Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
For several seconds after the call ended, Daniel did not move.
Neither did I.
The words stayed in the room.
The person who killed him.
Michael had not died peacefully.
Not really.
Not if someone had been searching for his secrets.
Not if Lauren’s family was involved.
Daniel looked at his phone.
“She’s lying.””
His voice was firm.
But his hands were shaking.
I knew my son.
He wanted those words to be true.
He wanted Lauren to be exactly what he believed she was.
A mistake.
A selfish person.
Someone who could be erased from his life.
Because the alternative was worse.
The alternative was that she had been part of something much bigger.
“Daniel,” I said softly.
He looked at me.
“Don’t.””
I stopped.
“I don’t want to defend her.””
“I know.””
“But I also don’t want anger to make us careless.””
He looked away.
After everything that happened, he was still trying to be fair.
That was Daniel.
Even when someone hurt him, he searched for the missing piece.
Rebecca arrived twenty minutes later.
When Daniel told her about Lauren’s call, her expression changed.
“She contacted you after sending the threat?””
Daniel frowned.
“What threat?””
Rebecca pulled out her phone.
“Your attorney received this.””
She showed us a message.
It was from Lauren.
*Tell Daniel the truth about his father before someone else does.*
Daniel stared.
“That’s not a threat.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“It is if she knows something and refuses to explain.””
The next morning, Daniel agreed to meet Lauren.
I hated the idea.
But I understood why.
He needed answers.
The meeting took place at a quiet restaurant downtown.
I stayed nearby in the car.
I did not want to interfere.
But I also could not sit at home pretending everything was normal.
Through the window, I watched them.
Lauren arrived first.
She looked different.
Not like the woman from the wedding.
Not like the confident bride surrounded by cameras.
She looked tired.
Scared.
Daniel sat across from her.
Their conversation became intense quickly.
Eventually, Daniel stood.
A few minutes later, he walked out.
His face told me something was wrong.
I rolled down the window.
“What happened?””
He got inside.
“She knows everything.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel stared ahead.
“She knew about the trust.””
I gripped the seat.
“How?””
“She said her father told her.””
“Ethan?””
Daniel nodded.
“He worked with Dad.””
I felt a chill.
“Worked with him?””
“Yes.””
He started the car.
“Lauren said her father was Michael’s closest business partner.””
I remembered Ethan.
A man who attended every family dinner.
A man who brought gifts for Daniel when he was young.
A man who hugged me after Michael’s funeral.
I whispered:
“He was our friend.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“That’s what Dad meant.””
The person close to our family.
That afternoon, Daniel searched through old company records.
Hours passed.
Then he found something.
A transfer.
A missing account.
A transaction from fifteen years ago.
“Mom.””
I walked over.
He pointed at the screen.
“This happened three days before Dad died.””
I read the information.
The amount was enormous.
“Where did the money go?””
Daniel clicked.
A company name appeared.
A company I had never heard of.
But Daniel had.
His face changed.
“What?””
He whispered:
“This company belonged to Ethan.””
Before I could answer, someone knocked on the door.
Daniel and I froze.
Nobody was supposed to come.
The knock came again.
Slow.
Confident.
Daniel walked toward the entrance.
“Stay behind me.””
He opened the door.
Lauren stood there.
Her eyes immediately found mine.
“I need to talk to both of you.””
Daniel stepped outside.
“No.””
“Daniel, please.””
“You lied to me.””
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“From what?””
Her eyes filled.
“From my father.””
That stopped him.
Lauren looked over his shoulder at me.
“Your husband was investigating my family.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“And now you’re here because?””
“Because he found something before he died.””
“What?””
Lauren took a deep breath.
“The truth about my father.””
A car engine sounded outside.
Lauren’s face changed.
She looked toward the street.
Fear appeared instantly.
“What?””
Daniel noticed.
“Who is that?””
She stepped backward.
“You need to lock the door.””
Nobody moved.
Then a black SUV stopped in front of the house.
The passenger door opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Well dressed.
Calm.
Lauren whispered:
“My father.””
Daniel stared.
Ethan Whitmore walked toward the house.
And for the first time in fifteen years, I saw the man who had comforted me after my husband’s funeral.
May you like
The man who had held my son’s shoulder and promised he would always protect our family.
The man my husband had warned me about.
