The Secret He Made Her Keep / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Blood He Denied

Rachel didn't speak.

She couldn't.

The words sat between them like something alive.

Adrian Vale was Grant's biological father.

The same man whose name had appeared in Maddie's fertility records.

The same man who had been connected to more than twenty donor-conceived children.

The same man Grant claimed he didn't know.

Rachel looked at her husband.

No.

Not her husband.

She wasn't sure what he was anymore.

A stranger.

A man who had spent days trying to erase his daughter because she wasn't connected to him by blood.

And now the truth had arrived with a cruel kind of irony.

The blood he worshipped had always been connected to a man he feared.

Grant slowly lowered himself onto the couch.

"I don't understand.""

Evelyn stood near the window, looking older than she had hours ago.

"I know.""

"No.""

Grant shook his head.

"You don't understand. You knew?""

His voice rose.

"You knew this whole time?""

Evelyn turned around.

"I knew something was wrong.""

"Something?""

Grant laughed.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"My entire life might be a lie, and you knew something was wrong?""

Rachel watched his anger move from her to his mother.

For years, Grant had carried the same rage.

The same need to find someone responsible for his pain.

Now he finally had someone else to blame.

Evelyn sat down.

"When you were born, your father was obsessed with creating the perfect family.""

Rachel frowned.

"Your father?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Charles Bennett.""

She looked at Grant.

"He couldn't accept that we had struggled with fertility.""

Grant stared.

"Mom.""

"He blamed himself.""

Rachel almost laughed.

The irony was unbearable.

The same shame.

The same fear.

The same obsession with proving masculinity.

It had traveled through generations.

"What did Charles do?"" Grant asked.

Evelyn's fingers tightened around her purse.

"He found Adrian Vale.""

The room became silent.

"At first, I thought he was helping us.""

She looked away.

"He promised he could fix everything.""

Rachel felt sick.

"Fix everything?""

Evelyn nodded.

"He said he could give us a child.""

Grant's face changed.

"Me.""

"Yes.""

"Using donor conception?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Rachel felt a chill.

The family secret wasn't beginning with Maddie.

It had begun decades earlier.

Grant stood suddenly.

"So my father knew?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Yes.""

"And he lied to me?""

"Yes.""

Grant paced across the room.

"He spent my whole life telling me blood was everything.""

His voice cracked.

"And he wasn't even my father.""

Rachel watched him struggle.

Part of her wanted to feel sympathy.

Another part remembered Maddie's confused face.

The moment she asked if Daddy stopped loving her.

"Grant.""

He stopped.

Rachel spoke carefully.

"Do you understand now?""

He looked at her.

"Understand what?""

"What you did.""

His expression hardened.

"I know what I did.""

"No.""

Rachel shook her head.

"You don't.""

She pointed toward the hallway.

"You thought biology was the thing that made someone family.""

Grant looked down.

"Rachel...""

"You looked at Maddie and saw a stranger because her DNA wasn't yours.""

Her voice trembled.

"But she spent five years calling you Daddy.""

Grant closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was real.

For the first time, Rachel saw regret.

But regret wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

A phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

It was Grant's phone.

The message came from the fertility clinic.

URGENT: We need you and Rachel to attend a meeting regarding the genetic investigation.

Grant stared at the screen.

Rachel noticed something.

"What?""

He didn't answer.

"What is it?""

Grant handed her the phone.

Rachel read the message.

Then she saw the final line.

Additional genetic testing has identified a possible biological relationship between you and several children connected to Dr. Adrian Vale.

Her hands went cold.

Several children.

Not just Maddie.

Grant wasn't only connected to Adrian Vale.

He was connected to Adrian's other children.

The same children the clinic had discovered.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"No.""

Rachel looked at her.

"You knew something else.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"I didn't.""

But her eyes said otherwise.

Rachel stepped closer.

"What aren't you telling us?""

Evelyn looked toward the old photograph.

Then whispered:

"Adrian Vale didn't just work with our family.""

A pause.

"He studied it.""

Two days later, Rachel and Grant sat across from the clinic investigators.

They sat separately.

That hurt more than Rachel expected.

Five years ago, they would have held hands.

Now there was an empty space between them.

Dr. Laura Hayes placed several documents on the table.

"We have confirmed that the donor records from that period were manipulated.""

Grant stared.

"By Adrian.""

"Yes.""

Rachel asked:

"Why?""

Laura hesitated.

"That's what we're trying to determine.""

Grant leaned forward.

"Tell us.""

The doctor opened a file.

"Adrian Vale was removed from medical practice years ago after concerns about unethical research.""

"What kind of research?"" Rachel asked.

Laura looked uncomfortable.

"Genetic inheritance.""

Grant frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"He believed biological compatibility could predict human behavior, intelligence, health outcomes...""

Rachel felt disgust.

"He was experimenting.""

Laura nodded.

"We believe he used fertility treatments to create genetic links between families without consent.""

Silence.

Grant looked sick.

"So the children...""

"Were not connected by accident.""

Rachel felt tears burn her eyes.

Twenty-three children.

Twenty-three families.

All connected by one man's obsession.

Grant stared at the documents.

"Why would he do this?""

No one answered.

Then Laura placed another paper in front of him.

"Because of this.""

Grant looked down.

His face changed.

"What is it?""

Rachel leaned closer.

It was an old medical report.

The patient name had been partially covered.

But the date was visible.

1989.

The same year on the photograph.

Grant read the information.

Then he whispered:

"That's impossible.""

Rachel looked at him.

"What?""

He pushed the paper toward her.

At the top was a name.

CHARLES BENNETT.

Rachel's heart stopped.

Grant's father.

The report wasn't about fertility treatment.

It was about genetics.

And underneath the notes was one sentence:

Patient shows inherited markers requiring further study.

Grant stood.

"No.""

Laura looked at him.

"Mr. Bennett...""

"My father wasn't Adrian's patient.""

Rachel looked at the report.

"Maybe he was.""

Grant shook his head.

"I spent my whole life believing my father was...""

He stopped.

Because he couldn't finish the sentence.

Rachel understood.

He believed his father was his father.

The thing he had used to judge himself.

The thing he had used to judge Maddie.

Suddenly, his entire identity was falling apart.

Then Laura spoke quietly.

"There is one more thing.""

Everyone looked at her.

"We found a second set of records.""

Rachel felt dread.

"About what?""

Laura opened another folder.

"This one was hidden.""

She placed the file on the table.

The name on the cover made Rachel freeze.

GRANT BENNETT.

Rachel looked at him.

"Why would there be a hidden file about you?""

Grant didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

May you like

The question wasn't why the file existed.

The question was what was inside.
