Chapter 6: The Man at the Door

Ethan Whitmore did not look like a villain.

That was the most terrifying part.

Villains in stories always announce themselves.

They arrive angry.

They make threats.

They reveal who they are.

Ethan arrived wearing a navy suit and a gentle expression.

The same expression he had worn when he brought Daniel a baseball glove for his tenth birthday.

The same expression he wore when he stood beside me at Michael’s funeral.

A familiar face.

A trusted face.

A dangerous face.

Daniel stood between us and the door.

“Why are you here?””

Ethan stopped on the porch.

“Daniel.””

His voice was calm.

“I think we need to talk.””

“You lost that privilege years ago.””

Ethan looked past him.

His eyes landed on me.

“Evelyn.””

I felt sick hearing my name from him.

“Don’t call me that.””

Something flickered across his face.

Pain.

Or maybe acting.

“I know you’re angry.””

“Angry?””

I stepped forward.

“My husband wrote a letter warning me about you.””

For the first time, Ethan’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Daniel saw it too.

“You knew about the letter.””

Ethan was silent.

That was enough.

Daniel opened the door wider.

“How long?””

Ethan sighed.

“I was hoping we could do this differently.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

Ethan looked at him.

“I cared about your father.””

“Then why did you steal from him?””

Silence.

The accusation hung between them.

Ethan looked at me.

“You told him.””

I shook my head.

“No. I didn’t.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“We found the records.””

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

Then he smiled sadly.

“You think you understand what happened.””

“Explain it.””

“I will.””

He looked around.

“May I come inside?””

“No.””

Ethan nodded.

“Fair enough.””

He stayed on the porch.

Then he said:

“Your father was not the man you think he was.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Be careful.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“My father spent his life building a company and protecting his family.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Your father spent his life making decisions without telling anyone the consequences.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“You have no right to speak about him.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Do you know why Michael never told you about the trust?””

I said nothing.

“Because he knew you would have walked away from it.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan continued.

“Michael knew money changed people.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“And you were the exception?””

Ethan looked down.

“No.””

That answer surprised us.

“I wasn’t.””

A strange silence followed.

For a moment, he looked older.

Not dangerous.

Just tired.

Then Lauren stepped onto the porch.

“Dad.””

Ethan turned.

His face hardened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Lauren laughed quietly.

“You mean I shouldn’t tell them?””

Daniel looked between them.

“Tell us what?””

Lauren stared at her father.

“The truth.””

Ethan’s expression became serious.

“Lauren.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“I’m done protecting you.””

Daniel watched her carefully.

“You knew about the trust before you met me.””

Lauren nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“But that wasn’t the only thing.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What else?””

Lauren swallowed.

“My father knew Michael was sick.””

Nobody spoke.

“He knew he didn’t have much time.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“And?””

Lauren looked at Ethan.

“He used that.””

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

“My father tried to convince Michael that Daniel was not ready to inherit the company.””

Daniel went still.

Ethan interrupted.

“That is not what happened.””

Lauren ignored him.

“He wanted control.””

The porch became silent.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Did you?””

Ethan did not answer.

That was his mistake.

Because silence was an answer.

Daniel stepped back.

“You betrayed him.””

Ethan finally spoke.

“Your father betrayed me first.””

I felt my breath catch.

“What?””

Ethan looked at me.

“He promised me partnership.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That doesn’t justify stealing.””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice became bitter.

“But it explains why everything happened.””

Lauren whispered:

“Dad.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at us.

“Say that again.””

A pause.

Then:

“When?””

My stomach tightened.

Daniel ended the call.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“The police found something.””

“What?””

His eyes moved toward Ethan.

“An old file connected to my father’s death.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.

“They found evidence that someone tried to make Michael’s death look natural.””

The color disappeared from Ethan’s face.

And Lauren whispered:

“Dad…”

Because she already knew.

May you like

She knew exactly what they had found.

And she knew exactly who had done it.
