The Half Heart Secret / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Witness in the Dark

The man called again three hours later.

Ethan almost didn’t answer.

Almost.

Because some part of him was afraid of what came next.

But another part had been waiting two years for someone to say the words out loud.

Emma deserved the truth.

“Hello?””

The man’s voice returned.

“Mr. Walker?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Nathan Cole.””

Ethan sat at his desk.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Then why call me?””

A long silence.

“Because I was there.””

Ethan gripped the phone.

“At the hospital?””

“Yes.””

His heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

Nathan’s voice became quieter.

“I worked security at St. Mary’s Hospital.””

Ethan remembered that night.

The endless hallway.

The smell of antiseptic.

The doctors refusing to make promises.

The last time he held Emma’s hand.

“What did you see?””

Nathan exhaled.

“Your wife was supposed to have a visitor.””

Ethan frowned.

“Who?””

“Charles Whitmore.””

The name felt like poison.

“He visited Emma?””

“Yes.””

Ethan stood.

“No one told me.””

“Because he came when you left.””

The room went silent.

“Why would he visit her when I wasn’t there?””

Nathan didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Because he didn’t want you hearing what she had to say.””

Ethan felt anger rising.

“What did Emma say?””

“She was scared.””

The word hit him.

Emma.

Scared.

The woman who smiled through pain.

The woman who comforted everyone else.

“She asked me to remember something.””

“What?””

Nathan lowered his voice.

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, tell Ethan to check the necklace.’”

Ethan closed his eyes.

The necklace.

Everything returned to that moment.

Diana breaking it.

The pendant.

The cake.

The hidden message.

Emma had been trying to leave him a path.

A way to find the truth.

“Why didn’t you tell me before?””

Nathan was quiet.

“Because Charles found me.””

Ethan froze.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he knew I saw something.””

The line went silent.

Then Nathan said:

“He threatened my family.””

Ethan felt cold.

“What did he threaten?””

“My daughter.””

The answer was barely audible.

Ethan sat back down.

“How did you get away?””

“I didn’t.””

A pause.

“I’m still hiding.””

Later that afternoon, Ethan met Nathan in an abandoned coffee shop outside town.

He went alone.

He told nobody.

Not Lorraine.

Not Diana.

Not even the police.

Not yet.

Nathan looked nothing like Ethan expected.

He was younger.

Tired.

A man who had spent years carrying fear.

“You’re sure about Charles?”” Ethan asked.

Nathan nodded.

“I watched him enter Emma’s room.””

“And?””

“He was angry.””

Ethan’s hands tightened.

“What did they argue about?””

Nathan looked down.

“Your wife knew he had been moving money.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“She confronted him?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Nathan swallowed.

“She told him she had evidence.””

The words echoed.

“Evidence of what?””

“Everything.””

Nathan reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Ethan stared.

“What is that?””

“The reason I called you.””

Inside was a hospital visitor record.

A printed security report.

And one final document.

Ethan recognized Emma’s handwriting immediately.

“No…”

Nathan looked at him.

“She gave this to me.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew she might not get another chance.””

Ethan opened it.

Only one sentence was written.

*Charles is not working alone.*

His stomach dropped.

“What?””

Nathan nodded.

“She knew there was someone else.””

Ethan looked at the page.

“Who?””

Nathan hesitated.

Then he said:

“I don’t know.””

A car door slammed outside.

Both men froze.

Nathan looked toward the window.

His face changed.

“No.””

Ethan turned.

“What?””

Nathan stood quickly.

“We need to leave.””

“Why?””

Nathan looked terrified.

“Because they found me.””

The coffee shop door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Ethan recognized him instantly.

Charles Whitmore.

But Charles was not alone.

Behind him stood someone Ethan never expected.

Someone who made him feel like the floor had disappeared.

Diana’s mother.

Rebecca Whitmore.

Ethan stared.

Because Rebecca had cried at Emma’s funeral.

Rebecca had held his hand.

Rebecca had told him:

“Emma was like a daughter to me.””

Now she stood beside Charles.

And she looked completely calm.

Charles smiled.

“Ethan.””

His voice was almost friendly.

“I was hoping we could talk.””

Ethan stepped backward.

“You knew.””

Charles tilted his head.

“Knew what?””

“You knew Emma found out.””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Ethan saw it.

Charles looked at Nathan.

Then back at Ethan.

“You always were smarter than people gave you credit for.””

Rebecca sighed.

“Charles.””

“No.””

Charles raised a hand.

“It’s fine.””

He walked closer.

“After all this time, Ethan finally wants answers.””

Ethan’s voice shook with rage.

“Did you kill my wife?””

The entire room went silent.

Charles stared at him.

Then he smiled.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I did make sure she couldn’t destroy me.””

Ethan felt his blood run cold.

Charles leaned closer.

“And now I’m going to do the same thing to you.””

Before Ethan could respond, Rebecca spoke.

A single sentence.

A sentence that changed everything.

“Ethan…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your wife wasn’t the only one who left evidence.””

She looked at Charles.

“She left a backup.””

Charles’ expression changed.

May you like

For the first time…

He looked afraid.
