The Secret He Made Her Keep / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7: The Father She Never Knew

Rachel read the document three times.

Each time, the words remained the same.

Donor: Adrian Vale.

But beneath it was another line.

Secondary genetic contributor: Grant Bennett.

Her mind struggled to understand what she was seeing.

"No.""

Grant's voice came out like a whisper.

"No, that's impossible.""

Adrian watched him carefully.

"You were never meant to see this.""

Rachel looked up sharply.

"What does that mean?""

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

That bothered her more than anything.

Because people who lied usually rushed to explain.

People who knew the truth usually waited.

Grant grabbed the paper.

"Explain.""

Adrian leaned back.

"Your fertility treatment was not the first time my research involved the Bennett family.""

Rachel felt sick.

"Research.""

She hated that word.

Every time Adrian used it, he turned human lives into experiments.

"My father was your subject," Grant said.

"Yes.""

"My mother was your subject.""

"Yes.""

"And now Maddie?""

Adrian looked at him.

"No.""

The answer surprised everyone.

"No?""

Adrian shook his head.

"Maddie was not my experiment.""

Rachel narrowed her eyes.

"Then what was she?""

Adrian looked toward the window.

"A mistake.""

The word landed heavily.

Grant stepped forward.

"She's not a mistake.""

Adrian looked at him.

"That is the first thing you've said today that proves you are not like me.""

Rachel watched Grant carefully.

Something was changing.

Not because Adrian was convincing him.

Because Grant was finally seeing the difference between them.

One man created children to prove a theory.

The other had almost abandoned one because he was afraid.

The irony was brutal.

"Tell us everything," Rachel said.

Adrian looked at her.

"You really want to know?""

"Yes.""

"Even if it destroys the family you thought you had?""

Rachel didn't hesitate.

"That family was already destroyed.""

For the first time, Adrian looked almost impressed.

"You are stronger than Charles Bennett ever believed.""

Grant stiffened.

"Don't talk about him.""

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Why? Because you know the truth now?""

Grant's fists tightened.

"Tell me about Maddie.""

Adrian sighed.

"Five years ago, when you and Rachel came to the clinic, your case was assigned through a private program.""

Rachel frowned.

"We chose a donor.""

"You chose a profile.""

The distinction made her uncomfortable.

Adrian continued.

"The records were altered after the selection.""

Grant looked at the document.

"So you replaced the donor.""

"Yes.""

Rachel's anger exploded.

"You used our child.""

Adrian looked at her.

"No.""

"Don't lie.""

"I didn't create Maddie.""

His voice became quieter.

"She was created by two people who loved each other.""

Rachel froze.

Adrian continued.

"I only changed the paperwork.""

Grant looked confused.

"Then why?""

Adrian looked at him.

"Because I wanted to know if my theory was wrong.""

"What theory?""

"That people always return to blood.""

Rachel felt a chill.

"You used my daughter to prove something?""

"No.""

Adrian's eyes moved toward Grant.

"I used you.""

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Grant looked like he had been punched.

"Me?""

"Yes.""

Adrian folded his hands.

"I wanted to know if a child without your DNA could still become your child.""

Rachel looked at Grant.

Because she already knew the answer.

For five years, Maddie had been his daughter.

Until one moment.

One accusation.

One fear.

Grant looked down.

"I failed.""

Adrian tilted his head.

"Yes.""

The agreement hurt more than an insult.

Grant looked away.

"But I can change.""

Adrian smiled slightly.

"Can you?""

Grant looked at him.

"I have to.""

"Why?""

"Because she deserves better than the man I was.""

Rachel felt something tighten in her chest.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But maybe the beginning of accountability.

Then Adrian reached into another folder.

"There is another problem.""

Rachel immediately became alert.

"What problem?""

Adrian placed several pages on the table.

"The clinic investigation will become public soon.""

Grant picked up the documents.

"What are these?""

"Names.""

Rachel looked over.

Twenty-three children.

Twenty-three families.

But one name was highlighted.

Maddie Bennett.

Rachel looked confused.

"Why is she highlighted?""

Adrian's expression changed.

"Because she is different.""

Grant looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Adrian didn't answer.

Rachel felt fear rising.

"Tell us.""

Adrian looked directly at her.

"Maddie's genetic profile doesn't match the others.""

Grant stared.

"But you said—"

"I said the paperwork was changed.""

He pointed at the report.

"But whoever changed it made another mistake.""

Rachel's heart pounded.

"What mistake?""

Adrian looked at Grant.

"The person who altered Maddie's file left behind evidence.""

"What evidence?""

Adrian pushed forward another page.

A signature.

Rachel recognized it immediately.

She had seen it on old family documents.

Grant saw it too.

His face became pale.

"No.""

Rachel looked at him.

"What?""

Grant whispered:

"My father.""

That night, Rachel couldn't sleep.

The truth kept moving.

Every answer created another question.

Charles Bennett.

Adrian Vale.

Evelyn.

Grant.

The entire family was built on secrets.

She walked downstairs and found Grant sitting alone.

The lights were off.

"You should sleep.""

He didn't look up.

"I don't think I know how anymore.""

Rachel stayed standing.

For a moment, she almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

"Grant.""

He looked at her.

"I remember the first time I held Maddie.""

Rachel listened.

"I was terrified.""

His voice cracked.

"I thought I would be a terrible father.""

Rachel sat across from him.

"But you weren't.""

He looked at her.

"Until I was.""

The honesty hurt.

"I keep thinking about her face.""

Rachel looked down.

"When she asked if I stopped loving her.""

Grant closed his eyes.

"I'll never forget that.""

A long silence passed.

Then he said:

"I want to fix it.""

Rachel looked at him.

"You can't erase it.""

"I know.""

"You can't make her forget.""

"I know.""

"Then what can you do?""

Grant swallowed.

"Be there.""

Rachel looked away.

It was the simplest answer.

And maybe the hardest.

Before she could respond, her phone rang.

The number was unknown.

She answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

"Is this Rachel Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Claire Morgan.""

Rachel frowned.

"Who are you?""

A pause.

Then:

"I was one of Adrian Vale's patients.""

Rachel's grip tightened.

"Why are you calling me?""

The woman's voice trembled.

"Because I know who changed Maddie's records.""

Rachel stood.

"Who?""

Silence.

Then Claire whispered:

"It wasn't Adrian.""

Rachel froze.

"Then who was it?""

May you like

The answer came quietly.

"The person who raised your husband.""
