Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
The hospital hallway disappeared.
The voices disappeared.
Even Evelyn Harrington’s footsteps fading into the distance disappeared.
There was only that picture.
Me.
Twenty years younger.
Standing beside a man whose face I had spent two decades trying to forget.
Daniel Cross.
The man who had once been my entire world.
The man who had promised me forever.
The man everyone believed had died in a warehouse fire.
My fingers trembled as I turned the photograph over again.
Six words stared back at me.
*Your past has finally found you.*
I shoved the picture into my coat pocket before anyone else could see it.
“Mrs. Reed?””
I looked up.
Detective Harris was standing several feet away.
He had seen Evelyn leave.
He had seen my face change.
“What did she give you?””
“Nothing.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You’re lying.””
I almost smiled.
Twenty years ago, I had learned how to read people.
Detectives.
Businessmen.
Thieves.
Liars.
And right now, Detective Harris wasn’t looking at me like someone investigating a crime.
He was looking at me like someone trying to solve a puzzle.
“I need to check on my daughter,” I said.
He stepped aside.
But before I walked away, he spoke.
“Mrs. Reed.””
I stopped.
“The Harringtons don’t scare easily.””
I looked over my shoulder.
“Neither do I.””
His expression changed.
Because for the first time, he believed me.
That night, I sat beside Chloe’s hospital bed with the photograph hidden beneath my jacket.
I had spent hours telling myself not to look.
Not to reopen old wounds.
Not to remember.
But secrets have a way of demanding attention.
Especially the ones buried for twenty years.
I finally pulled it out.
Daniel was smiling.
The same crooked smile that had made me fall in love with him when I was twenty-three.
Back then, he wasn’t a ghost.
He was a brilliant engineer at Harrington Industries.
Smart.
Ambitious.
Kind.
At least, that was what I believed.
We met when I was working in the financial department.
I was young.
Single.
Trying to build a future for myself and my daughter.
Daniel was the first person who looked at me like I wasn’t just a struggling single mother.
He saw me.
Or at least I thought he did.
Then everything changed.
I discovered the Harringtons were hiding millions of dollars through fake companies.
Daniel helped me gather evidence.
He told me we were going to expose them.
He told me we were going to start a new life.
Then one night, the warehouse where he stored the documents burned down.
His body was never found.
The police assumed he died in the fire.
The Harringtons offered condolences.
They even sent flowers.
I remembered Evelyn Harrington standing at my door.
Wearing black.
Pretending to cry.
She had placed a hand on my shoulder and said:
“Some people chase things they don’t understand. They pay the price.””
At the time, I thought she was talking about Daniel’s investigation.
Now I wondered if she was threatening me.
A small movement pulled me back to reality.
Chloe’s fingers twitched.
I immediately stood.
“Baby?””
Her eyes opened slowly.
For a few seconds, she looked confused.
Then terrified.
“Mom…”
“I’m here.””
I grabbed her hand.
“You’re safe.””
Her breathing became uneven.
“No…”
“What?””
She looked toward the door.
“Not safe.””
My heart tightened.
“Chloe, tell me what happened.””
She swallowed.
“Garrett…”
“I know.””
“No, Mom.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t know.””
I leaned closer.
“Then tell me.””
She closed her eyes.
“I found something.””
“What?””
“About the Harringtons.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What did you find?””
She struggled to speak.
“Dad…”
I froze.
“Your dad?””
She nodded weakly.
“Garrett said…”
Her voice cracked.
“He said my father wasn’t dead.””
The room became silent.
I felt like the ground had disappeared.
“What did Garrett say?””
Chloe looked terrified.
“He said Daniel Cross was alive.””
My breath stopped.
Before I could answer, the ICU door opened.
A nurse walked in.
“Mrs. Reed, you need to step outside for a moment.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her expression was nervous.
“There’s someone here asking to see you.””
“Who?””
The nurse hesitated.
May you like
Then whispered:
“He says his name is Daniel.””
