Chapter 2: The Name On The Report
Rachel spent the entire night staring at the email.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
Maddie slept in the next room, unaware that the adults around her had created a storm she never asked for.
Rachel sat at the kitchen table with the old fertility documents spread in front of her.
The paperwork was still there.
The donor information.
The consent forms.
Grant's signature.
Every page reminded her of a man who had once chosen love over pride.
She wondered when he stopped being that person.
The next morning, she went to the clinic alone.
Dr. Laura Hayes, the fertility specialist who had handled their case five years earlier, looked nervous.
That scared Rachel more than the email.
Doctors were trained to stay calm.
But Laura kept folding her hands together.
"Rachel, I want you to understand something.""
Rachel sat down.
"Please just tell me.""
Laura took a breath.
"The clinic discovered irregularities during a recent audit.""
"What kind of irregularities?""
"Patient records were altered.""
Rachel felt her chest tighten.
"Altered by who?""
Laura looked away.
"We don't know yet.""
Rachel leaned forward.
"What does that have to do with Maddie?""
The doctor placed a folder on the table.
"Last month, a child from another family underwent genetic testing. The results showed unexpected biological connections to other donor-conceived children.""
Rachel opened the folder.
Inside were reports.
Names.
Numbers.
DNA matches.
She looked confused.
"I don't understand.""
Laura pointed to the documents.
"Several children who were supposedly conceived from different donors are genetically related.""
Rachel stared at the page.
"How many?""
"At least twenty-three.""
The room seemed to spin.
"Twenty-three children?""
"Yes.""
Rachel swallowed.
"Who is the donor?""
Laura hesitated.
"We believe the records may have been manipulated by a former physician.""
Rachel looked up.
"Who?""
Laura's expression changed.
"Dr. Adrian Vale.""
The name meant nothing to Rachel.
But the way Laura said it made her uneasy.
"Was he involved with our case?""
Laura nodded slowly.
"He was a senior reproductive specialist at the clinic during that period.""
Rachel looked down at Maddie's paperwork.
"Why wasn't his name anywhere?""
"Because he wasn't listed as the physician assigned to your treatment.""
A terrible thought entered Rachel's mind.
"Then why do you look like you already know the answer?""
Laura didn't respond.
That silence told Rachel everything.
When Rachel left the clinic, she called Grant.
He didn't answer.
She called again.
Nothing.
Finally, she sent a message.
We need to talk. It’s about Maddie.
He replied ten minutes later.
What now?
Rachel stared at the words.
Not Are you okay?
Not What happened?
What now?
She typed back.
The clinic found a problem with the donor records.
The reply came quickly.
Don’t involve my family.
Rachel froze.
She read the message again.
Then another message appeared.
You already ruined enough.
Something inside her went numb.
She put the phone down.
For five years, she had protected him.
And he still thought she was the enemy.
That evening, Grant came to the house.
Rachel opened the door but didn't invite him in.
He looked tired.
Angry.
Defensive.
"I got your message.""
Rachel folded her arms.
"The clinic made a discovery.""
"I don't care.""
The answer shocked her.
"You don't care about Maddie's biological history?""
Grant looked away.
"Maddie is not my daughter anymore.""
Rachel felt like she couldn't breathe.
"You really believe that?""
"I heard what I heard.""
"No. You heard what you wanted to hear.""
Grant's jaw tightened.
"Rachel, don't do this.""
"Do what?""
"Make me the villain.""
She stared at him.
"You did that yourself.""
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Rachel handed him the folder.
"Read it.""
Grant looked down.
"What is this?""
"Something that might explain everything.""
He opened the folder.
His eyes moved across the page.
At first, there was confusion.
Then concern.
Then something else.
Fear.
Rachel noticed.
"You know that name.""
Grant looked up.
"What name?""
"Adrian Vale.""
The color left his face.
"I don't know him.""
Rachel immediately knew he was lying.
Because Grant had always been terrible at lying.
"Grant.""
He closed the folder.
"I said I don't know him.""
Before Rachel could respond, a car pulled into the driveway.
Evelyn stepped out.
Rachel stared.
"Your mother?""
Grant looked surprised.
"I didn't tell her.""
But Evelyn was already walking toward them.
She looked at the folder in Grant's hand.
Then at Rachel.
And something changed in her expression.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
"Where did you get that name?""
Rachel went still.
"What?""
Evelyn's eyes remained fixed on the folder.
"Adrian Vale.""
The way she said it wasn't like hearing a stranger's name.
It was like hearing a ghost.
Grant stepped closer.
"Mom.""
Evelyn ignored him.
Rachel looked between them.
"Why do you know him?""
No one answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"Because Adrian Vale was supposed to be dead.""
Rachel felt a chill.
"What?""
Evelyn looked at Grant.
And for the first time, Rachel saw fear in his mother's eyes.
"Your father buried that secret thirty years ago.""
Grant stepped back.
"Mom, stop.""
But Evelyn continued.
"Because if Adrian Vale is involved with that child...""
May you like
She looked at Rachel.
"...then Maddie is not the only person connected to him.""
