Chapter 4: The Night Nobody Was Supposed to Remember
Daniel stared at the phone as if his brother had just confessed to murder.
“What did you say?”” he demanded.
On the other end, Michael Carter exhaled shakily.
“You heard me. Maya knows what happened that night.””
Daniel turned toward his daughter.
Maya stood beside the staircase, one hand wrapped around Noah’s shoulder. Her face had gone pale, and her wide eyes moved between her father and the man standing on the porch.
“Dad?”” she whispered.
“What night is he talking about?””
Michael spoke again.
“Daniel, don't question her in front of Nicole. She'll twist everything.””
Nicole suddenly lunged for the phone.
“Give me that!””
Daniel pulled it away.
“You've said enough,” he told Michael.
“You're coming here. Now.””
“Daniel, wait—”
He ended the call.
For several seconds, the foyer remained silent except for the rain tapping against the windows.
Then Daniel looked at Maya.
“Have you ever been alone with Uncle Michael?””
Maya frowned.
“Of course. He's my uncle.””
“I'm asking whether anything happened between you two that you haven't told me about.””
Her face changed.
Not with guilt.
With hurt.
“Dad, what are you asking me?””
“I'm asking you a question.””
“And I'm asking why you're looking at me like that!””
Nicole pressed a hand against her chest.
“Daniel, this is exactly why I wanted to handle everything privately.””
He turned toward her.
“You wanted to accuse our daughter of being pregnant, hide a clinic appointment, and keep a man who claims to know the truth out of our house. That's not handling anything privately. That's controlling the evidence.””
Adrian Cole shifted uncomfortably near the open door.
“Perhaps I should leave.””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“You've already brought my family to the edge of a cliff. You're staying until I understand why.””
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“Then you should know that Nicole contacted me six weeks ago. She said she was frightened that something from the past was about to come out.””
“What past?””
“I don't know all of it.””
Nicole let out a bitter laugh.
“He knows exactly enough to destroy me.””
“Then explain it,” Daniel said.
She looked at him, her eyes glistening.
“I can't.””
“Can't or won't?””
Before Nicole could answer, Maya stepped forward.
“I know what night Uncle Michael means.””
Every head turned toward her.
Daniel's expression tightened.
“What do you know?””
Maya swallowed.
“Last spring, I woke up in the middle of the night. I heard voices downstairs. Mom was arguing with Uncle Michael in the study.””
Nicole shook her head.
“Maya, don't.””
“You told him he couldn't keep doing this. You said Dad would never forgive you if he found out.””
Daniel felt a cold sensation spread through his chest.
“What was Michael doing here in the middle of the night?””
“I don't know,” Maya replied.
“I went downstairs because I thought someone had broken in. When I reached the study, Uncle Michael was standing beside the desk. Mom was crying.””
“What did you hear?””
Maya looked at her mother.
“She said, ‘You promised me you would never tell him.’”
Nicole's lips parted.
Daniel waited.
“And what did Michael say?””
Maya's voice dropped.
“He said, ‘You promised me something, too.’”
Adrian looked sharply at Nicole.
“You told me that argument never happened.””
Nicole snapped toward him.
“Stay out of this!””
Daniel lifted his hand.
“Enough. Maya, what happened after that?””
“I went back upstairs. The next morning, Mom told me I must have been dreaming because Uncle Michael hadn't visited.””
Daniel stared at his wife.
“You told our daughter she imagined seeing your brother?””
“I was trying to protect her!””
“From what?””
Nicole's eyes filled with tears.
“From the truth.””
Daniel gave a hollow laugh.
“That's convenient. Everyone in this house seems to know the truth except me.””
Noah tugged at Maya's sleeve.
“Can we go upstairs?””
Maya crouched beside him.
“Of course, sweetheart.””
But before she could stand, Noah spoke again.
“Wait. I remember something, too.””
Nicole closed her eyes.
“Noah, please.””
The boy looked at his father.
“Uncle Michael came to my room that night.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“He said he was looking for his car keys. I told him they were on the table downstairs, but he asked me if I remembered seeing him that evening.””
Maya stared at her brother.
“Why didn't you tell us?””
“I thought it was a game.””
Daniel knelt in front of him.
“What did you say?””
Noah's lower lip trembled.
“I told him I saw him talking to Mom. Then he gave me twenty dollars and said not to tell anyone because it was a surprise.””
Daniel rose slowly.
His face had become frighteningly calm.
“Michael bribed my eight-year-old son to keep quiet?””
Nicole covered her mouth.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She looked toward Adrian.
He shook his head.
“Don't involve me in another lie, Nicole.””
Her expression hardened.
“You were happy enough to be involved when you thought you might get what you wanted.””
Adrian flinched.
Daniel noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked at the floor.
“Nicole told me she wanted to leave you. She said she had been unhappy for years. I believed her.””
“And the baby?””
“I don't know whether the baby is mine.””
Daniel took a step toward him.
“You're standing in my house, talking about my wife and a possible child as if you're discussing a business deal.””
Adrian held his ground, though his voice shook.
“Because she told me this might be my child.””
The words hit Daniel harder than the earlier accusation.
He looked at Nicole.
“Is that why you bought the test?””
Nicole whispered, “Yes.””
“And you thought blaming Maya would protect you?””
“No. I panicked when I found the test in the bathroom.””
“Whose test was it?””
Nicole didn't answer.
Daniel reached into the shopping bag and pulled out the original receipt again.
The purchase had been made yesterday afternoon. But the photograph Adrian had shown him had been taken earlier that evening.
He looked at the test on the counter.
Then at the photograph.
Then at his wife.
“You didn't find that test,” he said slowly.
“You placed it there.””
Nicole shook her head violently.
“No!””
“The photograph shows your hand beside it. The receipt proves you bought one. And you knew exactly where it would be found.””
“I was going to tell you!””
“When?””
Her shoulders began to shake.
“When I knew for certain.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“About the pregnancy or about the father?””
Nicole broke down.
For a moment, Maya almost moved toward her. Old habits were difficult to silence. Even after the accusations, even after the humiliation, a part of Maya still wanted to comfort her mother.
Then she remembered the way Nicole had looked at her when Daniel first entered the kitchen.
Like Maya was a problem to be solved.
Like ruining her daughter's reputation was preferable to facing her own mistakes.
Maya stayed where she was.
Daniel turned to Adrian.
“You said there was more in the folder.””
Adrian hesitated.
Then he removed a sealed envelope.
“Michael gave this to me three days ago. He said that if Nicole refused to tell you the truth, I should.””
Nicole stumbled forward.
“Adrian, don't!””
He handed it to Daniel.
Inside was a single photograph, faded at the edges.
It showed Daniel and Michael standing outside a hospital room twenty years earlier. Daniel held a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket. Michael stood beside him, smiling at the camera.
On the back, someone had written a date.
And beneath it, in Nicole's handwriting, were six words.
One day, he'll learn which son is his.
Daniel read the sentence.
Then he looked at Noah.
Then Maya.
His children.
His family.
The people he had spent his life protecting.
“What does this mean?”” he whispered.
Nicole's face crumpled.
And before anyone could answer, the front door opened behind them.
Michael Carter walked inside, soaked from the rain.
He looked at the photograph in Daniel's hand.
Then at Nicole.
“You weren't supposed to show him that,” Michael said.
Daniel slowly turned.
“Tell me the truth, Michael.””
His brother's eyes shifted toward Maya.
“I can't.””
“Why?””
May you like
Michael's face twisted with guilt.
“Because if I tell you what happened twenty years ago, you'll never look at either of your children the same way again.””
