Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Emma’s Death
Ethan stared at the message until the screen went dark.
Then he turned it back on.
The words remained.
They didn’t disappear.
They didn’t become less terrifying.
Your wife didn’t die because of Charles.
She died because of what she discovered about you.
For two years, Ethan had lived with one painful truth.
Emma was gone.
Now someone was offering him another.
A worse one.
“Dad?””
Ethan quickly locked his phone.
“Yeah?””
Oliver looked at him.
“Are you okay?””
Ethan smiled.
The hardest thing about being a parent was pretending to be strong when you were breaking.
“I’m okay.””
Oliver studied him.
“You’re doing the face.””
“What face?””
“The face you make when you’re worried.””
Ethan almost smiled.
Emma used to say the same thing.
She always knew.
“Go get ready for bed.””
Oliver nodded.
Then paused.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Don’t let anyone make you forget Mommy.””
Ethan felt tears rise.
“I won’t.””
The next morning, Ethan met Nathan again.
He needed answers.
Not theories.
Not hidden messages.
Answers.
Nathan looked exhausted.
“You got the message.””
Ethan froze.
“You know about it?””
Nathan nodded.
“Because I got one too.””
“What did yours say?””
Nathan looked away.
“Mine said if I talked, Ethan Walker would learn what his wife did.””
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
“What did Emma do?””
Nathan didn’t answer.
Instead, he placed a folder on the table.
“This is why I was afraid.””
Ethan opened it.
Inside were medical records.
Emma’s hospital records.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
There was a missing page.
“What is this?””
Nathan looked serious.
“The night Emma died, someone accessed her medical file.””
“Who?””
Nathan slid another document forward.
A visitor authorization.
Ethan looked.
The signature made his blood run cold.
Because it was his.
His own name.
His own signature.
“What?””
Nathan watched him carefully.
“You didn’t sign that?””
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
Ethan stared.
“I was with Emma.””
Nathan nodded.
“That’s what I thought.””
Ethan felt dizzy.
Someone had forged his signature.
Someone had entered Emma’s room.
Someone had changed something.
“What was changed?””
Nathan hesitated.
“Her medication records.””
The world seemed to stop.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
Ethan pushed back from the table.
“My wife died from her illness.””
Nathan looked at him.
“She was sick.””
“Yes.””
“But someone may have made sure she didn’t survive.””
Ethan couldn’t breathe.
Every memory changed.
Every moment.
The hospital.
The doctors.
The final goodbye.
Someone had been there.
Someone had touched the life he loved most.
That afternoon, Ethan confronted Lorraine.
Not with anger.
With fear.
“Mom.””
She looked up.
And saw his face.
“What happened?””
“Did Emma ever think someone changed her medication?””
Lorraine went still.
That was enough.
Ethan’s heart broke.
“You knew.””
Lorraine closed her eyes.
“I suspected.””
“How long?””
“Since before she died.””
He stepped back.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know for certain.””
“But you suspected.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Emma asked me not to.””
Ethan felt exhausted.
“Everyone keeps saying Emma asked them to protect me.””
Lorraine began crying.
“She knew you would destroy yourself trying to find the truth.””
“I was her husband.””
“And you were also Oliver’s father.””
The words stopped him.
Lorraine wiped her face.
“Emma knew something was wrong.””
“What?””
“She told me someone close to her had access to her medical information.””
Ethan whispered:
“Who?””
Lorraine looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“Mom.””
“I swear.””
The honesty in her voice made him pause.
Then she said:
“But Emma knew.””
“Knew what?””
“She left one final recording.””
Ethan froze.
“Where?””
Lorraine walked to the cabinet.
She pulled out a small box.
Inside was an old phone.
“Emma gave this to me the day before she died.””
Ethan stared.
“Why didn’t you show me?””
“Because she told me only to show you when you were ready.””
He took the phone.
His hands shook.
The battery barely worked.
But the screen turned on.
One video.
One file.
One last message.
Emma appeared.
She looked weaker than before.
But her eyes were clear.
“Ethan.””
His heart shattered hearing her voice.
“If you’re watching this, then I’m gone.””
He covered his mouth.
Emma smiled sadly.
“I wish I could tell you everything myself.””
She looked down.
“There is something you need to know.””
A pause.
“I was not afraid of dying.””
Ethan cried silently.
“I was afraid of leaving Oliver in a world where people could hurt him.””
The video continued.
“I discovered who was helping Charles.””
Ethan leaned closer.
Emma whispered:
“And it wasn’t Diana.””
The room went cold.
“It wasn’t my father.””
Ethan froze.
“Ethan…”
Emma looked directly into the camera.
“The person who helped Charles was someone inside our home.””
His breathing stopped.
Then Emma said the words he never expected.
“Someone who had access to everything.””
The video glitched.
The sound broke.
But one final sentence came through.
Clear.
Perfectly clear.
“The person who betrayed me…”
Emma looked terrified.
“…was you, Ethan.””
The screen went black.
Ethan stared.
Unable to move.
Unable to speak.
Because for the first time since Emma died…
May you like
He wondered if the person he trusted most…
Was himself.
