Chapter 2: The Secret in the Pharmacy Bag

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel held the folded paper in one hand. Nicole stood opposite him, her carefully styled hair shining beneath the kitchen lights, her beige dress immaculate despite the chaos she had created.

Maya stared at her mother.

“Noah,” she said gently, “what do you mean?””

The little boy shrank into his hoodie.

Nicole turned on him.

“That's enough. Upstairs. Now.””

“No,” Daniel said.

His voice wasn't loud, but the command stopped Nicole in her tracks.

He crouched in front of Noah.

“Buddy, I need you to tell me exactly what you heard. You're not in trouble.””

Noah looked at his father, then at his mother.

“She was on the phone yesterday.””

“Where?””

“In the laundry room. I was looking for my soccer shoes.””

Nicole shook her head.

“He misunderstands everything when he's tired.””

Daniel didn't look at her.

“What did Mom say, Noah?””

The boy rubbed his sleeve between his fingers.

“She said she couldn't keep pretending much longer. Then she said the baby would change everything.””

Maya felt a sharp pressure in her chest.

“What baby?”” she asked.

Noah looked confused.

“I don't know. I thought she meant a baby in a TV show.””

Nicole stepped forward and reached for his shoulder.

“Sweetheart, you heard a private conversation. You shouldn't repeat things you don't understand.””

Noah moved away from her hand.

“But you said Dad couldn't find out.””

Daniel slowly stood.

“Nicole, is there something you need to tell me?””

She wiped beneath one eye, careful not to disturb her makeup.

“I am exhausted. I've spent years holding this family together while you work late, travel, and act as though money fixes everything. Now our daughter is standing here disrespecting me, and you're interrogating me because an eight-year-old overheard half a phone call.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

“Maybe you should ask Maya why she brought this disgrace into our home.””

Maya flinched.

Daniel's expression darkened.

“You will not use my daughter to distract me.””

Nicole looked genuinely startled.

It was the first time that evening he had defended Maya without hesitation.

He turned back to the paper.

“Your appointment is tomorrow at nine. What are you going to the clinic for?””

“A consultation.””

“About what?””

“My health.””

“Are you pregnant?””

Nicole's lips parted.

Then closed.

That silence was an answer of its own.

Maya gripped the edge of the island.

“Mom?””

Nicole finally looked at her.

“I don't owe you an explanation.””

“You accused me of being pregnant in front of my father!””

“Because I found a test in the bathroom!””

“And you bought one yesterday!””

“Enough!”” Nicole shouted.

Noah jumped.

Daniel immediately moved between them.

“Do not shout at him.””

Nicole stared at her husband as if she couldn't recognize him.

“You're taking their side.””

“I'm taking the side of the truth.””

For a moment, something ugly passed across Nicole's face. It wasn't sadness or embarrassment. It was anger at having lost control of the room.

Then she picked up the pregnancy test from the counter.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

She placed it inside the pharmacy bag.

“I bought a test because I was worried about something. That is my business. I found another test in the bathroom, and I assumed it belonged to Maya. Perhaps I was wrong about that detail.””

“Perhaps?”” Maya repeated.

“You called me a liar.””

“I was upset.””

“You told Dad I had betrayed the family!””

“And I said I may have been mistaken!””

Maya shook her head.

“You haven't apologized once.””

Nicole looked away.

That was when Daniel noticed something else in the bag: a second receipt, smaller and partially hidden beneath the pharmacy purchase.

He pulled it free.

This one was from a parking garage downtown.

The date was three days earlier.

The time was 8:16 p.m.

Written across the top was the name of the Meridian Hotel, a place known for its private entrances and expensive suites.

Daniel read it silently.

Then he looked at Nicole.

“Why were you at the Meridian on Tuesday night?””

Her face drained of color.

Maya glanced at the receipt.

“Mom?””

Nicole snatched it from Daniel's hand.

“I met a friend.””

“What friend?”” Daniel asked.

“Someone you don't know.””

“What's his name?””

She froze.

The word his had slipped from Daniel's mouth almost casually, but Nicole's reaction gave it weight.

Maya's eyes widened.

“Dad, do you know something?””

“No,” he said, without looking away from Nicole.

“I'm trying to find out.””

Nicole crushed the receipt in her fist.

“You have no right to question every movement I make.””

“Then explain why you're hiding them.””

“I am not hiding anything!””

“Then why did you grab the paper?””

“Because you keep treating me like a criminal!””

Daniel held out his hand.

“Give me the receipt.””

“No.””

“Nicole.””

She stared at him for several seconds before throwing the crumpled paper onto the counter.

“You want to humiliate me? Go ahead. Call your lawyers.

Call your friends. Tell everyone your wife went to a hotel.””

Daniel picked up the receipt.

“I haven't said you did anything wrong.””

“You didn't have to.””

He studied her face.

“Were you meeting another man?””

Nicole's silence stretched.

Maya heard the refrigerator humming behind her. Somewhere upstairs, a clock chimed the quarter hour. Ordinary sounds in an extraordinary moment.

Then Nicole whispered, “You haven't been a husband to me in years.””

Daniel's expression tightened.

“That is not an answer.””

“It's the only one you're getting.””

Maya felt suddenly sick.

She had always thought of her parents' marriage as imperfect but solid. They argued about business, money, and Daniel's long working hours, but they still sat together at breakfast and exchanged anniversary gifts. Her father still kissed her mother's forehead when he left for work.

Had all of it been an act?

Daniel took a slow breath.

“I'm going to ask you one last time. Are you pregnant?””

Nicole looked at the test.

Then at the paper.

Then at Maya.

“I don't know.””

The admission landed harder than any accusation.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Then why did you put this test in front of Maya and tell her to explain herself?””

“Because I panicked!””

“About what?””

Nicole's eyes shone.

“Because if I am pregnant, everything changes.””

Maya swallowed.

“Why would everything change if you're pregnant?””

Nicole didn't respond.

Daniel glanced at the appointment confirmation again.

“Is the baby mine?””

Nicole's mouth trembled.

For the first time that evening, she looked truly afraid.

But before she could speak, a phone began vibrating inside the brown shopping bag.

Everyone stared at it.

Nicole reached for the bag.

Daniel got there first.

The screen lit up.

*UNKNOWN NUMBER: We need to talk before your husband finds out. The test isn't the only evidence.*

A second message appeared.

*And Nicole, if you tell him about the baby, I'll tell him who the father really is.*

Daniel read both messages.

Then he slowly turned the phone toward his wife.

“Who,” he asked, his voice dangerously calm, “is the father?””

Nicole stumbled backward until her hip struck the island.

Maya had never seen her mother look so small.

“Daniel, please,” Nicole whispered.

“You have to let me explain.””

He set the phone down.

“I'm listening.””

Nicole opened her mouth.

May you like

Nothing came out.

And then the doorbell rang.
