Chapter 9: The Last Secret Of The Harrington Family

Daniel disappeared at 11:42 PM.

No witnesses.

No struggle.

No security footage.

Just gone.

The police called it a possible kidnapping.

I called it what it was.

A message.

The Harringtons wanted us afraid.

But they made one mistake.

They kidnapped the wrong man.

Because Daniel Cross had spent twenty years preparing for this moment.

And he had taught me something before he vanished.

Never fight your enemy where they are strongest.

Fight them where they are weakest.

Their secrets.

Detective Harris stood in my truck outside the hospital.

“We need to be careful.””

I looked at him.

“Careful?””

He nodded.

“They have resources.””

“So do we.””

He sighed.

“You’re talking about your old contacts?””

“Yes.””

“The shipyard?””

I looked at him.

“You know about that?””

He shrugged.

“I investigate people.””

I almost smiled.

“Then you should know I don’t make empty threats.””

He looked at me seriously.

“I believe you.””

That was the first time anyone had said those words.

An hour later, we found Daniel.

Not in a warehouse.

Not in a basement.

Not somewhere hidden.

He was sitting inside the old Harrington estate.

The same place where Chloe had been attacked.

The police entered with weapons drawn.

But Daniel was already waiting.

And he wasn’t alone.

Garrett stood behind him.

Holding a gun.

My heart stopped.

“Garrett.””

He smiled.

“Mrs. Reed.””

“You’re insane.””

“No.””

He looked around the mansion.

“I’m protecting my family.””

I stared at him.

“Your family?””

“You have no idea what’s happening.””

I laughed.

“My daughter almost died.””

His expression hardened.

“She was never supposed to find those documents.””

“So you beat her?””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t want it to happen.””

“But you let it.””

Silence.

That was enough.

Daniel looked at Garrett.

“You’re just like your father.””

Garrett’s face changed.

“Don’t say his name.””

“Why?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Because you know the truth.””

Garrett raised the gun.

“Shut up.””

The room became still.

Then Evelyn walked in.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Like she owned the air around her.

“Garrett.””

He lowered the gun slightly.

“Mother.””

I stared.

The entire family.

Together.

Evelyn looked at me.

“I’m sorry it came to this.””

I almost laughed.

“Sorry?””

“Yes.””

She sighed.

“Your daughter was never supposed to be involved.””

“You attacked her.””

Evelyn looked at Garrett.

Then back at me.

“No.””

My heart froze.

“What?””

She smiled faintly.

“You still don’t understand.””

The same words everyone kept saying.

You don’t understand.

She walked closer.

“Garrett is emotional. Reckless.””

Garrett looked angry.

“Mother.””

“But I…”

She paused.

“I planned everything.””

The room went silent.

Detective Harris raised his weapon.

“You’re admitting this?””

Evelyn smiled.

“You think this ends with me?””

Then she looked at me.

“Samantha, ask yourself one question.””

“What?””

“Why did Chloe trust Garrett enough to marry him?””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Evelyn smiled.

“Because she believed she knew him.””

A terrible feeling entered my chest.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn reached into her purse.

She pulled out a folder.

Then threw it onto the table.

The pages scattered.

Birth records.

Medical documents.

A DNA test.

My eyes moved across them.

Then stopped.

The room spun.

Because at the top of the document was Chloe’s name.

And underneath it…

Was mine.

But beside the word *Mother*…

Was another name.

A name I had never seen before.

Evelyn whispered:

“Your daughter was never just my daughter-in-law.””

I looked at the paper.

Unable to breathe.

“She was the missing piece.””

My hands shook.

“Missing piece of what?””

Evelyn smiled.

“Of the empire you spent twenty years trying to destroy.””

Then the lights suddenly went out.

A gunshot echoed through the mansion.

And when the emergency lights came on…

Someone was lying on the floor.

But it wasn’t Garrett.

May you like

It wasn’t Evelyn.

It was Detective Harris.
