Chapter 5: The Truth Beneath The Ashes
I couldn’t move.
For twenty years, I had imagined this moment.
But never like this.
Not in a hospital hallway.
Not while my daughter lay injured behind a glass door.
Not while the man who was supposed to be dead waited only a few steps away.
The nurse looked at me.
“Mrs. Reed?””
I forced myself to breathe.
“Where is he?””
She pointed toward the waiting area.
I walked slowly.
Every step felt impossible.
And then I saw him.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakable.
Daniel Cross stood near the window.
His hair was gray at the temples.
A scar ran along his jaw.
But his eyes…
His eyes were exactly the same.
The moment he saw me, his face broke.
“Samantha.””
I stopped.
That voice.
The voice I had cried over.
The voice I had spent years trying to forget.
“You’re dead.””
His expression collapsed.
“I know.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to say that.””
People in the waiting room looked over.
I didn’t care.
“You let me bury you.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I never wanted you to think I was gone.””
“Then why did you disappear?””
He looked at Chloe’s ICU room.
“Because if I came back, she would have died.””
My anger froze.
“What?””
Daniel took a shaky breath.
“The Harringtons weren’t just hiding money.””
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.
“They were hiding murders.””
My stomach twisted.
“What are you talking about?””
He handed me the envelope.
“Twenty years ago, I found evidence that Evelyn and Garrett’s father were eliminating anyone who threatened them.””
I stared at him.
“Garrett’s father?””
Daniel nodded.
“Richard Harrington.””
I remembered the name.
The old patriarch.
The man who controlled the family before Garrett.
“He ordered the warehouse fire,” Daniel said.
My fingers tightened around the envelope.
“You said you died.””
“I had no choice.””
“No choice?””
I stepped closer.
“You could have told me.””
Daniel looked away.
“If they knew I survived, they would have gone after you and Chloe.””
I wanted to hate him.
I really did.
But then I saw the pain in his face.
The same pain I had carried.
“Why come back now?””
His eyes moved toward Chloe’s room.
“Because they made the same mistake twice.””
“What mistake?””
“They underestimated someone.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He looked directly at me.
“They thought your daughter was just a quiet woman they could control.””
His voice hardened.
“They forgot she was your daughter.””
I said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“Chloe found documents hidden inside the Harrington estate.””
“What documents?””
“Proof that they’ve been moving illegal money for decades.””
My heart sank.
“That’s why they attacked her.””
“Yes.””
“And they left her alive because?””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“They thought she was going to die before she could speak.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then I remembered Chloe’s words.
Don’t trust the person helping you.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who else knows?””
“No one.””
“Are you sure?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“You’re hiding something.””
Daniel looked away.
“Samantha…”
“No.””
My voice became sharp.
“Twenty years ago, I trusted you. I lost you. I spent years wondering why I wasn’t enough for you to stay.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Don’t do this.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
He was silent for several seconds.
Finally, he whispered:
“The person who helped me disappear…”
He stopped.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the hospital entrance.
A figure stood there.
Watching us.
My blood turned cold.
Because I recognized her.
The woman who had been helping me.
The woman who gave Detective Harris information.
The woman who claimed she wanted justice.
The woman Chloe had warned me about.
The nurse.
Daniel whispered:
“Her name is Laura.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Laura died fifteen years ago.””
May you like
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“She didn’t.””
