Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Will
Daniel did not sleep that night.
Neither did I.
The folder stayed open on the kitchen table until sunrise.
Every time I walked past it, I felt like I was looking at a stranger’s life.
A woman I had welcomed into my family.
A woman I had defended.
A woman I had called my future daughter.
At six in the morning, Daniel finally spoke.
“I need to tell you something.””
I poured coffee into two cups.
“Tell me.””
He looked exhausted.
“When Dad died, he left me more than the house.””
I sat across from him.
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t know everything.””
The room became quiet.
“My father created a trust before he passed.””
I frowned.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t think it mattered.””
He opened another document.
“Most of the money was protected.””
I read through the papers.
Then I saw the name.
*The Carter Family Foundation.*
“What is this?””
“Dad’s private investment account.””
I looked at him.
“How much?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Enough that someone would spend years trying to get access.””
My hands went cold.
“Lauren knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He looked at the documents.
“That’s what I’m trying to find out.””
Later that morning, Daniel met with his attorney, and I stayed home.
I tried to clean.
I tried to read.
I tried to convince myself that everything would be fine.
But my mind kept returning to the wedding.
The rose.
The slap.
The look on Lauren’s face when Daniel removed the ring.
She had not looked heartbroken.
She had looked afraid.
Around noon, Daniel called.
“Mom, I need you to come here.””
His voice made me stand immediately.
“What happened?””
“There’s something you need to see.””
When I arrived at his office, his attorney was waiting.
A woman named Rebecca.
She placed a file on the desk.
“Mrs. Carter, I wish we had met under different circumstances.””
I sat down.
“What is this?””
Rebecca exchanged a glance with Daniel.
Then she opened the file.
“Your late husband left instructions that were not to be revealed until Daniel married.””
I looked at my son.
“What?””
Daniel looked just as confused.
Rebecca continued.
“The trust included a condition.””
“What condition?””
She slid a paper toward me.
I read the sentence.
*The inheritance will only transfer after Daniel marries a woman who proves her commitment is to his family, not his assets.*
I stared at the page.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Your father knew.””
Daniel swallowed.
“He knew someone might come after this.””
Rebecca nodded.
“And he created a test.””
I looked at my son.
“Does Lauren know about this condition?””
Daniel’s silence answered before his words did.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“How?””
Rebecca opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Lauren.
But not from the wedding.
Not from a party.
From years earlier.
She was standing beside a man I recognized.
My breath caught.
“Who is that?””
Daniel picked up the picture.
His face drained of color.
“Mom…”
“What?””
He turned the photograph around.
On the back was a handwritten note.
A single name.
A name neither of us expected.
*Michael Carter.*
Daniel’s father.
My hands began to shake.
“That’s impossible.””
Because Michael had been dead for fifteen years.
But the photograph was real.
And Lauren was standing beside him.
Smiling.
As if she had known my husband long before she ever met my son.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom…”
The office door suddenly opened.
Rebecca turned.
A man stood there holding a sealed envelope.
“I’m sorry to interrupt,” he said.
Daniel frowned.
“Who are you?””
The man looked directly at me.
Then placed the envelope on the desk.
“Mrs. Carter, this was left for you.””
My fingers froze.
“By who?””
The man hesitated.
Then answered:
“By your husband.””
My blood ran cold.
Because my husband had been dead for fifteen years.
May you like
And somehow…
he had still been trying to warn me.
