Chapter 8: The Evidence They Buried

Laura didn’t speak.

Neither did I.

For several seconds, we just stared at each other.

The parking lot was almost empty.

Rainwater collected beneath our feet.

The hospital lights reflected in her eyes.

Twenty years of friendship.

Twenty years of memories.

And suddenly, every memory felt like it had another meaning.

“You heard the call,” Laura said quietly.

I nodded.

“Who was that?””

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

Her expression changed.

“You sound like Daniel.””

“Maybe because Daniel was right.””

The words hit her.

I saw it.

A reaction she couldn’t hide.

“You knew.””

Laura closed her eyes.

“I knew something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The Harringtons weren’t the only people watching you.””

I stepped closer.

“Then who?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation destroyed whatever trust remained.

“Laura.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“You were trying to control what I knew.””

She didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than any lie.

“What’s in the folder?””

Laura handed it to me.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Financial records.

Photographs.

And one name repeated over and over.

Daniel Cross.

“What is this?””

“The truth.””

I flipped through the pages.

Daniel’s death certificate.

A hospital record.

A new identity.

A private account.

I looked up.

“You helped him disappear.””

Laura nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because I was the reason he was targeted.””

The answer stunned me.

“What?””

Laura sat on the bench.

“I worked for Richard Harrington.””

My jaw tightened.

“You worked for them?””

“Yes.””

“Then why help Daniel?””

“Because I found out what they were really doing.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Richard wasn’t just corrupt. He was dangerous.””

I looked at the papers.

“You knew he ordered the fire.””

Laura nodded.

“I found out after.””

“After Daniel disappeared?””

“Yes.””

I felt my anger weaken slightly.

But not disappear.

“You let me believe he was dead.””

“I had to.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You chose to.””

Laura looked like she wanted to argue.

But she couldn’t.

Because I was right.

She had made a choice.

Maybe a painful one.

Maybe a necessary one.

But still a choice.

“What does this have to do with Chloe?””

Laura’s face became serious.

“Everything.””

She opened another document.

“This is why they attacked her.””

I looked down.

It was a DNA report.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

I read it again.

And again.

Because it didn’t make sense.

“What is this?””

Laura whispered:

“Chloe found out Garrett isn’t the biological father of her baby.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She discovered it three days before the attack.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“She was going to leave him.””

“Who is the father?””

Laura looked at me.

And the answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“Daniel’s son.””

The world went silent.

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

Laura’s eyes filled with tears.

“Is it?””

My mind raced.

Daniel.

Chloe.

Garrett.

The Harringtons.

A hidden child.

A secret buried for years.

I looked toward the hospital.

“My daughter knows?””

“Yes.””

“Does Daniel know?””

“No.””

I turned.

“Then how do you?””

Laura looked at the ground.

“Because I was there.””

A chill moved through me.

“There?””

She nodded.

“The night Chloe was born.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What are you saying?””

Laura whispered:

“Twenty-four years ago, when you gave birth…”

She stopped.

Then said:

“Someone switched the hospital records.””

My hands went numb.

“No.””

“Samantha…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“My daughter is my daughter.””

Laura reached for me.

“I never said she wasn’t.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Laura’s voice broke.

“I’m saying the Harringtons knew something about Chloe’s birth that you never knew.””

A phone rang.

Not mine.

Laura’s.

She looked down.

Her face changed.

“What?””

I watched her answer.

A few seconds later, she went pale.

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m coming.””

She hung up.

“What happened?””

Laura looked at me.

“Daniel.””

My heart jumped.

May you like

“What about him?””

“He was taken.””
