The Secret He Made Her Keep / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Photograph In The Attic

Rachel didn't sleep that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Evelyn's expression.

Not anger.

Not shame.

Fear.

Real fear.

Grant had left after his mother refused to explain anything.

Rachel expected him to call.

He didn't.

By morning, she understood something.

Grant wasn't avoiding the truth.

He was hiding from it.

Maddie sat at the breakfast table eating cereal while watching cartoons.

Rachel smiled at her.

She tried to make everything normal.

But nothing felt normal anymore.

A five-year-old child was at the center of a secret that had existed long before she was born.

At noon, Evelyn arrived alone.

Rachel almost didn't open the door.

But she did.

The older woman looked exhausted.

"I owe you an explanation.""

Rachel stepped aside.

"You owe Maddie one.""

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"I know.""

They sat in the living room.

For the first time in years, there was no hostility between them.

Only fear.

"Tell me about Adrian Vale.""

Evelyn looked at her hands.

"He was a brilliant doctor.""

"Was?""

"Yes.""

"What happened?""

Evelyn stared toward the window.

"My husband hated him.""

Rachel frowned.

"Why?""

"Because Adrian knew things about our family.""

"What things?""

Evelyn didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

"Things about Grant.""

Rachel felt her heartbeat increase.

"What about him?""

Evelyn reached into her purse.

She pulled out an old photograph.

The picture was faded.

It showed three people standing outside a building.

A young Evelyn.

A man Rachel assumed was Grant's father.

And a younger Adrian Vale.

Rachel looked closer.

Then she noticed something.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.

July 1989.

The Bennett Family Fertility Center.

Rachel looked up.

"Your family knew him.""

Evelyn nodded.

"Everyone thought Adrian was just a doctor.""

"But he wasn't?""

Evelyn's silence answered.

Rachel stood.

"Where did you get this?""

"From my husband's old office.""

"Why keep it?""

Evelyn looked ashamed.

"Because some secrets are easier to hide than face.""

Rachel felt anger rising.

"That's what all of you do, isn't it?""

Evelyn looked at her.

"You hide.""

Rachel pointed upstairs.

"My daughter has spent her entire life being loved by a man who abandoned her because everyone around him taught him blood mattered more than family.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Rachel's voice cracked.

"You raised him.""

The words hit harder than shouting.

Evelyn looked down.

"I thought I was protecting him.""

Rachel laughed bitterly.

"From what?""

Evelyn whispered:

"From the truth about who his father really was.""

Rachel froze.

"What does that mean?""

Before Evelyn could answer, the front door opened.

Grant walked in.

He had heard the last sentence.

"What did you say?""

Evelyn looked terrified.

"Grant...""

"No.""

He stepped closer.

"Tell me.""

Rachel watched mother and son face each other.

For years, Grant had demanded honesty from her.

Now honesty had finally come for him.

Evelyn stood.

"Your father wasn't who you thought he was.""

Grant shook his head.

"Don't.""

"He lied to you.""

"Stop.""

"He lied about your birth.""

The room went silent.

Rachel looked at Grant.

The same man who had questioned whether Maddie belonged to him.

Now he was hearing that his own identity was uncertain.

Grant's voice became smaller.

"What are you saying?""

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm saying Adrian Vale wasn't just your doctor.""

Grant stared.

"What?""

"He was involved with our family before you were born.""

Rachel looked at the photograph again.

A horrible thought formed.

"Grant...""

He looked at her.

She held up the photograph.

"Why was Maddie's fertility doctor standing beside your mother decades before you were even grown?""

Grant stared at the image.

His face changed.

For once, he had no defense.

No accusation.

No anger.

Only fear.

Then his phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Grant answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

Rachel couldn't hear everything.

Only Grant's reaction.

His face became completely pale.

"That's impossible.""

A pause.

Then:

"Who told you that?""

Another pause.

Grant slowly looked at Rachel.

The call ended.

"What happened?"" she asked.

Grant didn't respond.

"Grant.""

He looked at the photograph.

Then at her.

"The clinic wasn't trying to find Maddie's donor.""

Rachel felt cold.

"What were they trying to find?""

Grant's hands began shaking.

"The other children.""

"Why?""

He swallowed.

"Because they discovered something.""

"What?""

Grant looked toward the door.

Like he expected someone to appear.

Then he whispered:

"Adrian Vale wasn't a donor.""

Rachel stared.

"Then what was he?""

Grant looked at the photograph one more time.

May you like

And the answer destroyed the last piece of certainty they had.

"He was my biological father.""
