Chapter 7: The Backup Emma Hid
For the first time in years, Ethan saw fear on Charles Whitmore’s face.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
It lasted only a second.
But Ethan noticed.
And that single second told him everything.
Charles recovered quickly.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
Ethan stared at him.
“No.””
His voice was low.
“I’m finally understanding.””
The abandoned coffee shop felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Nathan stood near the door, frozen between escape and staying.
Rebecca looked at Charles like she was seeing him for the first time.
“You told me there was no backup.””
Charles turned sharply.
“Rebecca.””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You said Emma was confused. You said she was imagining things.””
Charles’ jaw tightened.
“She was sick.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“And you expect me to believe that now?””
Ethan watched them.
The cracks were spreading.
For two years, Charles had built a perfect image.
A respected businessman.
A loving father.
A supportive family member.
But people like Charles always had one weakness.
They believed they were untouchable.
Until someone proved they weren’t.
“What backup?”” Ethan asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Rebecca slowly reached into her purse.
Charles immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
The command was sharp.
Not a request.
A warning.
Rebecca stopped.
Ethan noticed.
“What are you hiding?””
Charles looked at him.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””
Ethan almost laughed.
“My wife died. My son was manipulated. My company was almost stolen.””
He stepped closer.
“I think I know exactly what I’m involved in.””
Charles’ expression hardened.
“You think Emma was innocent?””
The sentence made Ethan pause.
“What?””
Charles shook his head.
“You only know the version she wanted you to know.””
Nathan looked confused.
Rebecca looked horrified.
Ethan felt a familiar pain.
Because Charles was doing what manipulators always did.
When the truth came close, they attacked the person who wasn’t there to defend themselves.
“Don’t,” Ethan said.
Charles smiled.
“Why? Because she was your wife?””
“Because she’s dead.””
The room went quiet.
Ethan’s voice broke slightly.
“And you’re standing here trying to make her look guilty because she can’t answer you.””
For a moment, Charles said nothing.
Then Rebecca spoke.
“She recorded everything.””
Everyone turned.
Charles’ face changed.
“Rebecca.””
“She knew you would do this.””
Rebecca looked at Ethan.
“She knew you would doubt yourself. She knew you would wonder if you missed signs.””
Ethan swallowed.
“Where is it?””
Rebecca looked toward the door.
“Safe.””
Charles laughed.
“You don’t even know what’s on it.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“I know enough.””
The confidence in her voice surprised Ethan.
She wasn’t afraid anymore.
Not of him.
Not of Charles.
“What happened to you?”” Ethan asked.
Rebecca looked down.
“I spent two years believing my husband because believing him was easier than accepting who he was.””
She took a breath.
“Then I found Emma’s journal.””
Charles went pale.
“Where?””
Rebecca ignored him.
“Emma wrote everything down.””
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
Another journal.
Another piece of Emma that had survived.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“That I helped him.””
Ethan stared.
Rebecca looked at him.
“I introduced Emma to Charles’ business contacts. I encouraged her to trust him.””
She shook her head.
“I thought I was helping my daughter-in-law.””
The word hit Ethan.
Daughter-in-law.
Emma had been loved.
Even by people who failed her.
Rebecca continued.
“When I found out what Charles was doing, I tried to warn Emma.””
“Too late?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Too late.””
Charles suddenly moved toward the door.
Nathan stepped in front of him.
“You’re not leaving.””
Charles looked amused.
“You think you can stop me?””
Nathan’s hands shook.
But he didn’t move.
“For once.””
He swallowed.
“For once, someone should.””
Charles looked at Ethan.
“You really trust these people?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t need to.
He trusted the fear in Charles’ eyes.
Two hours later, Ethan sat in Rebecca’s house.
The same house where he had attended holiday dinners.
The same place where Charles had toasted Emma’s memory.
Now it felt like a stranger’s home.
Rebecca placed a small metal case on the table.
Inside was a flash drive.
“This is it.””
Ethan looked at it.
“Emma made this?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The week before she passed.””
His hands went cold.
A week.
Emma knew she was running out of time.
And instead of spending every moment with her son…
She was protecting him.
Ethan connected the drive.
A video appeared.
The screen showed Emma sitting in their bedroom.
She looked tired.
Pale.
But she was smiling.
Ethan stopped breathing.
He hadn’t seen her move in years.
Hadn’t heard her voice except in memories.
“Ethan…”
The video Emma looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, I’m sorry.””
Tears immediately filled his eyes.
“No.””
He whispered.
Emma continued.
“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””
She looked down.
“But I was afraid.””
Ethan held his breath.
“I found out Charles was stealing money from your company.””
A pause.
“I confronted him.””
The video shook slightly.
“I thought he would apologize.””
Emma smiled sadly.
“I was wrong.””
Then her expression changed.
“Charles told me something that scared me.””
Ethan leaned closer.
“He said nobody would believe me.””
The words hurt.
Because Ethan knew exactly what Charles had tried to do.
“She told me I was emotional because of my illness.””
Emma looked away.
“He said if I accused him, people would think I was confused.””
Ethan’s fists tightened.
Then Emma said the sentence that broke him.
“But the worst part wasn’t Charles.””
The video paused.
Ethan frowned.
“What?””
Emma continued.
“The worst part was finding out someone close to me was helping him.””
The room went silent.
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Ethan stared.
“Someone else.””
Emma looked directly into the camera.
“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””
Then the video ended.
Only five minutes.
Only five minutes of Emma’s final truth.
But it changed everything.
Because now Ethan knew one thing.
Charles was not alone.
A message appeared on the screen.
A hidden file.
Rebecca looked confused.
“I didn’t know that was there.””
Ethan clicked it.
A document opened.
A list of names.
Payments.
Dates.
Transfers.
And one name repeated again and again.
Not Charles.
Not Diana.
Someone else.
Someone Ethan had trusted completely.
His breath stopped.

Because at the top of the list was written:
