Chapter 2: The Letter Emma Left Behind

The ballroom was no longer a celebration.

It was a courtroom without a judge.

Everyone stood frozen as Lorraine held Emma’s letter in her hands.

Diana moved first.

“You don’t need to do this.””

Her voice was different now.

Less confident.

More desperate.

Lorraine looked at her.

“I think I do.””

Ethan took a step forward.

“Mom, what is that?””

Lorraine looked at Oliver first.

Then at Ethan.

“Something Emma wanted you to have if she ever believed someone was trying to take her place.””

Oliver frowned.

“My mommy knew someone would do that?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was already obvious.

Ethan felt sick.

He had spent two years believing Diana had joined their family because she loved them.

But Emma had somehow seen something he couldn’t.

“Open it,” Ethan whispered.

Lorraine handed him the letter.

His fingers shook as he unfolded it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Emma.

The person who used to leave grocery lists on the refrigerator.

The person who wrote birthday cards for everyone months in advance.

The person who always dotted her lowercase i’s with tiny circles.

Ethan read the first line.

*Ethan, if you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.*

His throat tightened.

He continued.

*I need you to listen carefully. Do not let anyone convince you that loving me means you cannot love again. That is not what I want. But do not let anyone convince Oliver that remembering me is wrong.*

Oliver stood beside him, watching.

Ethan looked up.

Diana immediately spoke.

“This is ridiculous.””

Lorraine turned.

“You haven’t heard the rest.””

“I don’t need to.””

“You do.””

Diana stepped forward.

“Emma is gone. She cannot control what happens now.””

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Careful.””

The warning in his voice made her stop.

Lorraine continued.

*Oliver will meet people who love him. Some will stay. Some will leave. But anyone who truly loves him will never ask him to cut pieces of himself away to make them comfortable.*

Ethan felt tears burn his eyes.

Because those words weren’t just about the necklace.

They were about everything he had ignored.

The missing photos.

The uncomfortable comments.

The quiet sadness in his son.

Diana laughed nervously.

“So now I’m the villain because I think a child should accept reality?””

Ethan looked at her.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You’re the villain because you think acceptance means forgetting.””

Her expression hardened.

“You always make me the outsider.””

“No,” Ethan said.

“You chose to stand outside.””

Oliver quietly reached for Ethan’s hand.

That small movement broke Ethan’s heart.

His son was still scared.

Still waiting for someone to leave.

Lorraine folded the letter.

“There’s more.””

Diana’s face changed again.

“No.””

Everyone heard it.

The fear.

Ethan noticed.

“Why are you afraid of a letter?””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

Diana looked away.

Lorraine opened the second page.

“Emma wrote about you.””

Silence.

Ethan stared at Diana.

“What does that mean?””

Diana didn’t answer.

Lorraine did.

“Emma knew Diana before you introduced her to us.””

Ethan felt confused.

“What?””

Lorraine looked down.

“Emma met her months before you started dating.””

The room shifted.

Diana immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can.””

“Good.””

Diana looked around.

She saw the family.

The friends.

The people who had trusted her.

Then she looked at Ethan.

And for the first time, she looked afraid.

“Emma misunderstood me.””

Ethan’s voice became colder.

“What did she misunderstand?””

Diana stayed silent.

Lorraine answered.

“She misunderstood why Diana was asking questions about our family.””

Ethan felt a chill.

“What questions?””

Lorraine looked at Oliver’s necklace.

“She wanted to know about Emma’s jewelry.””

Nobody moved.

“She wanted to know about the house.””

Ethan stared.

“She wanted to know about our finances.””

Diana’s face went white.

“Stop.””

Lorraine didn’t.

“And she wanted to know if Ethan had changed his will after Emma died.””

The room exploded with whispers.

Ethan couldn’t hear anything else.

Only one sentence.

Changed his will.

He looked at Diana.

“Why?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

“Why did you ask about my will?””

Diana swallowed.

“Because we were getting married.””

“Before we were engaged?””

Silence.

Ethan remembered.

The first time he met Diana.

The way she seemed unusually interested in his life.

The way she always asked about Emma’s family.

He had called it curiosity.

Maybe it was something else.

Diana suddenly grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

Ethan stepped in front of the door.

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You can’t keep me here.””

“I’m not.””

He held up the letter.

“I’m asking you one question.””

“What?””

“What happened to Emma’s necklace?””

Diana froze.

A terrible silence followed.

Then Oliver spoke.

“She took it.””

Everyone turned.

Oliver’s face was pale.

“What did you say, buddy?””

The little boy looked at Diana.

“She took Mommy’s necklace.””

Diana stared at him.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Oliver shook his head.

“Yes, I do.””

His voice trembled.

“You came into my room after Mommy died.””

Ethan’s heart stopped.

“What?””

Oliver looked down.

“You thought I was sleeping.””

Diana stepped backward.

“Oliver—”

“You took the box from Mommy’s closet.””

The room went completely silent.

Ethan looked at Diana.

“Is that true?””

She didn’t answer.

And that was answer enough.

Then Ethan noticed something.

Oliver wasn’t looking at Diana anymore.

He was looking at the cake.

At the place where the broken necklace had fallen.

As if he had remembered something important.

“Dad…”

“What?””

Oliver whispered:

“Mommy didn’t hide her half.””

Ethan frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Oliver pointed toward the cake.

“I remember.””

Everyone leaned closer.

“I remember Mommy saying she hid something where nobody would look.””

Ethan felt his heartbeat quicken.

“Where, Oliver?””

The little boy stared at the ruined engagement cake.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Inside the cake box.””
