
Daniel frowned.
“What about it?””
Nicole looked at him with a fear he hadn't seen before.
“You were told Maya was born at 11:42 p.m. But she wasn't.””
Daniel felt his heart begin to pound.
“What are you saying?””
Nicole's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Maya was born at 11:42. But the baby you held that night wasn't Maya.””
The kitchen seemed to fall away beneath him.
Nicole reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, faded photograph.
It showed Daniel standing beside a hospital bed, holding a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.
On the back, someone had written:
November 14. The night we brought our daughter home.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
He recognized the room.
He recognized the blanket.
But the baby in his arms had a hospital bracelet around one tiny wrist.
And the name on it wasn't Maya.
It was *ELENA REED*.
He slowly raised his eyes to his wife.
“Who did I bring home that night?””
Nicole's lips trembled.
“Your daughter.””
“Which daughter?””
Before she could answer, a scream came from upstairs.
Maya's voice.
“DAD! YOU NEED TO COME HERE!””
Daniel raced toward the staircase.
At the top landing, Maya stood beside Noah's open bedroom door, holding a small metal box she'd found beneath his bed.
Inside the box lay a second hospital bracelet.
And a letter addressed to Daniel.
The handwriting was his mother's.
