Chapter 8: The Brother Who Vanished
The lights returned.
But the person at the door was gone.
Only a broken flowerpot remained on the floor.
Daniel rushed outside.
I followed.
The street was empty.
No car.
No person.
Nothing.
Except a small envelope lying near the sidewalk.
Daniel picked it up.
“Don’t touch it,” Detective Harris warned when he arrived minutes later.
But Daniel already had.
His face changed as he opened it.
“What is it?””
He handed it to me.
Inside was a photograph.
A recent photograph.
Not old.
Not from fifteen years ago.
Taken yesterday.
It showed me standing outside my house.
Watching the garden.
Watching my roses.
My hands went cold.
On the back were four words.
*You should have stayed quiet.*
Daniel looked furious.
“This is a threat.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, you need protection.””
I almost laughed.
Protection.
At seventy-two years old, I never expected to need protection from my own family.
That night, Daniel refused to leave me alone.
He slept on the couch.
I found him there at three in the morning.
Staring at the ceiling.
“You should sleep.””
He looked at me.
“So should you.””
I sat beside him.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“I’m sorry.””
His expression changed.
“For what?””
“For everything your father left behind.””
He shook his head.
“Mom, none of this is your fault.””
“I brought Robert into our family.””
“You loved your brother.””
“Yes.””
I looked down.
“And I was wrong.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“Sometimes the people closest to us are the hardest to see clearly.””
The next morning, Detective Harris called.
They had found Robert.
Alive.
Living under another name.
In another state.
Daniel and I flew out that afternoon.
I did not know what I expected.
Anger.
Denial.
Fear.
I expected anything except the man who opened the door.
Robert looked older.
Much older.
His hair was gray.
His shoulders were bent.
For a moment, he looked at me like my little brother again.
Then his face changed.
“Evelyn.””
I stared at him.
“You’re alive.””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
“Why did you let me believe you disappeared?””
Silence.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You owe us answers.””
Robert looked at him.
“Daniel.””
The way he said his name hurt.
Like he was remembering a child.
“I held you when you were born.””
Daniel’s expression did not soften.
“You betrayed my father.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“I know.””
The admission shocked us.
No denial.
No excuses.
Just guilt.
“Why?””
Robert sat down.
“Because I was weak.””
I remained standing.
“That is not an answer.””
He looked at me.
“You remember when Michael built the company?””
“Yes.””
“He promised Ethan and me we would all share in it.””
Daniel frowned.
“But Dad did share.””
“No.””
Robert shook his head.
“Not equally.””
I felt anger rise.
“So you helped kill him because you wanted more money?””
Robert looked ashamed.
“No.””
“Then why?””
He looked at Daniel.
“Because Ethan convinced me your father was planning to destroy us.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“And you believed him?””
Robert looked down.
“I did.””
The room went quiet.
Then Robert said something that made all of us freeze.
“But Ethan lied.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Robert’s voice broke.
“I found out after Michael died.””
I stepped closer.
“Found out what?””
“That Ethan never planned to share anything.””
My stomach tightened.
“He used us.””
Robert nodded.
“He used me. He used Vanessa. He used everyone.””
Daniel crossed his arms.
“Then why disappear?””
Robert looked at me.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Ethan?””
“No.””
A pause.
“Of what you would think of me.””
That hurt more than I expected.
Because beneath everything was still my brother.
The little boy who followed me everywhere.
The teenager who cried when our parents fought.
The man who betrayed us.
Robert reached into a drawer.
He pulled out a small box.
“I kept this.””
Inside was a watch.
Michael’s watch.
My breath caught.
“That belonged to your father.””
Robert nodded.
“He gave it to me that night.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why?””
Robert’s eyes filled.
“Because he knew he might not survive.””
The room became silent.
“He told me if anything happened, I needed to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Robert covered his face.
“Because I was a coward.””
Before anyone could respond, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
“What?””
A moment later, he whispered:
“No.””
Daniel stood.
“What happened?””
Robert looked at us.
“The person you’re looking for…”
He slowly turned the phone around.
A message appeared.
A photograph.
A man standing outside Robert’s house.
Watching.
Robert whispered:
“He knows where I am.””
Daniel looked at the photo.
Then his face changed.
Because he recognized the man.
It was not Ethan.
May you like
It was not Lauren.
It was someone none of us expected.
