Chapter 9: The Last Person We Suspected
The photograph shook in Daniel’s hand.
I watched his face carefully.
I knew that expression.
The same expression from the wedding.
The same silence before something painful.
“Daniel.””
He did not answer.
“Who is it?””
Slowly, he looked up.
“It’s Mark.””
I frowned.
“Mark?””
“My best man.””
I felt confused.
“The man from the wedding?””
He nodded.
The same man who had stood beside Daniel when Lauren walked down the aisle.
The same man who had watched everything happen.
The same man who had comforted Daniel afterward.
“No,” I whispered.
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
“I know.””
Robert stood.
“Who is Mark?””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“My closest friend.””
That was the moment everything became clear.
Not because we understood.
Because we realized how much we didn’t understand.
Mark had been there.
At the wedding.
At the company meetings.
At family dinners.
He had access to Daniel’s life.
He knew where Daniel was.
He knew where I was.
And he had known Lauren.
“How?”” I asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Robert looked terrified.
“You need to find out quickly.””
We returned home the next day.
Daniel did not call Mark.
He did not confront him.
Instead, he watched.
For two days, Daniel studied every message.
Every company record.
Every conversation.
Then he found something.
A payment.
Small.
Almost invisible.
From Ethan’s company.
To Mark’s personal account.
“He worked with them.””
I stared at the document.
“Your best friend?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“I don’t understand.””
That was the hardest part.
Betrayal hurts most when it comes from someone who knows exactly how much you trust them.
That evening, Mark called.
Daniel answered on speaker.
“Hey, man.””
Mark sounded normal.
Too normal.
“You disappeared.””
Daniel leaned back.
“I’ve been busy.””
A pause.
“Everything okay?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then said:
“Why did Ethan Whitmore pay you?””
Silence.
The kind of silence that reveals everything.
Mark finally spoke.
“Daniel.””
“Answer me.””
Another pause.
Then:
“I can explain.””
My stomach dropped.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“You knew.””
“Not everything.””
“You knew Lauren was targeting me.””
Mark sighed.
“I was trying to stop it.””
Daniel laughed without humor.
“You helped her.””
“No.””
Mark’s voice became desperate.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Silence.
Then Mark said:
“Your father asked me to watch over you.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“When I was twenty-two, your dad helped my family. He knew I would protect you.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was listening carefully.
“But then Ethan found me.””
Mark continued.
“He threatened me.””
“With what?””
“My sister.””
The room became quiet.
Mark’s voice cracked.
“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would destroy her life.””
Daniel looked away.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I could control it.””
“And Lauren?””
“I thought she was just trying to get money.””
Daniel stood.
“But my father died.””
Mark went silent.
Then whispered:
“I know.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“You know how he died?””
Mark did not answer.
Daniel’s voice became sharp.
“Mark.””
Finally:
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
Daniel looked like someone had punched him.
“What do you mean?””
“I was there.””
Nobody moved.
Mark continued.
“I wasn’t in the room. But I saw Ethan leave.””
My heart raced.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Mark’s voice broke.
“Because I was afraid.””
Daniel ended the call.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then he said:
“I spent my whole life believing I knew the people around me.””
I touched his shoulder.
“You did.””
He looked at me.
“No.””
His eyes filled.
“I knew the people they pretended to be.””
That night, we returned to the old house.
Daniel went into his father’s study.
I followed.
He opened the old desk drawer.
The same drawer where we found the notebook.
Inside was something we had missed.
A hidden compartment.
Daniel pulled it open.
There was one final document.
A letter.
But this one was not from Michael.
It was from Lauren.
Dated two weeks before the wedding.
Daniel read the first line.
Then he stopped.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
My hands shook.
The letter was addressed to Ethan.
*Dad,*
*I know what you asked me to do.*
*I know why you wanted me to marry Daniel.*
*But I need you to understand something.*
*I actually fell in love with him.*
I looked at Daniel.
He looked confused.
The next sentence changed everything.
*I was going to tell him the truth after the wedding.*
I kept reading.
*I was going to tell him that you were the reason his father died.*
My breath stopped.
But there was one final sentence.
One sentence that explained why Lauren had looked afraid at the wedding.
*Dad, if you hurt Daniel or Evelyn, I will expose everything.*
Daniel stared at the letter.
“Lauren was trying to stop him.””
I whispered:
“Maybe.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A voice spoke.
A woman’s voice.
Lauren.
“Mrs. Carter.””
I froze.
“Where are you?””
Her breathing was shaky.
“Please listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your son is in danger.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“Daniel trusted the wrong person.””
The call suddenly ended.
And when Daniel’s phone rang one second later…
May you like
The name on the screen was the last person we expected.
Mark.
