Chapter 7: The Betrayal Behind The White Coat
I stared at the image on Detective Harris’s tablet.
The reflection was blurry.
The lighting was terrible.
But there was no mistaking that ring.
A silver band with a small black stone.
A Harrington family ring.
My stomach twisted.
“No,” I whispered.
Detective Harris looked at me carefully.
“You recognize it.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I did.
Everyone in the Harrington family wore those rings.
They were not jewelry.
They were a declaration.
A symbol that said they belonged to something older, richer, and more powerful than everyone else.
But there was only one person who wore that exact design.
“Evelyn,” I said.
The hallway became silent.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Garrett’s mother?””
I nodded slowly.
“She never takes it off.””
Detective Harris looked back at the footage.
“So Evelyn Harrington entered your daughter’s ICU room disguised as medical staff.””
My hands shook.
“She wanted Chloe dead.””
Laura suddenly spoke.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped closer.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
I turned toward her.
“Why are you defending her?””
“I’m not.””
Her voice was urgent.
“I’m saying Evelyn wouldn’t risk doing this herself.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she’s smarter than that.””
Laura looked at the screen.
“She spent forty years building that family’s reputation. She doesn’t get her hands dirty.””
I felt anger rise.
“She beat my daughter with her own hands.””
Laura looked away.
“That was different.””
“Different?””
My voice echoed through the hallway.
“My daughter was five months pregnant.””
Laura closed her eyes.
And for the first time, I saw something I had not seen before.
Shame.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Shame.
“What aren’t you telling us?”” Daniel asked.
Laura didn’t answer.
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Everyone needs to start telling the truth.””
He looked at me.
“Especially now.””
I wanted answers.
All of them.
But before anyone could speak, a doctor rushed out of Chloe’s room.
“Mrs. Reed?””
I ran toward him.
“What happened?””
He looked relieved.
“She stabilized.””
My knees almost gave out.
“But someone did attempt to remove her oxygen line.””
My blood turned cold.
“Is the baby okay?””
The doctor nodded.
“Still fighting.””
Still fighting.
Those words became the only thing keeping me standing.
I entered Chloe’s room after the doctors cleared me.
She looked smaller than ever.
My strong, stubborn girl.
The woman who had always protected everyone else.
Now she was lying there because nobody had protected her.
I sat beside her.
“Chloe.””
Her eyes fluttered.
Slowly.
“Mom?””
I grabbed her hand.
“I’m here.””
Her breathing was weak.
“Did they find…”
“Yes.””
I leaned closer.
“We know someone tried to hurt you.””
Fear crossed her face.
“Not just me.””
I froze.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“They want the baby.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because the baby is proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She struggled.
“The papers.””
“What papers, Chloe?””
She closed her eyes.
“Garrett’s father.””
I leaned closer.
“Richard?””
She nodded.
“Before he died… he left something behind.””
“What?””
“A confession.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“What confession?””
Chloe’s fingers tightened around mine.
“He killed someone.””
My breath caught.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
And the fear in her eyes told me the answer mattered.
“Daniel.””
I turned toward the door.
Daniel was standing there.
He had heard everything.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel walked inside slowly.
“Chloe.””
Her eyes widened.
“You’re alive.””
He nodded.
“I am.””
She started crying.
“I thought…”
“I know.””
Daniel looked broken.
“I’m sorry.””
Chloe looked at him.
“You need to know something.””
“What?””
“Garrett knows.””
My blood ran cold.
“Knows what?””
“That you survived.””
Daniel froze.
“When?””
“Months ago.””
Silence.
“How?””
Chloe looked toward me.
“Because Garrett showed me.””
She swallowed.
“He said he knew my mother had secrets.””
My hands tightened.
“He knew about me?””
Chloe nodded.
“He said he knew everything.””
Daniel looked terrified.
“What exactly did he say?””
Chloe’s voice became a whisper.
“He said your mother thinks she buried the past.””
She looked at me.
“But the past buried her.””
The next morning, Detective Harris brought us the arrest warrant.
Or at least, he tried to.
The Harrington attorneys had already moved.
The district attorney refused to sign.
“Not enough evidence,” Harris said angrily.
I stared at him.
“We have video.””
“We have suspicious footage.””
“We have a pregnant woman in a coma.””
He looked frustrated.
“The Harringtons are claiming the footage was manipulated.””
I laughed.
“They really believe they can buy everything.””
Harris didn’t respond.
Because we both knew they could buy a lot.
But not everything.
That afternoon, I made a decision.
If the law wouldn’t move fast enough…
I would.
I returned to my truck.
Inside the glove compartment was a small black notebook.
The one thing I had kept hidden for twenty years.
The reason Daniel disappeared.
The reason the Harringtons feared me.
I opened it.
Inside were names.
Dates.
Bank accounts.
Everything I had collected before the warehouse fire.
But there was one page I had never understood.
A note written in Daniel’s handwriting.
*If anything happens to me, Samantha must never trust the person who claims to have saved me.*
My blood went cold.
The person who saved him.
Laura.
I looked at the page again.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Mrs. Reed.””
“Who is this?””
“You’re looking in the wrong direction.””
I tightened my grip.
“Where is my daughter’s attacker?””
The voice laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
A pause.
Then:
“Evelyn Harrington didn’t try to kill Chloe.””
My heart raced.
“Then who did?””
The voice whispered:
“The person standing beside you.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered my phone.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
Someone had been beside me every single day since Chloe entered the hospital.
Someone who always knew where I was.
Someone who always knew what evidence we found.
Someone who had access to every room.
I turned around.
May you like
And saw Laura standing behind me.
Holding a folder.
