Chapter 8: The Woman Who Changed Two Lives
Patricia Carter lived in a sprawling colonial house twenty minutes from Daniel's estate.
By eight the next morning, Daniel was standing on her front porch with Maya, Elena, and Michael behind him. Nicole had refused to come, claiming she was too emotionally exhausted to face another confrontation.
Daniel hadn't argued.
He'd left her with one instruction.
“Don't touch another document in this house.””
Patricia opened the door before he could knock.
She wore a cream cardigan, pearl earrings, and a smile that vanished the moment she saw Elena.
“Oh,” she said softly.
“So it's true.””
Daniel stepped inside.
“You knew she'd come.””
Patricia closed the door.
“I knew someone would eventually.””
“Then let's stop pretending. Who was the other twin?””
Patricia walked into the living room and sat in her favorite armchair.
“You've always been impatient, Daniel. Your father was the same way.””
“Don't talk about my father.””
She raised her eyebrows.
“Still protective of a man who lied to you?””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Tell me about the twins.””
Patricia folded her hands.
“Sarah Reed gave birth to a boy and a girl. Your mother was there because she was visiting a friend at the hospital. She learned about the babies and became convinced that the boy was connected to your father's affair.””
Elena stepped forward.
“My mother said she never met your mother.””
“Because they were never formally introduced.””
“Then how did your mother know about the babies?””
Patricia looked at Elena.
“Because I told her.””
Michael stood near the window, his arms crossed.
“You told her the boy had died.””
Patricia nodded.
“I thought I was protecting the family.””
“By lying to a mother about her child?”” Elena demanded.
Patricia's expression remained composed.
“By preventing a scandal that could have destroyed everything.””
Daniel took a step closer.
“You don't get to decide which lives are worth sacrificing for the family name.””
Patricia looked at him with something resembling pity.
“You sound just like your father.””
“Good. Then perhaps you'll finally tell me the truth.””
She rose and walked toward a cabinet.
From a locked drawer, she removed an old leather journal.
“This belonged to your mother. She gave it to me shortly before she died.””
Daniel reached for it.
Patricia held it back.
“There's something you should know before you read it. Your mother believed one of the twins had inherited a rare genetic condition from your father's side. She was convinced that if the child remained unidentified, he might never receive the medical care he needed.””
Elena frowned.
“Then why hide him?””
“Because your father had already died, and the family was fighting over his estate. Your mother believed the child would be used as a weapon by people who wanted money.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Who?””
Patricia didn't answer.
Michael did.
“Me.””
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked exhausted.
“After our father died, I was angry. I wanted a larger share of the estate. I thought the company belonged to me as much as it belonged to Daniel. When I learned about the child, I threatened to reveal the secret unless Mom gave me control over part of the family trust.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“You blackmailed our mother?””
Michael nodded.
“I was twenty-four and stupid. I convinced myself I deserved what you had.””
“And Patricia helped you?””
Patricia's mouth tightened.
“I helped prevent a legal war that would have torn the family apart.””
“You let a mother believe her child was dead,” Elena said.
“You let that child grow up without his twin. You let an entire family build their lives on a lie.””
Patricia's composure finally cracked.
“I did what I thought was necessary.””
Daniel took the journal from her.
“I'm done listening to people who think their intentions excuse what they've done.””
He opened the journal.
Most of the pages contained ordinary notes: household expenses, appointments, and family memories. But near the back, one entry had been underlined several times.
*November 14. Sarah's son was placed with a family under a false name. I pray Patricia keeps her promise.
If Daniel ever learns the truth, he must understand that the child was not abandoned by his mother. He was taken because I was afraid of what the truth would do to us.*
Beneath the entry was a name.
*Ethan Brooks.*
Maya stopped breathing.
“No,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“What is it?””
Maya stared at the page.
“Ethan is my boyfriend.””
Elena slowly turned toward her.
“Your boyfriend?””
Maya nodded, unable to speak.
She remembered Ethan's crooked smile, the way he always asked about her family, the way he sometimes went quiet whenever she mentioned her uncle. She remembered the first time she'd brought him home. Michael had been unusually friendly, asking Ethan questions about his parents and where he'd grown up.
At the time, Maya had thought it was ordinary curiosity.
Now every memory felt contaminated.
Daniel took a breath.
“Call him.””
Maya pulled out her phone.
Her fingers trembled as she pressed Ethan's name.
He answered on the second ring.
“Hey, May. Everything okay?””
She swallowed.
“Ethan, I need you to answer something honestly.””
His voice changed.
“What's wrong?””
“Do you know a woman named Sarah Reed?””
Silence.
Maya closed her eyes.
“Ethan?””
He exhaled slowly.
“Where are you?””
“I'm with my father.””
Another pause.
Then he said, “I think we need to talk in person.””
Daniel held out his hand for the phone.
“Ethan, this is Daniel Carter. I need you to come to Patricia's house.””
Ethan's voice became guarded.
“Why?””
“Because I believe your birth records were changed when you were a baby.””
The silence that followed was so complete that Maya could hear her own heartbeat.
Finally, Ethan spoke.
“My mother told me I was adopted.””
Daniel looked at the journal.
“Do you know her name?””
“Sarah.””
Elena covered her mouth.
Ethan continued.
“She told me I had a twin sister. She said the hospital told her the baby had died, but she never believed them. She spent years trying to find her.””
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Ethan,” Maya whispered, “your twin sister is here.””
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then Ethan said something that made Maya's blood run cold.
“Before I come over, there's something you need to know about Michael Carter.””
Michael's face drained of color.
Daniel turned toward him.
“What about Michael?””
Ethan's voice shook.
“He's the man who visited my mother every year on my birthday. He told her he was a family friend.””
Michael closed his eyes.
Ethan continued.
“But last year, my mother found a photograph of him with my birth records. She confronted him, and he told her that if she ever tried to contact me again, he'd make sure she lost everything.””
Elena began to cry.
“You threatened our mother?””
Michael shook his head.
“I never threatened Sarah.””
Ethan's voice hardened.
“Then explain why she was terrified of you.””
Michael looked at Daniel.
“I was trying to protect them.””
Daniel's expression turned icy.
“You've used that excuse for the last time.””
Patricia suddenly rose from her chair.
“Enough. All of you need to leave.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Not until we know everything.””
“You don't understand what you're doing,” she snapped.
“If this becomes public, the Carter company will be investigated. The trust could be frozen. Every decision your father made will be questioned.””
“Then let it be questioned.””
Patricia stepped closer.
“You would destroy your father's legacy for a boy you barely know?””
Daniel looked at Elena, then at Maya.
“No. I'd stop letting people use his legacy as an excuse to destroy lives.””
His phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of an old hospital record.
At the bottom was a signature that Daniel recognized immediately.
His own.
Beneath it was a line of text:
The second child was released to Daniel Carter's legal guardianship.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“I never signed this.””
Patricia's face turned white.
Michael looked at the document.
Then he whispered, “That's impossible.””
Elena leaned closer.
“Why?””
Michael swallowed.
“Because that signature belongs to Daniel's father.””
Daniel looked at him.
“My father died before these records were filed.””
Michael nodded slowly.
“Exactly.””
A second message arrived.
If you want to know who authorized the adoption, ask Nicole what happened nine months before Maya was born.
Daniel felt the room tilt.
May you like
Because suddenly, the question wasn't only where the twins had gone.
It was whether the family story he'd believed for nineteen years had ever been true at all.
