Chapter 6: The Name on the Birth Certificate
Nicole sat on the living room sofa with a glass of water trembling between her hands.
Michael stood near the fireplace, his face gray with exhaustion. Daniel remained by the window, looking out at the rain-soaked garden. Maya sat beside Noah, keeping one arm around his shoulders.
Nobody had spoken for nearly a minute.
Finally, Daniel turned.
“Start with the beginning.””
Nicole wiped her cheeks.
“I met Adrian at a charity event last year. He was helping organize a medical foundation. We started talking, and he told me about his work with fertility clinics.””
Daniel's expression didn't change.
“Why were you talking to him about fertility?””
“Because I thought I might want another child.””
“You're forty-six, Nicole. You have two children.””
“I know how old I am.””
“And you thought bringing another baby into this family without telling me was a good idea?””
She flinched.
“I wasn't planning to keep it from you forever.””
“Just long enough to make sure you could control the outcome?””
Nicole lowered her eyes.
Michael spoke from beside the fireplace.
“She wasn't sure the baby was yours.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Since last month.””
Daniel laughed once, his face full of disbelief.
“You knew my wife might be pregnant with another man's child, and you said nothing.””
Michael's shoulders sagged.
“I thought I could persuade her to tell you.””
“You could have told me yourself.””
“I know.””
“No, you don't. If you did, you wouldn't still be standing in my house asking me to understand.””
Michael looked down.
Nicole set the glass on the coffee table.
“Daniel, there is something else.””
He closed his eyes briefly.
“Of course there is.””
“Adrian and I weren't the only ones involved.””
Maya's fingers tightened around Noah's shoulder.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“What does that mean?””
Nicole glanced toward Michael.
He shook his head.
“Don't drag her into this.””
“It's already too late,” Nicole whispered.
“She's already involved.””
Maya stood.
“Stop talking about me as if I'm not here. What have I done?””
Nicole stared at her daughter, and for the first time that evening, genuine shame crossed her face.
“You haven't done anything wrong.””
“Then why did Uncle Michael say I knew what happened that night?””
Nicole's mouth trembled.
“Because you saw something.””
Maya's mind raced backward through the previous spring. The late-night argument. Her mother's tears.
Michael standing beside the desk. The words she had overheard.
You promised me you would never tell him.
She had assumed it was about an affair.
Now she wasn't sure of anything.
“What did I see?”” Maya asked.
Nicole folded her hands in her lap.
“Three months ago, you found me in the study with a medical file. You asked what it was. I told you it was a charity document.””
Maya frowned.
“I remember the file.””
“You took a photograph of the first page because you thought it was a document for your father's business.””
“I didn't know what it was.””
Nicole nodded.
“I know. But the page had a name on it.””
“What name?””
Nicole looked at Daniel.
Then at Michael.
Finally, she whispered, “Your name.””
Maya went still.
“My name was on a medical file?””
“Not just your name,” Michael said.
“Your date of birth. Your hospital. Your original birth records.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“Why would Maya's birth records be connected to our father's affair?””
Michael took a long breath.
“Because when your mother was pregnant with you, there was a mix-up at the hospital.””
Maya stared at him.
“What kind of mix-up?””
Michael's voice became unsteady.
“Two babies were born within minutes of each other. One was a girl. The other was a boy. The records were corrected the following morning, but the original paperwork was never destroyed.””
Daniel looked stunned.
“Are you saying Maya might not be our daughter?””
“No,” Nicole said quickly.
“That's not what I'm saying.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Nicole rose and walked toward the coffee table. She picked up a leather folder that had been tucked beneath a cushion.
“I had the records checked privately. I wanted to know whether the hospital had made another mistake.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Another mistake?””
Nicole opened the folder.
Inside were photocopies of medical records, an old hospital bracelet, and a birth certificate bearing Maya's name.
But the hospital bracelet had a different name printed on it.
*ELENA CARTER.*
Maya stared at the bracelet.
“Who is Elena?””
Michael answered quietly.
“The daughter your grandfather had with his mistress.””
Daniel recoiled.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No. You don't get to tell me that my daughter might be someone else's child because of a bracelet and a stack of photocopies.””
Nicole shook her head.
“I had a DNA test done.””
The words fell into the room like a dropped glass.
Maya looked at her mother.
“You tested my DNA?””
Nicole's tears spilled over.
“I used a hair from your brush. I didn't know how else to find out.””
Maya took a step backward.
“You did what?””
“I needed to know.””
“You could have asked me!””
“I was afraid you would refuse.””
“So you violated my privacy instead?””
Nicole reached toward her.
Maya stepped away.
“Don't touch me.””
Daniel's face had gone rigid.
“What did the test say?””
Nicole pulled out a sheet of paper.
“It said you and Daniel are biologically related.””
Daniel exhaled, relief and confusion battling across his face.
“Then what's the problem?””
Nicole's voice dropped.
“The report also showed that Maya has a close biological relative who isn't listed anywhere in our family records.””
Michael closed his eyes.
Daniel stared at the page.
“Who?””
Nicole turned it over.
A second report was clipped to the back. The name of the laboratory appeared at the top, followed by a genetic relationship analysis.
The result identified a close match.
*Paternal half-sibling.*
Daniel read the words slowly.
Then he looked at Michael.
“Who is Maya's half-sibling?””
Michael's jaw tightened.
“That's what I came here to tell you.””
He reached into his coat pocket and removed a small photograph.
It showed a young woman in her early twenties standing outside a university building. She had dark curls, warm brown eyes, and a small crescent-shaped birthmark just beneath her left ear.
Maya instinctively touched the same spot beneath her own ear.
The woman in the photograph looked almost exactly like her.
Daniel took the photograph.
“Who is this?””
Michael swallowed.
“Her name is Elena Reed. She's the daughter your father had before he married your mother.””
Daniel stared at the picture.
“That would make her my half-sister.””
“Yes.””
“And Maya's aunt.””
Michael nodded.
Maya felt dizzy.
“Why does she look like me?””
“Because you're related,” Michael said.
“Closely.””
Daniel studied the photograph again.
“Then why does this report say Maya has a paternal half-sibling?””
Nobody answered.
He looked at Nicole.
“Who else is in this family?””
Nicole's lips trembled.
“I don't know.””
“Stop lying!””
She recoiled.
Michael stepped forward.
“Daniel, there's something about the hospital records you need to understand. The baby born beside Maya wasn't Elena. Elena was already an adult when Maya was born.””
“Then who was the other baby?””
Michael looked at Maya.
“The other baby was a boy.””
Maya shook her head.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“Because the boy's birth certificate was issued under a different name. And the records show that he was later adopted by a family who lived less than twenty miles from here.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Who was he?””
Michael opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, the doorbell rang again.
Everyone turned toward the foyer.
A woman stood outside, holding a manila envelope against her chest. She was in her early twenties, with dark curls and a crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her left ear.
Maya stopped breathing.
The woman looked through the glass and met her eyes.
Then she lifted the envelope.
Inside it, visible through the open flap, was a birth certificate.
The name printed across the top was unmistakable.
*MAYA CARTER.*
But beneath it, in the space marked biological father, was a name that made Daniel stumble backward.
*MICHAEL CARTER.*
The woman pressed her palm against the glass.
May you like
And mouthed four words.
“Ask him about the twins.””
