Chapter 8: The Mother’s Confession
Evelyn Bennett arrived at Rachel's house before sunrise.
Rachel knew immediately.
People who had nothing to hide didn't show up looking terrified.
Evelyn stood at the doorway with tears in her eyes.
"I need to tell you something.""
Rachel stepped aside.
"Come in.""
Grant appeared from the hallway.
The moment he saw his mother, his expression hardened.
"Did you know?""
Evelyn looked at him.
"Yes.""
The answer was immediate.
Grant laughed once.
A painful sound.
"At least you're honest now.""
Evelyn looked down.
"I should have been honest years ago.""
Rachel watched them.
A mother and son.
Both carrying the weight of a secret.
"Tell us everything," Grant said.
Evelyn sat.
"I met Adrian when I was desperate.""
Grant said nothing.
"I had suffered multiple miscarriages. Your father blamed himself. I blamed myself.""
She looked at him.
"We wanted a child more than anything.""
Rachel listened quietly.
Because she understood that desire.
The dream of a family.
The desperation.
The pain.
"But Adrian wasn't helping people," Evelyn continued.
"He was collecting information.""
Grant looked angry.
"Why didn't you stop him?""
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"Because I didn't know at first.""
"And later?""
She looked away.
"Later, I was afraid.""
Rachel felt disappointment.
Not surprise.
Fear had controlled this family for generations.
Evelyn continued.
"When you were born, Charles was different.""
Grant frowned.
"Different how?""
"He became obsessed with proving you were his.""
Rachel felt sick.
"Because he suspected?""
Evelyn nodded.
"Adrian told him.""
Grant went still.
"He told my father?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because Adrian wanted to watch what happened.""
The room became silent.
Evelyn wiped her tears.
"Charles spent years trying to prove you belonged to him.""
Grant whispered:
"That's why he was obsessed with blood.""
"Yes.""
Rachel looked at Grant.
The cruelty of it was overwhelming.
He had spent his entire life trying to prove something that was never his to prove.
Evelyn reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
"I kept this.""
Grant stared.
"What is it?""
"Your original birth records.""
He opened it.
Rachel watched his eyes move across the page.
Then his face changed.
"What?""
Grant handed it to her.
Rachel read.
Biological father: Adrian Vale.
The room went quiet.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"I wanted to tell you.""
Grant looked at her.
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
"Why?""
Evelyn cried silently.
"Because Charles threatened to leave. He said if anyone knew, our family would be destroyed.""
Grant looked at her.
"It was already destroyed.""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"I know.""
Rachel thought about Maddie.
How many times had adults chosen fear over children?
Too many.
Then Grant noticed something.
"Wait.""
He looked at the document.
"This is not the same as the clinic file.""
Rachel looked closer.
He was right.
The dates were different.
The records had been modified.
Again.
Grant looked at his mother.
"You changed it.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"No.""
"Then who?""
No one answered.
Until Rachel remembered.
Claire Morgan.
The woman who had called.
She picked up her phone.
The message was still there.
Call me when you are ready.
Rachel dialed.
Claire answered immediately.
"I knew you would call.""
Rachel's voice was cold.
"Who changed Maddie's records?""
Claire hesitated.
Then:
"Your mother-in-law.""
Grant looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn's face went white.
"No.""
Rachel stared.
"Claire, are you sure?""
"I saw her.""
Evelyn stood.
"That's impossible.""
Claire continued.
"She came to the clinic six years ago.""
Rachel looked at Evelyn.
"Why?""
The answer came.
"Because she knew Adrian's donor program was still active.""
Grant stepped back.
"What?""
Claire's voice lowered.
"She wasn't trying to hide Maddie's father.""
A pause.
"She was trying to hide yours.""
Everyone froze.
Rachel looked at Grant.
"What does that mean?""
Claire whispered:
"Grant Bennett was never supposed to know Adrian Vale was his father.""
Later that day, Rachel confronted Evelyn.
Not with anger.
With exhaustion.
"Why?""
Evelyn cried.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"That Adrian would come back.""
Rachel stared.
"He's back now.""
"I know.""
"And you still lied.""
Evelyn looked broken.
"I thought if Grant believed Charles was his father, he would have a normal life.""
Rachel shook her head.
"You created the exact thing you feared.""
Evelyn looked confused.
"What?""
"A man who believed blood was everything.""
The words hurt because they were true.
Then Grant walked in.
He had been standing outside.
Listening.
His mother looked at him.
"Grant.""
He shook his head.
"I don't know who I am anymore.""
Rachel stepped closer.
He looked at her.
"I spent my whole life afraid I wasn't enough.""
A tear fell.
"And I made my daughter feel the same thing.""
Rachel didn't answer.
Because there was nothing she could say.
Then Grant's phone rang.
Another unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke.
Grant's face changed.
"Who is this?""
A pause.
Then:
"Charles?""
Rachel froze.
Grant's father was dead.
Had been dead for years.
But the voice on the phone was unmistakable.
Grant slowly raised his eyes.
"He says he has proof.""
Rachel felt a chill.
"Proof of what?""
Grant listened.
May you like
Then whispered:
"That Adrian Vale isn't my real father either.""
